THE CASTLES OF THUBINGIA.
The SchleM la Which Lived the Schenken
Ven Tantenberg Historic Associations
Surrounding the Ancient Structure
Mediaeval and Modern Feudalism.
Tauteaberg's Ancient Schloss.
Special Correspondence of the Intelligencer.
Strange names are heard in Thuringia,
and equally strange are the incidents
and characters which stand historically
related te them. Very quaint and weird
are their mediaeval founders very barbar
ous their predecessors.
One hour distant from the swiftly
flowing Laale and the very historic Dern.
burg, is the little Derf Tautenburg. Sur
rounding the Derf is one of of the finest
of the Thuringian forests, whilst hovering
ever it is the Tower of the Schloss Tau
tenberg. Situated se beautifully and pic
turesquely, the Schloss Tautenberg can
claim a high rank among the castles of
Thuringia. But who is the Schenken Ven
Tautenberg ? Descended from a long line
of knights, he belonged te a line from the
T?i.l fil,Tilran T7i V.nrtiile A rA Twr
who is the latter ? Rudelph Ven Vargula
accompanied Ludwig den Hciligen te
Palestine, as a Crusader. When the Land
grave died en the way, Rudelph returned
with his body te Thuringia. After his re
turn te Thuringia he built in the year
1232 his stammhaus Tautenburg, hence the
name "Schenken Ven Tautenberg," be
came the hereditary title of this sub-division
of the Vargula family. The word
Schenken refers te the form of investiture,
which was te raise the flask, and pouring
the wine into a glass, te hand the Schenk
en te the newly made amt man. The
word thus came secondarily te mean the
man and net the office, reversing the order.
The portion of the Thuringian forest in
which Tautenberg is situated was granted
te the Rudelph Ven Vargula by Ludovicus
the Third, Landgrave of Thuringia. The
Vargula dynasty, as it was called in early
days, was thus ever attached te the Thur
ingian Landgraves, one of its members hav
ing been asked te bringPrincess Elizabeth
(afterwards the Hely Elizabeth) of Hun
gary te Thuringia, when she became the
wife of Ludovicus den Heiligen. In the
succeeding centuries the Schenken Ven
Tautenberg was a title well and widely
known throughout Thuringia, and ever re
mained devoted te its interest. In 1482
the castle was restored and remained in
excellent preservation until the last cen
tury, when the surviving branch of the
dynasty decided te remove it "in tete,"
stone by stone, te Frauenpriesnitz, one of
the villages which pertained te their feudal
right of investiture. The villagers of Tau
tenberg must de as their liege lords wished,
se stone by stone was the venerable castle
dismantled, and in the wagons of the re
tainers taken te Frauenpriesnitz, where
the new Schloss was erected. The only
relic of the old castle permitted te remain
was the tower which still speaks of the
old glory of Tautenberg's Schenken. Net
long since this most peculiar freak the
family died out, net being able te survive
such a strange misdemeanor and discour
tesy te their illustriens head, ' the Erb
Schenken of Vargula and Schenkon Ven
Tautenberg. This is the schless by whose
tower I sit and think of the Rudelph,
who, with a feudal retinue, oft entered
the arch through which I new leek upon
the village at the base of the hill. The
berg en which the schless is rebuilt is a
thorough cone in shape. Very secure was
the secluded position of this mediaeval cas
tle. The remains of the old meat can still
be seen, new forming terraces. The round
archs of the two remaining doers of the
tower and several windows bespeak the
early period in which it was built. Crawl
ing through one of these openings, one
enters the tower, through which is seen
the light of heaven above the space being
unbroken by floors or sub-divisions. The
walls are thick and massive, and though
triangular in shape without, are square in
form, within. Through the round arch of
what was no doubt the former main en
trance te the castle, one has a very pictur
esque view of the opposite part of Tauten
burg. Names of persons of different por
tions of Europe are inscribed en its walls,
and one must net forget that he is an
American. The limestenes are full of per
forations, which the rains of many centu
ries have eaten se full of marine remains
in these calcareous deposits in Thuringia.
By the old tower is a linden around
whose trunk is a circular bench. As one
again en hands and knees creeps out of the
castle archway, he disturbs a group of vil
lage knaben, who have been enjoying a
loll en this early spring day. Bowing te
him and saying " Geed Tag," they quickly
descend the hill, thinking that he wishes
te be alone. Under the linden one sits
and enjoys the beautiful evening which
the Tautenberg affords. Te the right
stretches a weeded height, whilst before
one stretches the vale through which the
Schenken Ven Tautenberg would return
en their way homeward from the Tour Teur
nier at Halle and ether Thuringian strong
holds. The beautiful thale and the round
berg en which the castle is situated, breaks
upon his view as he comes from the Dorn Dern
burg and the Laale. Mere and mere dis
tinct does each object become, until he
reaches the portal itself, upon the Damen,
and children with garlands and cheerful
voices welcome their liege lord, the
Schenken Ven Tautenberg. Clustered
together at the feet of the hill are the
houses of the village. A new house is
actually being erected but this, following
the custom of the village, is being twisted
se as te accommodate itself te the let en
which it is situated. The village church is
a combination of domestic and ecclesiasti
cal architecture, having the first story of a
church, the second of a house, with an in
describable reef. Its walls are interesting
as showing the round arches of the Ro
manesque style of architecture, but have
in the five centuries since they were erect
ed had many malformations imposed upon
them. The interior of the church is hid
eeus and dirtv devend description. Near
the chief entrance is a deer leading into an
arched vault, a wooden chest strongly
clamped with iron bars, and an old Reman;
esque rindes with a statue of the Virgin
which still clings te this pre-Reformation
relic. Near by are the figures of four
saints which have fallen from the rindes.
One feels a compassion and therefore
places them together en the wooden frame
work, se decayiug did everything seem
and yet venerable with age as these
all date from the time of their former Ro Re
man Catholic worshipers. At the further
end of the church is the altar, which was
formerly a Reman Catholic reliquary. The
churches in this section were nearly all
built in Pre-Reformation times, and still
retain many of their former features. Te
the right and left of the altar are two pests
which are capped with imitation of palm
trees. Over the round areh is a portrait
of Luther, which one would net recognize
if his name were net painted below. One
cannot approve this custom of having the
portraits of the reformers in the churches
These only displace the pictures and figures
of the saints which the piety of their former
Reman Catholic worshipers placed there.
It is indeed a peer rule which will net
work both ways. Often one sees such
strange, strange contradictions in these
churches and chapels, representing both
sides of the Reformation. Very commend
able, therefore, does it seem that the
Tautenbergers have decided te build a new
church a great mass of stones near the
belfry plainly says that the decision will
seen become a reality. The old belfry is
very interesting, as it contains a bell which
for 3GS years has called the Tautenburgers
te attend Divine service ; one of the
Schenkcns Ven .Tautenberg having pre
sented it te the village church. The old
canter of the congregation was very kind
and had a true evangelic face. Fer mere
than fifty years he has filled the position
of village school teacher and church can can
eor. The young pastor represents the new
life which is springing up in this region,
which cannot be repressed feudally nor
ecclesiastically. Everything is such a study
in Thuringia, church life as well as secular
history. One can almost call Thuringia the
Poland of Germany, se dismembsred is i
and se long has a modern feudalism sue
cteded a mediaeval. In this immediate
vicinity the University of Jena has made
such sad havoc ecclesiastically that one is
saddened whenever the word Jena is
spoken.
Thus a short sketch of the Tautcn
berge, in its relation te mediaeval and
modern life has been penned, and one
trusts that the hour spent under the shadow
of its tower and in the interior of its
church has been profitable. Erb Schen
kens and Schenkcns have passed away,
and the schless has been carried away te
Fraucnpriestniz, but the old berg stands
the same as when the Landgrave Leuis of
Thuringia presented it te the 'Schenken
Ven Tautenberg.
