Tobacco.
The New Yerk Market.
IT. S. Tobacco Journal. .
As there is de demand for anything he
sides old goods, and as there is hut little
old goods te be had, the market is com
paratively quiet. An interesting feature
of the present situation is the fact that
the large manufacturers of cigars who
visit the market with the object of buying,
very seldom ask for leaf or any particular
crop. They buy what suits best in yield
and is lowest in price. Quality and color
are apparently imparted te these tobaccos
by processes best known te the manufac
turers. The manufacture of cigars en a
large scale is te-day carried en in a manner
which requires the manufacturers te be of
an inventive turn of mind and continually
taxing their ingenuity. This constant
study for improvement in the industry has
brought about the present peculiar feature
of our leaf market. Connecticut crops
alone are an exception. These tobaccos
are mainly manipulated by the small cigar
manufacturers, who in most cases are also
cigar store-keepers. By reason of their
peculiar surroundings they are enabled te
work these tobaccos te advantage, and
because of this we held te the opinion that
though high figures were paid for the '79
Connecticut, it will find sales at, if net
large, certainly adequate profit. The job
bing trade, large manufacturers and
exporters are relied upon as takers of all
the ether '79 tobaccos, especially the Penn
sylvania crop, new in the hands of packers.
The views of these three classes are this
year in formidable antagonism te the
packers' views. They show the correct
ness of these se often and persistently ex
pressed by us in regard te the hasty action
of the packers. In looking ever the
summaries of sales during weeks in March
and April of 187G, 1877 and 1878, we find
that each week showed considerable sales
of packing of new tobaccos. With the
exception of one or two, no sales of new
tobaccos were recorded in March and
April of the present year ; and it is safe te
assert that only a peer 1880 crop will
enliven the market and put money into
the purses of the packers. The transac
tions sum up as fellows :
Pennsylvania Crep '78: 075 cases;
wrappers, 27 te 35 cents ; running 17 te 21
cents ; fillers, 11 te 11$ cents.
Connecticut Crep '78 : 130 cases :

Wisconsin Crep '78 : 150 cases, running
11 J cents.

A Princess's Kemancc.
About the recent marriage of the Prin
cess Frederica, of Hanover, there was net
a little romance. " Here," said a Londen
correspondent, " is a princess marrying a
private secretary ; a descendant of the
Hanoverian kinj's marrying an undistin
guished baron, doing it against the will of
her brother, making her mends the urn
bridges furious, and calling forth
the sneers of the imperial family
in Germany. She is encouraged by the
Queen of England, who applies te the Em
perer William for her dowry, and braves
the wrath of he family te satisfy the will
of her relative. The Princess Frederica
has loved the Baren Kammingcn for years.
She sought long age for permission te make
him her husband. Fer his sake she has
refused mere than one advantageous
match. It is said that when Prince
Leepold began te show something mere
te her than a mere friendly attach
ment she determined te appeal te him as
the favorite son of the queen. She told
him her story and asked his aid. Like a true
knight, he devoted himself te her cause.
He urged his mother until she caught
some of her son's enthusiasm ; he arranged
matters which without him would have
been difficult ; he turned her critics into
her partisans ; and se it comes about that
a sister of a crownless king is able with
even something like pomp te marry for
love."
