TUESDAY EVENING APRIL 27, 1880.
Anether Peach Tree Enemy.
Lancaster Farmer.
Fer the past two or three years Mr.
Jehn M. Johnsten, of Lancaster, has been
making frequent complaints about an old
but favorite peach tree, alleging that it
was gradually becoming weaker and
weaker, and that he had discovered about
the base of it quantities of issuing gum,
but never had found any insects. Frem his
report we concluded that it was infested
by the common " Peach Tree Berer"
(jEgeria exiteia), and that when he had
made his examinations the insects had
already escaped in their matured form.
Last year the tree was se much en
ervated that it scarcely had power te
leaf or blossom, and, of course, pro
duced no fruit. This spring he removed
it. and brought us a portion of the lower
end of the trunk. The whole interior of
the trunk te about the height of two feet
was in a state of decay, and this decay ex
tended down into the larger roots at least
one feet under the ground. A thin shell
of living weed here and there around the
exterior was all that was left as an avenue
for the ascending sap. This dead
weed was perfectly honey-combed with
galleries, containing numerous larvtc, net
of the Egeria, but of a species of Lanoi Lanei Lanoi
ceunia, (prebaby a clylus or a tapcrda, or
some of their cegeners). Frem the fact
- that a number of young peach trees had
also been in a feeble condition, and which
en removal were found te be similarly
infested some of them perfectly gir
dled at the base and the
roots completely barked for six
inches below the surface even te the de
struction of the weedy tissue we incline
' te the opinion that these larvae arc Saper
daus, based mainly upon the fact that we
have frequently fuend young apple trees in
the same condition, caused by Sapcrdans.
One of these young trees (about an inch
in diameter) contained a larva in the heart
of it, working upward. Mr. Johnsten
says that some years age an old building
steed very near this peach tree, and that
en its removal the lower timbers were per
forated similar te the trunk of the tree,
and were "full of worms," which no care
was taken te destroy, and he supposes that
they found their way from thence into the
tree as the only place accessible te them,
for the surreundius are chiefly brick and
mortar, being in the very centra of the
city.
These larzm are perfectly white in most
cases, a few having a tint of pink. They
arc of various sizes, the largest being
inches long, and in circumference around
the theracia segments, which are larger
than these that fellow, though net nearly
se large as they usually are in the Buprcs
tans. They are altogether footless; the
head small and of a dark brown color, and
the mandibles short and sharp.
Even if the peach escapes the cold weath
er, it has yet a fearful gauntlet te run.
The peach-apis, peach-ceccus, caa-Tem i
cus, peach-borer, peach-codling, peach-cur-culie
and several ether pests, including
this last one, all seem te be lying around
like the aspirants te the throne of France
waiting for an opportunity te possess it.
We arc in the effort te breed these
larvce, and if we succeed we shall in due
time, we hope, be able te determine the
species. In the meantime we would ad
monish our leaders te destroy all worms
that they find in or en their trees, and thus
save themselves a world of subsequent
trouble. Especially when they split up
old weed or timbers and find worms in
them, they should sec that they are killed
or fed te fowls. Fowls are very fend of them
for they arc a rich and savory morsel. Mr.
J. gave his chickens quite a feast when he
removed and split up the old peach stump.
We feel confident that this matter is net
attended te as should be and could be, if
only the peeple determine that it would
dc.
