Shall we ever leek back, when the yea rs have flown, On the time that Is passing new, With regretful elgh, or heart-born mean, O'er wasted hours, or lest days gene Shall we ever J, or thou? Shall we ever leek back when 'tis all tee late, And yearn te live ever again ; Or blot from the changeless pages of fate The errors we've made thre' love or hate, And the tears we have caused te rain ? Shall we ever leek back when the years have flown, loekback from life's sinking prow, And remember hew few were the geed seeds sewn. Hew many the tares by our own hands thrown, Over fertile fields ah ! had we but known All our wistful eyes see new. May Merrow. COURT AND PRESS. CLOTHING. RIGHTS OF LAWYERS AND EDITORS. THE NEWSPAPERS SPEAKING OUT. An Irretrievable Mistake Williamsport Sun, Bern. Judge Patterson has made a great mis mis takeone that will fellow him through life aud destroy his usefulness as a presid ing judge. A Startling Preposition. Norristown Register, Dem. That lawyers as citizens cannot criticise the actions of the judiciary is something which a people living under a republican form of government will be slew in learn ing te admire. Net American. Lcwisburg Journal, Dem. It was a tyrannical assumption of au thority that might be permitted in some despotic government, but entirely contrary te the institut'ens of America. Alight Make Werk for the Legislature. Bradford Era, Rep. Should Judge Patterson be sustained in his arbitrary ruling, the Legislature of Pennsylvania must amend the laws of the state in this direction, te protect liberty of expression. Best Abused Man in the State. Wilkcsbarre Union Leader, Dem. Since Judge Patterson disbarred the edi tors of the Intelligencer he has become, and justly, the very best abused man in Pennsylvania. Common Law is Common Sense. Harrisburg Independent, Ind. We are inclined te believe, upon the ground that law is both common sense and justice, that Judge Patterson's law is as defective as it is original. The Popular Verdict. Sunbury Daily, Ind. The popular verdict already is that Pat terson should be impeached and ousted from the bench he has disregarded ; and popular verdicts arc for the most part as just as these of a sworn jury. One Profession Enough. riiiladclphiaSunday Mirror, Third Term. In Lancaster, Pa., they will net allow editors te be lawyers. Editors have no business being anything else but editors. The editor who cannot find work enough in his paper te mere than fill all his time has mistaken his calling. Even the Lan caster papers could be improved with greater care given te their preparation. Importance et the Issue. Cailislc Valley Sentinel, Dem. The entire press of the state are in sym pathy with Messrs. Steinman and Hensel. and will sustain them in the plucky and determined stand they have taken for the right. After all, the real question at issue is net one of contempt as attorneys, but the matter at issue is the right of a public journal te critcisc a judicial proceeding. Referred Te a Higher Court. Centre County Democrat, Dem. The action of the judge, we are glad te say, meets with the condemnation it de serves, and as Messrs. Steinman and Hen sol will no doubt take an appeal te a higher court,.it is te be hoped they will in the end receive a complete vindication of their rights, and the unjust judge a rebuke that will be a lessen te him while he remains en the bench. The Question at Issue. Cleal field Republican, Dem. The real question new before the people is, shall this thin-skinned judge suppress the press, or shall the press suppress him ? We are satisfied at this distance from the scene that he is an unfit man for the bench, and the sooner he is hustled out of his place the better. Patterson, resign. The Quicker the Better. Northumberland Democrat, Dem. The quicker the people of Lancaster county get rid of Judge Patterson the bet ter it will be for themselves. By his ac tion in dismissing Messrs. Steinman and Hensel, the editors of the Intelligen cer, holding them responsible as lawyers for what they published as editors, he has shown himself te be unfitted for the bench. A Judge's Limitless Power. Williamsport Banner, Dem. According te Judge Patterson's con struction of the statue prescribing the laws governing members of the legal pro fession, few writers of the press could give an honest criticism without subjecting themselves te the petty tyranny of a judge whose own indiscreet acts overshadow his judgment, and thereby inliict injury in the name of law. When It Becomes Dangerous. Chambersburg Valley Spirit, Dem. Whenever the court imagines itself tee exalted te be touched by public criticism it becomes dangerous. And it is equally dangerous when it exceeds its prerogative and strikes outside its wide limit. The Lancaster judges, seeking te suppress fair criticism of their decisions, have ever reached themselves and the dangerous precedent they are anxious te establish will be wholly swept away, as it should be, as seen as the official attention of the su preme court is directed thereto. Shocked. Indiana Democrat, Dem. A distinguished member of the bar in Pittsburgh, in conversation a few days age, expressed himself as shocked at the assumption of power claimed by Judge Patterson, and denounced the attempt te muzzle the press by preventing members of the bar (who were at the same time editors or writers for newspapers) from ex pressing their honest sentiments, as worthy of the days of Jeffreys and the bloody "assizes." We hope the press generally will speak out and denounce this attempt en the part of a petty judge te prevent freedom of thought and opinion, and the liberty of speech. Let It Te a Jury. Easten Argus, Dem. If it is a crime te comment unfavorably upon the judicial conduct of a judge, the accused should at least have a fair trial ; but a trial in which the offender acts as prosecutor, judge and jury, is about as un fair as can be imagined. Suppose that Messrs. Steinman & Hensel had under taken te prove that the charges of mis conduct made against Judge Patterson were true and proper for public informa tion? is it at all likely that any amount of evidence would haveinduced the judge te find a verdict against himself. Would net the very attempt of the accused te vin- A COMPLETE RENEWAL IN OUR STOCK OF CLOTHING. Milferd Dispatch, Dem. A lawyer may net speak disrespectfully of the court before which he practices, in its presence, nor may any ether citizen. But beyond the presence of that court a lawyer may say what he pleases, and the judge is no mere protected from the criti cism, oral or written, than he would be if he were net a judge, but a private citizen. If these lawyer-editors did publish a libel about Judge Patterson, he should have proceeded against them for libel. lie had no right te cite them before his court te answer in their personal capacity for a grievance personal te himself enlv. When a man becemes a lawyer he does net relin quish his manhood nor independence te every petty judge who may cheese te take umbrage at any criticism he may make out of court andjin the enjoyment of his rights as a citizen. Berks County Judgment. Spirit of Berks, Dem. If the editors of public journals have reason te believe that any judge upon the bench is swayed from the strict line of impartiality in his public duties by polit ical considerations, surely they have the right te say se, under the guarantee of the " Declaration of Rights " which forms the first article of the constitution, that "every citizen may freely speak, write or print en any subject," with this restric tion only "being responsible for the abuse of that liberty." The guarantee is as bread as words can make it; it extends te "every citizen," whether he be editor, lawyer or layman. But, according te Judge Patterson's dictum, when a citizen becomes a lawyer, and takes the oath as such, he surrenders this right become less than a citizen, and sinks practically te the place of an abject subject te the court in which he practices. His mouth is forever closed, and whatever fantastic tricks may be played upon the bench, under the guise of justice and unfortu nately we have had of late only tee many instances of this sort of prostitution of the judicial ermine he must stand mute, under the penalty of expulsion from his office.
