THURSDAY EVENING MAY 13, 1880.
Weman as a Census Taker.
In many parts of the country women
will be appointed as census enumerators,
withtbe probable result something like

Neatly dressed woman of uncertain age
with big book under her arm and pen in
hand rings the deer bell. Yeung lady ap
pears at the deer.
Census Enumerator "Geed morning.
Levely morning. I'm taking the census.
Yeu were born?"
Yeung lady " Ycs'm."
"Your name, please? What a pretty
dust cap you have en. Can I get the pat
tern ? It's just like the one the lady in the
next house has."
"I haven't the pattern. Don't you get
awful tired walking around taking the
census?" .
" Oh, yes, it's wearisome, but I pick up
e nf l.nl nf information? IIew nice
your dinner smells cooking. Plum pud
ding?" "In Maine. Ne, I haven't plum pud
ding te-day. I'm looking for a new re
cipe " ,
"I've get one I took down from a lady s
cook book across the way. Are you mar

"Ne. Want an invitation te the wed

fore you get it. Yeu can keep your plum
pudding recipe, thank you."
"Ish'd think 'tweuld be some time.
This hall carpet is just the pattern of Aunt
Prudy's. -She had it mere than twenty
years. IIew many are there in your
family?"
"If this hall carpet don't suit you, you
can get off from it and go about your cen
susing." " Well, you're an impudent jade, any
how. Yeu haven't told me when you were
born, or what's your name, or when you
expect te get married, and there's ten dol
lars fine for net answering census-takers'
questions, and if I was you, I wouldn't be
been at the deer in such a slouchy morning
t dress, se there."
" Oh, you hateful thing. Yeu can just
go away. I'll pay ten dollars just te get
rid of you, and smile doing it. It's none
of your business, nor the censuses's cither.
Ne, it isn't. Yeu can keep your pattern
and veur plum pudding and your saucy,
impudent questions te yourself I I "
' Geed morning. I must be getting en.
I haven't done but three families all the
forenoon," and 'an energetic bang of the
deer just missed catching a feet of licr trail

Favorite Cattle.
Gcriiiaiitewn Telegraph.
Neaily every farmer especially theso
who have plenty of money and are net
farmers te the manor born has his favorite
breed of cattle. Short-horns for a long
time carried the day, and arc yet preferred
by many of these who originally introduced
them upon their farms. Assuredly they
cannot be surpassed for beauty and sym
metry, and then they make up better, when
old, for the shambles. Then followed the
Dcvens, which have many strong points
in their favor, especially for hardiness and
as light feeders ; also, for bullocks and for
working-oxen they have no superiors. Next
the Ilelsteins gained considerable faver.but
didnet long maintain it. Then followed tl:e
Aldcrneys new mere generally known as
Jerseys which are still the pets of a great
many, particularly of these who keep only
an animator two for their private use, and
they arc likely te held their own in the
future in this vespect. They are the most
beautiful of all, and the gentlest, and are
particularly fend of petting and handling.
And new, as the latest popular favorite,
comes the Guernseys, which have apparent
ly taken a firm held upon the farmer both
of the solid and fancy type who claim for
them, alike for milk and butter, as well as
for easy keeping and pcrfectness of sym
metry, a superiority ever all ethers.
Whether experience is likely te establish
these claims, we are net prepared at this
time te say ; but it leeks very much just
new as if they have taken a pretty firm
grip en people whose judgment of cattle
is regarded as very reliable. Neverthless
each have their friends and admirers, and
will continue te have. Seme farms are
better adapted te one breed than te an
other, and that kind of course the wise man
will adept and prefer te ethers.
