Leaf Tobacco.
Last Week' New Yerk Maaket.
U. S. Tobacco Journal.;
It almost seems as if every buyer Las
a pledge te abstain from purchasing new
tobacco of any kind. Net a single trans
action in '70 tobacco was made this week;
and judging from the views expressed by
manufacturers and jobbers, the period
when in this market new goods will be
bought is as yet far off. That in a few
mouths from new their purchase will be
compulsory, is undeniable ; but what
prices will he paid and what particular kind
of crops will be taken is a matter of con
jecture. Helders of '79 Pennsylvania labor
under the idea that without their tobacco
the manufacture of cigars en a large scale
is almost an impossibility. Last week we
pointed out the fact that manufacturers
de net place se much value upon the soil
where the tobacco is grown as upon the
yielding quality of the leaf and its price.
Packers of '79 Wisconsin, Ohie and state
claim that in yield and price they will be
able te undersell the holders of '79 -Pennsylvania.
Of course their statement must
be taken with many grains of allowance.
Generally at this time of the year packers
claim superiority of crops they have pack
ed ever these of any ether state ; but this
much may be relied en that '79 Pennsyl
vania has competitors in the crops of the
states mentioned above, and that our
warnings in the early part of the packing
season, which were sneered at and derided
by many, were based upon calculations of
such events as arc occurring new. The
'70 Connecticut, new in process of fermen
tation, as a rule shows leaf which manu
facturers of fine cigars will appreciate.
The Connecticut tobacco holds a position
in the market that may be termed isolated.
It becomes a competing crop only when it
is peer. As long as it is a useful or line
crop, its sale is net interfered, with by
ether crops, however fine they may be.
Pennsylvania of the '78 crop sells as it
has sold for many weeks past. Sellers de
net get much higher prices than were paid
three months age ; and while, three months
age, the stock of '78 Pennsylvania was
estimated te be but 5,000 or 0,000 cases,
there seems te be. notwithstanding weekly
sales averaging 500 cases, no end te the
receipts and offerings. A scarcity of
tobacco by no means exists. Ohie of the
'78 crop is offered ou all sides, and '78
Wisconsin looms up at anytime when but
asked for. Expert is still in a comatose
state. The sales of the week we specify as
fellows :
Pennsylvania Crep '77 : 3C cases, run
ning, 23 cents. Crep '78 : 550 cases ;
fillers, 11 te 11 cents ; running, fair, 18
cents, fine, 22 "cents; wrappers, 35 te 45
cents.
Connecticut Crep '78 : 190 cases ;
seconds, 13 J cents ; wrappers, 38 cents.
Crep '79 : (rumored) 200 cases, seconds,
12 cents.
Wisconsin Crep '78 : 120 cases ; run
