The Tobacco Market.
The Mew Yerk Journal Repert.
Everybody in tbe leaf pnd cigar manu
facturing trade is imbued with a super
abundance of hope. Packers are antici
pating selling their '79 stock at a fair
profit, while the dealers and manufactur
ers arc hopeful of buyiug it at a fair hiss te
the parties first named. There is a great
scarcity of old and available tobacco, es
pecially wrappers. Any let iiesMwsitig
geed wrapperv leaf can Ihj easily sold at
fair figures. New (7H) tobacco cannot Ih
worked as yet ; and as manufacturers arc
filled with the idea that there will net 1h a
scarcity of geed tobacco for at least a year
te come, consequently they are in no hurry
te invest. It is, therefore, plain that
before August or September trausao trausae trausao
tieiJs in new tobacco will be few
and far between, unless the crop about te
be planted gives some poitive indication
of failure. In that im 7l tobacco will
prove a veritable mint te its packer.
Mieuld the 'SO crop prove but a paitial suc
cess, a sluggish busiues.". in 7i' tobacco w ill
be the result. We de net wish te reiterate
our former predictions in regard te the
7l lYmisyhauia ; time will tell whcthei
our calculations, a given nuv te in these
columns, weiv net Ivttcr gwuiudiNl than
the hat, e er-sanguiue ones of the pack
ers. 15ut these packers must admit tiiuy
that if they could offer their '7i packings
(geed and fair ones, of course") a Ute le
cents, an easy disposal of such at this early
day would be the eeuscqueucc The ask
ing figures for geed and fair crops of ?t
Pennsylvania at present arc fiem IS te 2
cents, and even 23 cents. Tiue enough,
the tobacco is in Qxecllent quality and
yield, and in comparison with the '78
Pennsylvania must be called comparatively
cheap at even the figures named. The
dealer or manufacturer cares very little
for comparisons. His action is guided by
facts, lie knows that there are a score of
holders of this tobacco ; he knows that the
yield of the '70 crop is enormous ; he
knows that net every packer is a Crmsus,
and that by making his purchases by
chance his pocket will net suiter. This is
the real state of the market, and the only
view we can take for the future. The
news that the spectre of a German tobacco
monopoly has vanished for this year has
created a better feeling among sonic of the
exporters, though te ethers it was a source
of great disgust. It was widely known
that some of the purchasers of the Ohie
crops for expert bought with the expecta
tion that a German tobacco monopoly
would be inaugurated, and that the te
bacce en hand m Germany would have, te
be bought by the Germans at large fig
ures. There is a surplus ever that required
for home consumption in the Unitsd States.
Will Europe take that ? An OAaminatieu
of the emigration statistics of the past
three mouths will furnish feed for retfec retfec
tien te exporters.
The sales for the ;eek sum up as fol fel
lows :
Pennsylvania. Crep '78: 700 cases;
fillers, 11 te 12 cents ; running low, 14
cents ; geed, 18 cents ; fine, 22 cents ;
wrappers, & te 43 cents.
Connecticut Crep '78 : 210 cases ; wrap
pers, 30 te 35 cents ; seconds, 13 cents ; fill
ers, 8 te 9 cents.
Crep '77 : 80 cases, p. t.
Ohie Crep '78 : 125cases, running, 9 te
10 cents.
Wisconsin Crep '78 : G3 cases of wrai
pcrs, 13 cents.

Age in the Xcw British Cabiuet.
There arc four venerable men in the
new British cabinet besides the premier,
who is the senior of them all. Mr. Glad
stone was born in 1809 and is new in his
71st year. He entered Parliament in 1832,
and his public life covers a period of forty
eight years. Next te him in aiie and ex
perience is Jehn Bright, chancellor of the
Duchy of Lancaster, who was born in
1S11, and was a prominent leader in the re
form agitation, 1831-32, although he was
net elected te Parliament till 1842. Baren
Selbernc, the lord high chancellor, is but
a year younger that Mr. Bright. As Sir
Heundell Palmer he attained great dis
tinction as a lawyer, and is better known
by his former title than the one conferred
upon him when he was elevated te the
peerage. Next in order of age comes Earl
Granville, born in 1815, but in length of
public service he stands next te Mr. Glad
stone, having first entered Parliament in
1838. Mr. William E. Ferster, chief secre
tary for Ireland, is new G2 years of age.
He is much loved in America en account
of his sturdy adherence te the Union cause
wheu se many of the great men of Eng
