the City cornet band as usual talcing the
lien's share of applause.
After passing ever the route agreed upon
and escorting the Empire boys te their
quarters the parade was dismissed.
The Heek and Ladder boy's were after
wards the guestR of Al. Fulreer in his new
saloon and summer garden (formerly
Franke's) where a handsome spread was
set out for them, and they were in con
dition te de practice te snch a festal beard.
The City band were also guests of the oc
casion and there was a fine display of fire
works. Marshal McMellen' MUuap.
Just before the parade started, and as
Chief Marshal McMellen was riding en
Duke street, between Orange and Chest
nut, his horse became unmanageable and
threw him off, severely spraining his
right wrist and probably breaking or split
ting one of the bones of his hand. The
horse ran down Duke street te Vine,
where it was caught. Several persons
narrowly escaped being run ever, as the
horse ran upon the sidewalk a part of the
way. One young lady fell fainting in
front of Alderman Barr's office, and had
she net fallen she would probably have
been run ever and hurt. Notwithstand
ing Capt. McMellen's painful mishap, he
at once sent for another horse and took
charge of the parade.
COUKT QUARTER SESSIONS.
Adjourned April Term.
Friday Afternoon. Court re-afcseinbled
at 2J o'clock. The case of the common
wealth vs. Themas Chamberlain, Levi
Eckcrt and Peter E. Hess, charged with
the larceny of oysters, oranges and pea.
nuts from Stephen Lainber, at the Gap, en
the night of January 20. was resumed
The defendants denied having taken any
of the articles from prosecutor's wagon.
They allege if anything was stolen, it was
done by ethers, who are new fugitives from
justice. Mr. Eckcrt, father of one of the
defendants, testified that the prosecutor
had, en three liilerent occasions, offered
te settle this case, asking the first time
MO, the second $00, and the third time
$70. A number of witnesses testified that
Peter E. I less's character for honesty was
geed.
The argument in the case was net con
cluded when court adjourned until IS
o'clock.
Friday Evening. The whole of the even,
ing session was taken up with the argu
ment of the cases of Levi Eckcrt, Peter
Hess and Themas Chamberlain, charged
with larceny.
An Ejilsede."
During the examination of the wit
ncsses the district attorney had reflected
upon Messrs. Reynolds and Urubaker, of
counsel for defense, for their examination
of witnesses who had been subpoenaed by
the commonwealth ; but who, it was satis
factorily shown, had been represented te
them as witnesses for the defense.
In his closing speech te the jury Dis
trict Attorney Eshlemau said that in mak
ing this charge he had simply been giving
expression te a principle et proicssienai
etiquette taught him by his lamented pre
ceptor, and that he regretted giving ex
pression te it, but repeated his opinion
that the conduct he complained of was
outrageous.
Messrs. Reynolds and Brubaker at once
sprang te their feet and denounced the in
sinuation as cowardly, and Mr. Brubaker
said that if the district attorney charged
him with improper relations with the
witnesses the charge was that of a black
guard. Mr. Reynolds also resented it
with great spirit and indignation. Judge
Patterson rapped and ordered them te be
quiet and sit down. They declined te de
cither until they had repelled the assault
made upon them.
Judge Patterson apologized for the dis
trict .ittornevs efl'cnsive remarks and said
. they had no greater significance than as
his own individual opinion. But Messrs.
Brubaker and Reynolds insisted en their
right te have the court say te the jury
that the district attorney's remarks were
unfounded.
Fer a time there was considerable excite
ment ever the episode hi the bar, which
was finally suppressed by the court. After
this breeze the jury was charged and ver
dicts of guilty were rendered, the court
having said in its charge that in passing
sentence it would take into consideration
the " sadness" of the case.
Regular Proceedings Resumed.
Saturday Morning. Cem'th vs. Lancas
ter city. The city was indicted for neglect
ing te keep North Prince street in a passa
ble condition. The chairman of the street
committee stated that if the case would be
enntimicd until Auirust the street would
be repaired. The court said that they
would de all in their power te break up
the practice which constables indulge in of
returning cases of this kind te court en
complaint of a fe x persons en the street.
The complaint should be general en the
part of the citizens of the street, te war
rant the constables in returning a neglect
of duty case.
The counsel for JehnB. Dennis filed rea
sons for a new trial, and the defendant
gave additional bail in the sum of $500 $500
Jehn C. Uieif, of Mount Jey, became his
surety.
The surety of the peace cases were taken
up shortly after court met and the jurors
were discharg2d.
Cem'th vs. E. Wellington Yundt, sure
ty of the peace. Careline. Ilartraiift swore
that the defendant bad threatened te kill
her, and he was ordered te pay the costs
aud te enter iute a recognizance in the
sum of $200 te keep the piece.
Commonwealth vs. Samuel Fowler, of
this city, surety of the peace and desertion
The complainant in the case was Olivia
Fewler,defcndant's wife, who testified that
he abandoned her and made threats
against her at different times. His
treatment was se bad that a daughter of
the defendant was obliged te leave home ;
although the parties live together -at the
present time, they de net eat at the same
table. The witness stated that she brought
the suit for fear that he would desert her.
Several ether witnesses testified that they
heard defendant make threats.
The defendant upon being called te the
stand testified that he never struck his
wife, who has thrown smoothing irons at
him. She is extravagant and abusive and
will net de any work for him. Witness
always kept a domestic te de the work.
The trouble with his daughter arose
from the fact that she and her
mother went te a store and bought
a bill of $280 without his orders;
The main cause of this trouble was that
his wife and child had been set against
him by meddlers ; witness has a great deal
of land, but has no money, and has no
idea what it is worth. He is unable te
sell the land and cannot obtain any money
The defendant was ordered te give bail in
the sum of $200 in the surety of the peace
case and te pay the costs. The desertion
case was continued until August term.
Sentenced for Attempted Rape.' i J3M
Charles Wilmer, colored, who was con
victed of attempted rape at the regular
April term of quarter sessions court, was
sentenced te pay a fine of $500 and te un
dergo an imprisonment of five years.
TaTern License.
The applications for new licenses and
for stands against which there were remon remen
strances were taken up.
Martin Metzreth was an applicant for a
license te keep a hotel at Walnut and Mul.
berry streets, in this city. This was an
old stand for which there has net been a
license for several years. After hearing
the argument the court refused the license.
Jacob Ruth, of Brecknock township, old
stand. This hotel has net been licensed
since 1877, but since that time it has been
kept by a man named Brendell who was
convicted of sell liquor without license.
The court refused the license.
Gertrude Rupprecht, of Columbia was
au applicant for a license for a hotel at the
corner of Fourth and Walnut streets,
Columbia, which had a license two years
age, but it was refused by the court be
cause a variety theatre was run in connec
tion with the hotel. This license was
granted.
James S. Eekman. This was an old
stand for which a license was refused last
year en account of a remonstrance against
it. After hearing the argument the case
was continued until the third Monday in
June.

Capt Ambrose Gable, formerly of this
city, and for some years past engaged in
business in Parkesbnrg, will leave Lancas
ter en Tuesday for Atlantic City.he having
taken stock in a company that run a line
of omnibuses at that favorite resort.
Disorderly Conduct.
There was a great deal of disorderly con
duct in and about Brencman's court last
night, and the police were sent te quell the
noise ; but before they reached the spot
the trouble had ended.

Obituary.
The wife of Geerge Hunter, janitor of
the court house, died last evening at her
residence, Ne. 201 Seuth Lime street, after

tion. She had many friends especially in

The Pennsylvania Movement for Its Keller.

Senhcuy, Pa., May 15. The scene at
Milten this morning beggars description.
Nothing remains except the black and
desolate ruins of the once prosperous
town. The peepla spent last night in the
houses that were left standing, principally
the nail works and planing mill.
The entire number of buildings destroy
ed was COG, and only two places of business
escaped destruction. The vaults and books
of the banks were uninjured. The people
of the town are almost entirely destitute.
Previsions have been pouring into the
town from the surrounding country.
The body of the strange man who was
burned te death v-as identified this morn
ing. He was 85 years old and was attempt
ing te save the stable of the poorhouse.
