Caltnre of the Tomate.
Germantown Telegraph.
During the few past years efforts have
been made te improve the tomato in size,
solidity, flavor and carliness of maturity.
There has been progress in all these direc
tion, net perhaps se much actual improve
ment as many of us believe, but still geed
tomatoes have in the new kinds sustained
their reputations. Old varieties seem te
gradually give way, or else people lire of
them, and they thus disappear. We have
no tomato the same as we had thirty years
age, at least under the same name, and
yet we had them pretty large and geed
lands even at that day.
Without entering closely into the histor
ical part of this inquiry, we yet think our
tomatoes have really improved in smooth
ness and quality as a general thing, when
anyone lias taken any interest in having
a geed article ; and in tomato-culture there
certainly has been marked improvement.
Recently there have been brought into the
community several ideas worthy of note in
the.se who strive for the very best article.
In regard te training, it is asserted that
much better fruit especially for eating
raw can be had from plants fastened te
slant stakes, than when the plants are al
lowed te run at will ever the ground, or
even when they are fastened te slanting
trellises. Heavy stakes are required of
course, as the great weight of a plant in
fruit cannot be borne by light stakes.
Streng bushes are also frequently used,
and they answer very well, though some
times the vines become very dense and ob
struct ventilation and the ready ripening
of the fruit.
In regard te training the plants, much
attention has been given te thinning the
branches, especially when grown en stakes,
and in shortening back some of the
branches te within a few buds of where
the fruit is te set. These who have fol
lowed this practice judiciously report geed
results.
But the latest novelty in tomato culture
is in the matter of root-pruning in order
te produce carliness. In this matter some
surprising results have been achieved ac
cording te these who have given in their
experience. While the plants are young
they are transplanted several times, which
of course " destroys some of the roots,
and after they are put out into their final
resting-places a spade is once in a while
thrust down into the ground a feet or se
from the main stalk. In this of course
size and perhaps quality is sacrificed te a
few weeks' earliness ; but many arc willing
te pay this penalty for the sake of the
early dish. The principle here is much
the same as is often done te get early
grapes when a ring of bark is taken oft".
The supply of feed being checked the re
sult is earlier fruit, but with slightly im
paired favor.
These arc the leading suggestions that
have been made in improved tomato cul
ture during the past few years net great
improvements, it is true, but still net
without value.

Brandy as a Medicine.
The lollewing article was voluntarily sent te
Mr. H. E. Slaymaker, Agent for Reigart's Old
Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi
cian et tills county, who has extensively used
the Brandy referred te in his regular practice.
It is commended te the attention of these af
flicted with
Indigestion and Dyspepsia.
BRANDY AS A MEDICINE.
Tliis new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant
was never intended as a beverage, but te be
used as a medicine of great potency in the cure
of some of the destructive diseases which
sweep away their annual thousands of victims.
With a purely philanthropic motive we pre
sent te the favorable notice et invalids espe
cially these afflicted with that miserable lii
eae Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which is
nothing mere or less than
Brandy.
The aged, with feeble appetite and mere or
less debility, will find this simple medicine,
when used properly,
A Sovereign Remedy
or all their Ills and aches. Be it, however
strictly understood that we prescribe and use
but one article, and that is
REIGART'S OLD BRANDY,
Sold by our enterprising young friend, II. E
SLAYMAKER. This Brandy has steed the
test for years, and has never failed, as tar
as our experience extends, and we therefore
give it the preference ever all ether Brandies,
no matter with hew many jaw-breaking French
titles they are branded. One-fourth of the
money that is yearly thrown away en various
impotent dyspepsia specifics would suffice te
buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or
cases. In proof of the curative powers of
Reigart's Old Brandy,
In cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon num
bcrs of witnesses one case in particular we
cite:
A hard-working fanner had been afflicted
witli an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number of
years; his stomach would reject almost every
kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens cen4
stantly ue appetite in tact, he was obliged te
restrict his diet te crackers anil stale bread,
and as a beverage he used McGrann's Reet
Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new,
nreaehed at times, and in his discourses often
declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong
drink. When advised te try
Reigart's Old Brandy,
In his case, he looked up with astonishment,
but after hearing of its wonderful etlects in
the cases of some of his near acquaintances, lie
at last consented te fellow our advice. He
used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the
first bottle giving him an appetite, and before
the second was taken he was a sound man, with
a stomach capable of digesting any tiling which
he chose te eat. He still keeps it and uses a lit
tle occasionally ; and since lie has this medi
cine he lias been of very little pecuniary bene
fit te the doctor. A Practising 1'htsician.
