SATUBDAY EVENING APBIL 24, 1880.
The Colonel's Coffee Mill.
Detroit Free Press.
Yesterday old Jee Hemlock, one of the
darkest colored men in Detroit, -waspreme-nadim;
through the editorial rooms of the
Free Press, in search of money enough te
buy a new pair of beets, and the
sight of him revived an old recol
lection. In 18C1, after the retreat
from Bull Run, the third Michigan
infantry veent into camp at Hunter's
Place, and old Jee, then a middle-aged
darkey, came into camp as a runaway.
Cel. McConnell seized upon him for a
cook, and after instructions Jee vras given
charge of the colonel's kitchen. His first
meal was dinner and about time for it te
appear he walked in en the colonel, made
a very low bow ana sam :
" Kernel, Izc net quite up te the situa
tion jist yit. Yeu tele me te bake beans,
didn't you ?"
"I did."
"Werry well, sail ; dc beans am baked.
Yeu tele me te fry ham, didn't you?"
"I did."
"Werry well, sah ; de ham am fried.
New, did you say 1 war' te bile dc coffee
in de kernel or, nor "
"Ne no who ever heard of making
coffee that way?"
"Well dat's what I fought, but, kernel,
it am an awful slew job for one nigger te
crack all dat coflce 'tween his teefs and
dinner's gwinc te be half an hour 1 ate
suah's yer be'n!"
The Cuslcr Stalue.
Of MacDonald's statue of Gen. Custer
the general's widow says : "The face is a
man of GO years, and the dress se unmilitary
that his brother eflicers shudder in looking
at it. He is represented with full dress
coat and top beets, that only belong te un
dress uniform. The whole costume is iii
congruous and incorrect. Then, he is
armed, like desperado, in both hands,
while some of the general's best charges
were made with no fire-arms about him.
I realize that lam the last one en earth
te be sarisficd with any represen
tation of my husband. Nothing
cenld portray te me in any
form, my idea of him. But his friends in
civic life, his comrades in the army, and
artists, all have but one story te tell that
the statue is a failure as a likeness, as the
representation of a soldier, and as a work of
art. Yeu knew what intense individuality
General Custer had. His quick movements,
his active step, his riding, the very way he
were his clothes, were se totally unlike any
one else, he could net fail te be well re
presented if a man of genius once tried te
represent him. It seems as if I could net
endure the thought of this wretched statue
being repeated, and I hope that your voice
may influence theso upon whom the deci
sion rests."
Given U by Docteis.
" Is It possible Hint Mr. Godfrey is up ami at
work, mill cured by m simple a icniedj- ?"
'I assure you it is true that he is entirely
cured, and with nothing hut Hep Kitten. : and
only ten day.s age his doctors gave him up and
said lie must die !"
"Well-a-day ! That Is remarkable ! I will te
