THE FIELD OP THE CLOTH OP SILVER. Lancastrians in the Recky Mountains. Interesting Incidents of Travel Through a New Country. Correspondence of the Intelligencer. Lake City, Cel., May 1, 18S0. Lake City, a five-year-old mining camp, is situated en a beautfful plain two and a half miles long by an average of three quarters of a mile wide, washed en one side by Ilenson creek and en the ether by Lake Ferk of the Gumnsen river. The camp is hemmed in en all sides by tall cliffs whose crowns are often hid by the clouds. They rise above the town five hundred te three thousand feet. The town itself is eight thousand four hundred feet above the level of the sea, but alti tudes ever eleven thousand feet are reach ed coming from the plains. The San Juan (san wan) mountains are in the main range of the Recky mountains. The Uncom Uncem pahgre, tallest peak in Colerado (12,345 feet), is distant only fifteen miles from here, but plainly visible. This city is the pivotal point for the richest, solidest and most permanent silver mining district in the world. Over one hundred valuable mines are new being operated within a radius of sixteen miles of this camp and half a mile below town, where Lake Ferk tumbles ever a precipice, is situated one of the finest smelting and reduction works in the country, the evens being the largest in the world. Accompanied by another Lancaste rian Mr. E. C. Baldwin, a type I arrived here last Sunday, 23th of April, after an eventful passage. We left Louisiana, Me., 12:10 a. in., en the 20th inst., via the C. & A. Tt. R., te Kansas City, then the day following via the A.,T. & Santa Fc R. R. te Pueblo, and thence via the Denver & Rie Grande Nar row Gauge te Alamosa, the terminus. Frem this point te Lake City the passage is made by coaches, 113 miles. The route here has only ordinary inter est until you reach homely, dirty Pueblo. Taking the neat, saucy-looking cars of the D. fc R. G., which I noticed were built at Yerk, Pa., and turning your back upon Pueblo, scenes new te the traveler from the states meet the eye. The first 20 miles may net be perfectly agreeable en account of the terrible wind thai blows here all the year round, and which almost "bounced" me off the platform while skipping up grade at the rate of 20 miles an hour. The railway track is often block aded by snow-drifts here. But, unmind ful of the whistling wind and Hying sand, the eye finds pleasure in watching the snow-covered tops of the beautiful Spanish peaks and ether noted cliffs of the Sangrc de Christe mountains. New the read makes a wide sweep around a mountain base, and our snow-cliff pictures arc be hind us, and and again another swing and they are en the ether side of the train. All the while our general direction is tow ard them, but we seem often two hours riding te have get no nearer. After leaving Pueblo we had the plea sure of meeting Brevet Capt. Chas. A. Vernen, of company D, U. S. army, new stationed at Fert Garland, through which we passed en Thursday night, 22d ult. Capt.V. is a Philadclphian and well-known in Lancaster as a prominent cricket player 20 years age or mera. Before reaching Ft. Garland we make the ascent of Dump mountain, and pass around Mule Shee bend, a feat of engi neering skill performed by a Pennsylvanian, a resident of Carlisle. At Veta Pass this read reaches an elevation of 9,339 feet, the highest grade attained by any railroad in the United States by 1,000 feet, and with one exception the highest in the world. At Mule Shee curve, which is a far mere dangerous looking place than Herse Shee curve of the Alleghenies, the read travels 190 of a circle. Frem Ft. Garland we had a fine moonlight view of Sierra Blanca, ever 14, 000 feet high. Frem Alamosa te Clear Creek ( 92 miles) we had a pleasant ride, part of the way in Barlew & Sanderson's coaches and part of the way in open spring wagons and bark beards. On account of the snow drifts, forty feet deep in many places, the coaches are net used. I will net attempt a description of the scenery. Suffice it te say it is net surpassed anywhere in the world. Frem Clear Creek te Powder Hern the read was se deeply covered that we were compelled te walk a distance of eight miles en the snow crust. And it is in this short stretch in the eleven hundred miles we traveled that most interest is centered. I am sure my young companion and I will net seen forget it. Before leaving Del Norte, knowing what we would have te encounter, we prepared our selves with goggles, te guard against snow blindness a terrible affliction. ' After breakfast at Clear Creek, our party, nine in number, mounted a four horse buckboard, a concern with two seats, no side-beards, and 8x3 feet in di mensions. We hurry en in this convey ance for three miles when we took te the read. Having no veils te protect us from sun-bum, snow-burn and wind-burn, Ed and I utilized our handkerchiefs by cut ting eye holes in them, but we tired of this clumsy veil in a few hours, and were heart ily sorry for it afterward, for new, after seven days rest, we leek as if we had been en a six months spree. We -walked Indian file, for the trail was seldom ever twelve inches wide. Te swerve en either side was dangerous. Baldwin and I each went into the soft drift once. I te my arm pits, he te his chin. "We had some diffi culty in getting him out. Just before MAY 10, 1880. striking Powder Hern the snow is said te ba seventy feet deep. My companion exhibited considerable pluck and wasn't the last man in. I knew the boys at Lancaster who knew Ed will be net a little amazed te hear of that quiet boy's adventurous spirit. "We held out very well until we com menced the ascent of the last peak. One mile and a-halfand 2,000 feet up was no light task for " tender feet " in such a rare atmosphere. "We rested often, I assure you. Our limbs did their duty well, but our breathing apparatus failed us often. When we reached Powder Hern we were fully 9,000 feet ever the heads of our Lan caster friends. Here we took dinuer, having made the 8 miles in four and a-half hours. After an hour's rest we took sleds for 3 miles and then a sering wagon 9 miles into Lake City, reaching there at 4:30 p. m. Sunday. The scenery from Powder Hern station te Lake City is grand and inspiring beyond description, the descent in G miles being 3,000 feet. In the summer this entire read is traversed by C-horse Concord open coaches. But I am entrenching upon your space. There is much te write about from this point. It is a rich country in short, "there's millions in it " te the man with capital. These who come new with eyes and ears open and a geed bank account discreet men can make it pay. I will write again if it pleases you te hear from the field of the cloth of geld and silver. J. F. Downey. A Second Claude Mclnette Case. Mrs. Heeper's Paris Letter. I was recently told by a young French gentleman (the son of the Prefect of La Rechelle) one of the strangest romances of real life that ever came te my knowledge. Seme ten years age a peasant boy who lived en a farm near the town of Clermont Clerment Ferrand saw and fell in love with the beau tilul daughter of a gentleman of geed for tune and position, he being at that time seventeen years of age and the young lady just sixteen. The new Claude Melnotte was se madly in love that he went straight te the house of the young girl's parents and demauded her hand in marriage. The father treated the preposterous preposition with geed naturcd scem. " Come back when you have an income of $40,000 (200, 000 francs)," was his answer, " and then we will see about it." The infatuated youth took him at his word and forthwith set te work. One of the peculiarities of the town of Clerment-Ferrand is a scarcity of . water. There is no river near it, se it relies for its water supply en springs and wells. Under these circumstances a spring is a very val uable piece of property, and commands a relatively high price. Se the young peas ant lever set off for an adjacent mountain, there te search for hidden springs. My informant said that he had honey combed the whole side of the mountain with his works, constructing at one point a tun nel ever two miles in length. All this was executed with his own hands. He works from dawn te dark, lives upon potatoes of his own planting, and never spends se much as a seu upon a mug of beer. Every Sunday he gees te mass in the town, after which he proceeds te the house of his lady love, te ask if she is married or likely te be. On lecciving a response in the nega tive he plods contentedly homeward, and starts out afresh te his toil en the morrow. This life has continued new for full ten years. Up te the present time he has dis covered three important springs, each of which he has sold for $3,000, but though new possessed of what for a man in his condition of life is wealth, he abates none of the hardships of his existence. He has one fixed idea, namely, te be come the posscsserof a fortune sufficient te enable him te claim the hand of one object of his blind passion. Yet no one who knows the parties even imagine that the young lady will consent te marry him. She is new 23 years of age, and is pretty, re fined and accomplished, while he is a coarse, unlettered peasant, without even physical comeliness, as he is short and thick-set, with a bread, stolid countenance. What will be the end of his dream, I won der? My informant told me that the story was true in every particular, as he had himself visited the works and entered the curious tunnel, and had been present ed te this new Jacob, ready te serve even mere than seven years for his Rachel. m Hew the Czar Lives. Ills Daily Round of LHe. The Czar's method of life has changed a great deal since the last attempt en his life. He only leaves his palace new when business requires it, and then usually in a close carriage accompanied by six of his own mounted escort (Circassians). He rises about 7 o'clock. While dressing he is informed as te what he had done en that day the previous year, what uniform he had worn, whom he had received, &c. He then takes tea, and receives the prefect of the city, the minister ef'the imperial court and ether dignitaries. After walking for some time up and down the spacious rooms he withdraws into his working cabinet, and then pays a visit te the sick empress, never emitting at the same time te visit his daughter, the Duchess of Edinburgh, who with her children occupies the same rooms as she possessed when a young girl. Thereupon the emperor receives the minis ters and ether high officials who are requir ed te report te him and transacts business with them. At twelve o'clock breakfast is brought in, which the emperor usually takes alone in his cabinet. The ether mem bers of the imperial family resident in the winter palace are also in the habit of taking brer-.kfast alone in their rooms. Alter breakfast the emperor usually takes a drive, but always with a definite pur pose either te attend parade or pay a visit te some member of the imperial house. Returning te the palace, he spends the time until dinner either at work or visits the empress or her children most frequently his daughter, with whose chil dren he loves te chat and play. Dinner is laid precisely at 9, but since the catas trophe of February 3 never in one particu lar room, and all the members of the im perial family seldom sit down together. An exception te this, however, are the grand (se-called) gala dinners. In these cases the emperor sits down with all the members of the imperial family aud the foreign embassaders at one table, the ser vice being of geld. Tea is served at 9. After that the emperor sometimes plays a short game, generally whist, with the persons nearest te him, and retires te rest at latest at 11.
