Germantown Telegraph's Seasonable Hints.
This month is the best time te inspect
the grafts put in this spring, carrying a
cup of warm grafting wax with you, and
fill up any defective waxing that may new
present itself. The very high winds pro pre
vailing the whole of April and thus far in
May have a tendency te harden and crack
the wax, and thus expose the scion and
the inside of the split te the air and moist
ure and prevent it from becoming attached
te the weed en which the scion is desired
te grew.
Fellow this the latter part of June by
going again ever your grafts, and where
the growth is tee rampant clip off say one
half of it. This will protect it against
being broken off by the wind, aided by the
heavy foliage, and will induce branching,
thus causing it te spread and become a
mere compact and symmetrical growth.
Frequently, tee, small birds may be in
duced te light upon the graft when it
shows an inviting l-esting-placc, and break
it off.
Tlie Coming Pear and Apple Creps.
We have net heard from ethers, but se
far as our own pear trees are concerned,
we expect but a very much diminished
crop this season. "Wc scarcely ever remem
ber the trees te blossom se sparsely. Even
an old Catharine tree, which docs net fail
once in ten te twelve years te yield a cart
load, this year will scarcely ha-c mere
than a bushel. Se with the old "Windser
and Catillac, four of them altogether and
all about one hundred and fifty years old,
which make a smaller show of blooms than
for a number of years. What there were
set well and will no doubt produce a yield
of larger fruit than when the trees arc
everladen. '
The apple, en the contrary, if we can
put faith in the blossoming of the trees,
ought te give us an abundant crop in East
ern Pennsylvania. Every tree, it seems,
however old and neglected it may be, has
been covered with blooms, in fact te such
an unusual extent as te cause it te be com
mented en by persons who knew nothing
about fruit-raising. Of late years, tee, it
is generally noticed that both apples and
pears are mere perfect than formerly, be
ing less injured by insects ; and wc have
net a doubt but that this is owing te the
incessant labors of the imported house
sparrow. These who become especially
observant of their industry for a single
season must be convinced of the fact.
The Value or Small Things.
Wc have often spoken of the convenience
and value of a small tool house, which
should be found 'upon the premises el
every farmer, in which en rainy days, or
whenever there may be a day, or part of a
day, when there is nothing particular en
hand te go at, implements and machinery
out of rcpairmay be mended and made
ready for use. Or, in the event of any
thing happening when in operation, and at
times tee when the work is hurrying, which
would cause delay, wc can always have at
hand the necessary tools te mend it imme
diately and go en with the work without
much delay, and thus accomplish what
theic is te de in the specified time. Wc
have often heard a farmer say that he fully
expected te have done a certain field or al
lotted plowing or mewing, &c., if it had
net been for that stone, stump or root
breaking some poitien of the machinery,
te repair which he had te send two m'lcs
off, when it ought le iave been done by
himself ou his own premises in half
an hour or se. That very imple
ment had shown weakness the pre
ceding autumn, but having no little tool
house or workshop of his own and the few
necessary tools, it was put off altogether ;
and new, in the midst of the season, when
ethers depended en his finishing this par
ticular pieec of work te go en with getting
in the crop, the very thing happens that
he was afraid several months before would
happcn,:md which he fully intended should
be prepared for in time for the season's
work. A shop and tools would have saved
all this and as much nienev as would have
supplied the tools. Sometimes very small
things effect valuable purposes which have
a great deal te de in carrying en systemat
