SATURDAY BVSNINQ MAY 8, 1880.
Spring Fancies.
Ladies are ordering for the country lialf
liigu shoes, which aie coquettish imita
tions of the peasant shoes worn by the
women of the Black Ferest, Genuauy.
Seme are made in prunella, but "these for
young ladies are of kid, aud the mero ele
gant ones, for their mammas, of black
satin. The last arc trimmed with ruching
and with a bow which has a diminutive
deg's head upon it or tiny antlers.
Anether decoration, the successor of
the " Alsatian " bow for the hair, is the
' lly " bow, which is made of black lace
or silk, and imitates the unspreading
wings of an insect precisely en a larger
scale, while the way in which they arc set
ou the head renders the "Hare" all the
mere uncompromising. A dull lustrous
silk is considered mere becoming te fair
haired wearers than a shilling fabric ; aud
when lace is used it is always real.
A quaint little head-dress is a tlireo-cet-nered
'kerchief of satin dotted with tiny
llewerettes en geld or silver iiltgrvc. This
is worn with a point extending te the fore
head, and is pinned down te the head with
geld or silver headed pins, precisely as a
lady would pin a hauderchief ever her head
in the days when kul'es did sueh things
while sweepiug or dusting. Helow one
edge of the 'kerchief the hair is arranged
in llat rings, and at the back is long braids
or loops.
Flowers are new beginning te be wetu
low at the side of the head, as terttu'i ly.
and there is a prospect that the "side
curls or ringlets worn behind the e.us half
a century age will make their appearance.
One of the queer freaks is the sudden
rage for yellow or yellow and red com
bined fortunately in small doses. A
crash" of yellow buttercups, cowslips,
dally-dewn-dillys, or red and yellow roses
combined, is a feature of spring costume.
It is the most striking adornment of black
silk or satin toilettes and the shade is care
fully regulated te the complexion of the
wearer, the most delicate blonde being
able te wear the bull" and straw yellows,
while the deeper orange and iiasturtian
tints can only be ventured upon by a most
decided brunette.
One of the stylish effects produced in
trimming by clever dressmakers is in lines
of black or yellow, te imitate a wasp's
back, and when produced in gauze is al
most tee suggestive.
Bew and arrow combs are a pretty con
ceit, in which the arrow is crossed by the
bow, which sparkles with crystals, i lie
metal is geld and silver, and en the silver
combs the ornamentation is pearls, mock or
real. One of these combs is made still mere
elaborate by a chain of crystals forming
the bowstring, which hangs as if relaxed.
Seldom is a comb se prettily fashioned and
ornamented. The arrow alone and the
bow alone have both been worn richly
jeweled as hair ornaments, but this grace
ful combination dresses the hair with ef
fect even when worn quite plain. Arrows
of geld liligree tipped with small rubies
arc worn and bows of silver enriched with
tiny topaz. Three rows of black velvet
beaded with geld crystals form a handsome
head handenu for the Hat styles new se
popular.
The sku-1 cap isa bonnet fitting close te
the head, like a skull cap. except that it
opens at the back te admit of the diagonal
puffs in which the hair is dressed. The
front of this bonnet has a fringe of jet
and this decorates the beaded black lace
covering the shape. Fer further trimming
there is tn ostrich plume, black and
yellow, which is set up high, and
curls jauntily forward, se as te form
a helmet-like curve, in the hollow of
which is a yellow rose. Here and there in
the beading is what is called a "geld crys
tal." a glass bead underlaid with geld,
which very greatly heightens the effect of
the black beads, making the crystals the
centres of the stars which they form. One
of the skull-cap shapes is closed at the
back in a deep curved piolengation, which
admits of dressing the hair extremely low.
This, however, is less becoming than
bringing the puff at the tip high above the
feather.

Rex. Dr. Harvey, PreC Green. l)r llartinc
