THE NEWSPAPERS SPEAKING OUT.
FOB SALE IJT
What Ruin be Hath "Wrought.
Washington Review and Examiner, Dem.
"We de net pretend te knew anything
about the law applicable te this case, but
surely if the law, as it new stands, author
izes the judge te act as complainant, court,
iury, and executioner, it ought te be
changed at the next session of the Legisla
ture. The one-man power -which Judge
Patterson has exercised is monstrous in
thn evtrcmc. And instead of sustaining
the dignity of his high office and vindicat
ing the character of his court, the judge
has covered himself with contempt and de
stroyed public confidence in the tribunal
ever which he presides.
Revenge se Sweet.
Hollidaysburg Standard, Dem.
The disbarred gentlemen thereupon ap
peal te a higher court, and revenge them
selves upon Judge Patterson by publish
ing his remarkable "opinion.'
Getting Tired of It?
Lancaster Correspondence Columbia Courant.
Although Judge Patterson may have
showed his cars when he disbarred Messrs.
llcnscl and Stciuman, yet the publication
of column after column of qxtracts con
cerning it from newspapers all ever the
country must sorely try the patience of
the Intrlligenckr's readers,
The Act of h Violent Partisan.
NowvilleStaref the Valley.
As the act is known te be a violent
partisan one- it is questionable whether the
justice, dignity and calm deliberation of
the bench is maintained. The act is re
garded as petulant, fiercely intolerant and
ret by any means in accordance with the
spiiit and privileges of our system of
government. The gentlemen in question
were answerable te him only as attorneys
and net as editors and unless the judge in
some way recedes from his arbitrary act
he will be justly charged with having
denned the ermine of Jeffreys, and would I
de mere if he dare.
nights of the Press and the Public.
Bradford Reporter, Rep,
The right of the press te criticise the
official conduct of officers or men in pub
lic capacity is guaranteed by the Declara
tion of ltights, where such publication is
net maliciously or negligently made, and
this guarantee covers everything that any
conscientious or careful editor could de
sire. There is little or no danger of
falling into contempt of court or being
mulcted in damages where there is a dis
position te deal fairly and honorably.
In geed truth, there is, in these times, tee
much license allowed the press. It is a
lamentable fact, that the indecent press
of the country has multiplied and nour
ished, te the great demoralization of the
public taste and morals. Newspapers of
large circulation are given up te pander
ing te the most depraved tastes, and even
lhe?e which claim te be respectable are
the channels of slander and carry into
familiar matters which arc unfit for pub
lication. There is unbounded license
for the scattering- of rumors and sur
mises affecting the moral and political
standing of public men. A poitien of the
press seems te be given up te the dis
reputable task of tearing te pieces the
prominent men of the nation. N i story is
loe improbable, no gossip tee vile, for their
columns, and regardless of its indecency
or injustice, it is elaborated te pander te a
depraved public taste, or te gratify vindic
tive personal animosity. Neither private
reputation nor official character is safe
from these malignaui attack, which arc
made under the false assumption that the
liberty of the press sanctions the most ui
bridled lvccnsc. It is time a higher avl
mere reutable standard was set up, and
the public and the court united te put
down the dangerous license which has no
respect for private reputation or official in
tegrity. !.'. . -;. . .tm . . .
