THE ACTIVE FIRE COMPANY.
Records et the Olden Time.
Mr. H. E. Slaymaker, president of the
Union fire company, has laid upon our
table a couple of old-time documents,
which he says were found when the old
Krug mansion was demolished te make
room for the Stevens house. The first of
these documents is as fellows :
At a meeting of the Active Fiie Com Cem
pauj, en the 3d Saturday of January, A.
Dem. 1792, Samuel Boyd, Samuel Turbett,
Matthias Barten, Lewis Lanman and Cas
per Shaffner, were appointed a Committee
te wait en the several Fire Companies in
the Borough of Lancaster, te lay before
each of them a Copy of the Articles or
llules of this Company, and te inform
them that it is the Wish of the Active Fire
Company te consult with them en any
Business tending te the Geed of the Com
panies and the General Safety of the In
habitants of the Borough.
A true Copy from the Minutes.

The accompanying document is a copy
of the " Articles or Rules " above referred
te. It is fairly printed en one side of a
sheet of heavy white paper somewhat
smaller in size than a page of the Daily
Intelligencer. The rules provide that
the company shall consist of no mere than
sixty members, and shall meet en the JJd
Saturday of every month "at such conve
nient place as may be agreed upon." "The
first member en the list shallserve as clerk
for the first month, and at the expiration
thereof the next succeeding member shall
serve in that station, and se en until the
whole shall have served." After laying
down rules for the admission of new mem
bers, defining the duties of members and
certain fines and penalties for a neglect of
them, the following orders are made :

tion with our Buckets, ifcc, and there ex
ert ourselves te the best of our Abilities te
extinguish the same, observing always te
Confine ourselves te such particular Situa
tions and te the doing of such paitiuular
Things as may pievieusly have been As
signed te us and direuLcd by the company
when met.
The clerk of the Company for the time
being shall be President theftef ; his Busi
ness as President shall be te propose any
thing te the Company that any Member
may have te offer for Consideration,
and te see that proper Order and
Decorum is observed by the Company;
he shall at least once in Menth in which
he presides go in Persen te the Heuse of
each Member, te see whether his Buckets,
and a printed Copy of these Utiles aie
hanging up in geed Order, near the Doer,
or in some convenient Place in the Heuse
where such Member dwells, and examine
into the State of the Engine, Ladders .V.c
belonging te the company and make a. just
and true report theieef te the next Meet
ing under a Penalty of Five Shillings.
Attached te the rules is a list of fifty
two members of which the company was
at that time composed. The names leek
very familiar, for although net one of the
members new survive, their names have
been handed down te the second, third
and even fourth generation of their de

West-bound trains te-day have carried
an unusually large number of passengers
en route for Harrisburg, some of them
delegates te the Democratic state conven
tion which assembles there te-morrow, and
ethers destined te the same point as spec
tators only, all accounts agreeing that
the attendance of " outsiders" will
be larger than at any previous
Democratic convention in the history of
the state. The Lancaster party, upwards
of forty strong, including the eight dele
gvtcs and some of the most active Demo
cratic politicians in the city, left en the
fast line at 2:10 this afternoon, their de
parture being witnessed by a throng that
crowded the depot. The train was " full
up" en reaching this city, many of the
Philadelphia delegates and their friends
being en beard, but there was no demon
stration of any kind. The only persons of
particular note en the train of whom we
caught a glimpse were Cel. McClure and
Mr. M. P. Handy, of the Times.
On a Fence.
This morning Ollicer Titus of the 9th
ward had occasion te visit the farm of Mr.
A. Ileinan near Hcigart's Landing for the
purpose of subpoenaing witnesses. As he
approached lite house he was surrounded
by four dogs, and being unarmed he was
obliged te seek safety by mounting the
top rail of a fence ; but before getting
there one of the dogs seized held of
the tee of his beet, and another reached
for the calf of his leg, but did no ether
damage than te tear the leg of his panta
loons. The efiicer was kept " treed" until
the women folks came out and called oil"
the dogs.
At His Old Heme.
Edgar P. Leng, late of this city, but
for some time past engaged in clerking in
Lcadville, Colerado, is new at his old home
in Springville, having been summoned
thither en account of the dangerous illness
of his mother, who was suffering from a
severe attack of pneumonia but who,
happily, is new better. Mr. Leng is look
ing well, and speaks in flattering terms of
the business prosperity and enterprise of
Leadvillc. He has leave of absence until
the 1st of June.
Hey Injured by a Cew.
On Saturday afternoon a four-year-old
son of Abraham Speidle.ef Careline street,
was standing in a stable where there were
s mic cows. One of the animals ran at him
and catching the end of one of her horns
in his nostril, lacerated the flesh of the
nesj in a terrible manner and broke the
nose bone. ,Drs. Boyd and M. L. Heir at
tended the boy.
Convalescent.
Addison Miller, of Mount Jey, who was
se severely injured about a month age by
being struck by a locomotive while he
was riding an unmanageable colt across
the track of the Pennsylvania railroad, has
se far recovered as te be able te be about
again.
Nice and Clean.
Centre square never looked se well as it
leeks this afternoon. Street Commissioner
Trewitz has given it a thorough washing,
removing all the filth and making the
Belgian blocks leek as bi ight and clean as
they looked when first quarried.
Amusements.
The Opera Te-night. Choice seats ler the

surance of a large and brilliant au
dience te-night. The romantic opera
of "Raul and Virginia," the title
roles of which will he rendered by Miss
Abbett and the distinguished tenor.'Tem Earl,
has never been produced in Lancaster, and in
deed Miss Abbett is the only American prima
denna who has ever undertaken the opera.
The ensemble numbers upwards of fifty
trained voices.
The Troubadours. On Thursday next the
famous Troubadours will appear here. This
company consists of five persons, viz: Nat
Salisbury, Jehn Webster, Jehn Geurley, and
Misses Nellie McIIenry and Helen Din;;eon.
They have played in every city of any import
ance in this country, and their names are fa
miliar te all amucment-leving people. They
are great favorites in the large cities where
they play long engagements. They were hcie
four years age and greatly pleased all.
"Jiip Van Winkle." On Saturday next.
Jeseph Jeffersen, the renowned actor, will ap
pear in " Hip Van Winkle" in this city. He is
tee well-known te need an extensive notice
and he will doubtless have a large audience.

A Bey Confessing; M order and Implicating
His Mether In the Crime.
"Waterbcry, Vt., April 27 Almun
Meeker, twenty years old, confessed te the
murder of bis niece, Miss Meeker, who
has been missing since last Friday.
Meeker says they wished te rid
themselves of the girl and he had his
mother give her strychnine, after which
they buried her in a swamp, after tying a
handkerchief ever her mouth. Meeker
accompanied the officers and found the
body, and te-day physicians are making an
examination.
UARRISBURG.
Speculating en the Probable Action of Te
morrow's Convention.
Harbisbure, April 27. The leaders of
both factions of the Philadelphia Democ
racy are very reticent this morning, but it
is known that seme of McGowan's party
favor admitting twenty-three delegates of
each delegation, thus dividing the vote.
The Vaux peeple give no hint of their
plans. It appears as though the delega
tion te Cincinnati will go uninstructcd.

Dublin announces that a meeting of
Heme Rulers is new in session and that

the rupture with Mr. Parnell seems te be
complete.

ville opera house was burned down this
morning. The less is 15,000; insurance

Sentenced te Thirty Years' Imprisonment
for Rape.
Washington, April 27. The negre
Themas Smothers, convicted en the 20th
inst. of rape upon Miss Lena Lcins en the
27th of last February, was sentenced this
morning te thirty years' imprisonment at
hard labor in the Albany penitentiary.
RUSSIA'S GRAIN EXPORTS.
Material Decrease In Quantity.
St. Petersburg, April 27. The experts
of grain from Russsia during the months
of January and February, were 1,099,000
quarters below these of the corresponding
period last year, being a decrease of 37 per
cent.

A correspondent of the Londen Times
says : In the village of Gandamak there
lives a Mehammdan mellah, or clergyman,
named Said Mir, te whose house there
came from the neighboring village of
Petta, one Kadir, a potter. The reverend
gentleman supplied his guest with dried
mulberries, the only feed at that hour
available in the house, after which the pair
sat down en the terrace below the pome peme pome
granatcgreve which overhangs the stream,
te smoke and talk. Said the potter te the
mellah, "I have in my heuse a daugh
ter, who is beautiful and of a mar
riageable age; if I could suitably dis
pose of her I should have room in my es
tablishment for another wife." " Brether
potter," replied the mellah, " I can well
feel for you. I have myself a daughter,
whose face is like the moon, whose lips are
like the seed of the pomegranate, whose
hair is like tangled snakes ; but what
availcth all this beauty? "Wires are cer
tainly mere useful than daughters." And
se the two old leprebatcs talked the mat
ter ever, till at last it was agreed that they
should change daughters ; and in due time
the mellah married the potter's daughter,
and the potter married the mellah s daugh
ter. New, the potter's daughter had net
been brought up with a proper sense of
propriety, and seen after her wedding be
gan te make eyes at the young men of
Gandamak in a manner most unbecoming
te the wife of a clergyman.
The meliah, perceiving this, cut off her
nose and ears and sent her back te her
father with an intimation that he Jiad dis
covered her in an act of infidelity, for
which he had punished her, and that he
new returned her, as he had no further
use for her. The potter, in getting his
daughter back mutilated in this horrid
way, was sorely distressed. He argued te
himself thus : " If the girl gees about the
village in this state the neighbors will
never cease te twit me about her, and I
shall be known as the father of the nose nese
less girl. Such shame is net te be thought
of." Se he killed her. Having killed his
daughter, the potter was stung with the
pangs of remorse. He thought te himself :
" The mellah is a great brute, and I will
be avenged en him." Se he called his wife
and said : "Your father cut off my daugh
ter's nose and ears and forced me te kill
her. New, I must have revenge, se I shall
cut off your nose and cars and send you
back te him." On hearing this the lady
began te cry and begged for a few days'
grace. " Very well," said the potter, " I
will cive you till te-morrow."
It was 11 o'clock at night, and the pot
ter had fallen into his first deep sleep,
when his wife rose neislcssly and crept out
of the cottage into the dark, cold
night. She had seen the tents of the
Feringeis, the Caffres, and she would go
teAhem for protection. Well she knew
that if she went te her father he would
kill her te avoid a bloody feud with her hus
band ; if she went te the native officials
they would take no interest in her fate,
and would return her te her husband with
as little compunction as they would return
a stray heifer te the butcher. There was
nothing for it but te go te the
Feringi. It was a long and diffi
cult strip of country te traverse, but
fear lent her strength and speed.
She sped miles across the Ishpan plain ;
she plunged witheut1 hesitation into the
icy ford across the Turkab ; she
climbed, with painful effort and with hard,
drawn breath, the rugged steep above Sa
raneu ; she fled, with stumbling steps, the
winding path that led te the British camp
at Pezwan ; she crawled past the sentry ;
she glided-into the nearest tent ; the morn
was beginning te dawn, and she was safe.

He took her te Ball Acton, who commands
at Pezwan, and Colonel Acton wind te
General Arbuthnot at Gandamak, and
General Arbuthnot made arrangements
for the young woman's safety. I de net
known what will be done with her, but
she has saved ner nose and ears for the
present.
ILLINOIS TRAGEDY.
.Twe Men Shet and Killed
Bloomington, III., April 27. A double
tragedy took place in Padua township,
18 miles from here, yesterday. A man
named Baily had accused Abraham Q.
Hendryx, his brother-in-law of cruelty te
his (Hendryx's) wife. Yesterday morning
Baily accompanied by Ilawk Stoncem went
te Ileudryx'sheusa, called him out,and het
words ensued. The two aggressors drew
pistols, but Hendryx procured a Celt's re
volver, and after sheeting Baily and kill
ing him, instantly put two bullets into
Stoncem, from which he died seen after
wards. Ne attempt was made te arrest
Hendryx, and he has since disappeaaed.

Allsopp, who steed for Droitwich, and his
son, Samuel Charles Allsopp, who steed
for re-election in East Staffordshire, have

the Dublin brewer, who is also a conserva
tive : while the octogenarian Michael
Themas Bass, of Burtoii-en-Treut, is re
elected for Derby in company with his son

Allsopp, for Fast Staffordshire), and his
.son, Hamar Alfied Bass, who was a col
league of Sir Rebert Peel, all of the Bass
