HERR KRUPP'SGREAT GUN FACTORY
An Knoriiieus Establishment in Khenish
Prussia The Business of the Vulcan
of Essen Its Extent and Bew
It is Managed.
Jlerr Krupp ought te consider himself
one of the most important men et the age,
for kings .fall down before him and em
perors de him service. "When Bismarck
swore vengeance en, the French, it was te
HciT Krnpp that the Kaiser Wilhelm had
te go for help ; when the autocrat of all
the Russias determined te teach the great
Unspeakable te leave off from evil and te
learn te de well, it was Herr Krupp te
whom he had recourse; when Austria
bullies Italy, Francis Jeseph makes a
demonstration of doing the same ; nor
does Great Britain consider the Vulcan of
Essen beneath her august notice.
Frederic Krupp is, indeed, a mighty
personage ; he has a mighty vocation, as
well as a mighty let te contend with. We
ought te have said Alfred Kiupp, for his
father Frederic, the founder of the fac
tories in 1827, has for many ycais been
dead, and the establishment ewes its fame
te his son. It was net until the year 184G,
when Heir Krupp had discovered the se
cret of smelting steel from huge masses,
often as much as 100,000 peuuds in weight,
that he devoted himself te the manufacture
of cannons for which his reputation is new
world-wide. At first he stuck te guns of
small calibre, but, by gradually increasing
their size, he succeeded in at length in pro
ducing these colossal monsters by which he
gained his celebrity, and for wheh he has
received orders, net only from all the
European powers, but from the govern
ment of this country, as well as from that
of Japan. Krupp's manufactory produced
these terrible engines of destruction used
by the German hosts in the war against
France in 1870 and 1871, notably the enor
mous cannons employed in the bombard
ment of Paris in the month of January of
the latter year. As a reward for his ser
vices, the German emperor has often ex
pressed his desire of conferring great so
cial distinctions upon Mr. Krupp; but
these offers have all been respectfully
declined. At all the leading exhibitions
of the last few years, the Krupp factory
at Essen has been largely represented.
At the Paris exhibition of 18G7, the
huge cannon made by the firm for the de
fence of the pert of Kiel was en view.
It weighed about thirty-three thousand
pounds, cost $100,000, and could net be
fired for a less sum than $800. Again, at
Vienna, in 1873, Krupp had one of his
" Essen infants" en view, which measured
7 yards in length, 12 yards in diameter,
and weighed nearly eighty thousand
pounds. Beth at the Centennial exposition
in Philadelphia and at Paris, nearly two
years since, the Essen factory was repre
sented by equally large, if net larger, en
giucs of destruction. Most artillerymen
consider the Krupp cannon the best in the
world. They are extensively used, nearly
thirty thousand having been already pro
duced. Since 1872, the entire German
army has been provided with the new
Krupp field-gun. The system of Krupp's
cannon is the breech-leading ; their pecu
liarity consists partly in the metal and
partly in their construction. Besides the
guns, Krupp turns out from his manufac
tory axles, tires, wheels, etc., for railroads,
rails and springs for railroads and mines,
axles for steamboats, cannons and gun car
riages. Taking one year with another, it
has been computed that, in the various de
partments of the monster factory, 730,(0),
000 kilegrammes of coal, 000,000,000 kilo kile
grammes of coke, 0,900,000 cubic metres
of water and 7,500,000 cubic metres of gas
are annually used. The quantity of steel
alone produced and consumed for casting
often amounts te 130,000,000 kilegrammes
yearly. Taking the kilegramme at 2
pounds and 3 ounces it is, in reality, a
trillc mere and a metre as 1.094 of a yard,
an American mind can form some idea of
the magnitude of Herr Krupp's enter
prise. The establishments cover an area of 400
hectares upwards of 900 acres and em
ploy nearly 13,000 hands, net including
5,000 in the mines and smelting works,
2,000 in the building department, and
some 730 in the administration. Including
the wives and children of the employees, it
is estimated that some 30,000 souls arc
dependent upon Ilerr Krupp, who is pro
prietor selus et unus, and who is said te
work, in one way or another, as hard as
any man in the factory.
The scene inside the wall of the buildings
almost beggars description. Virgil's de
scription of the Cyclopes forging thunder
bolts is mere than appropriate.
l"urvetepus
Ac veluti lentis Cyclopes fulmina massis
(Juuiii preperant alii t.iurinis fellihtis auras
Accipiunt reduntque alii stridenlia tinguni
Kra lacu ; gemit iiupesitis incudibus -ltusi.
Te convey materials from one depart
ment te another, as well as te and from
the mines owned by Krupp in the imme
diate neighborhood of Essen, mere than
forty miles of railroad have already been
laid down, ever which 20 locomotives and
800 cars are constantly running. There is,
moreover, a complete system of telegraph
pervading the entire works. Te give a de
tailed account of the various parts of the
works would be next te impossible, within
the limits of a newspaper article ; suffice,
hi the present case te say that the latest
hammers and 294 steam engines, of a total
of reports give 250 smelting furnaces, 390
annealing and ether furnaces, 77 steam
10,000 horse-power, constantly in opera
tion. In addition te the mines in the im
mediate neighborhood of the werke, which
produce annually some ten million kile-gi-ammcs
of pig iron, Krupp is the owner
of rich deposits of iron ere in the north of
Spain, upon which te fall back in the
event of such a possible contingency as
these of Essen becoming exhausted. These
who have passed by railroad through what
is known as the "Black Country" in
England, or have explored the mining dis
tricts near Alais, department Gard, in
France, can form some idea of the exterior
of the Essen factories. But the gloomi
ness of the outside is by no means typical
of the social condition of the people inside.
The men, many of whom have been em
ployed en the works from twenty te fifty
years, are intelligent, well cared for and
contented, the most cordial relations exist
ing between employer and employed.
Ilerr Krupp beasts and with a geed deal
of iust pride that a strike has never taken
place in his establishment. Experienced
workmen almost invariably remain in the
factories for a considerable time ; but,
with the ordinary laborers, there is, as
elsewhere, the same amount of going and
coming. "Ne women are employed in the
factories ; nor are any permitted, under
any pretext whatever, te gaiu admission
they are as rigorously excluded as by the
holy prudes from the legion of monasteries
in the neighborhood of the classical Mount
Athes.
Ne man could be mere attentive te the
requirements of his employees than is Herr
Krupp. The numerous institutions for
their benefit receive his personal supervi
sion. He has erected upward of one thou
sand dwelling houses for unmarried work
men, at which beard and lodging can be
obtained at from CO te 70 per cent, of the
of the usual charges. Fer instance, the
price of beard, without lodging, in the
neighborhood of Essen, is about 25 cents
per day; but, in the factory bearding
houses, it can be had for 17 cents. There
are also 1,950 houses fee married work
men, and comfortably furnished rooms.
with beard, for clerks and ethers employ
ed en the works. In no case have the pro
ceeds from these accommodations ever
covered working expenses the deficit
comes from Herr Krupp's purse and he is
credited with never grudging expenditure
for worthy and competent employees. Jfer
is geed nourishment alone provided.
Geed, pure water is Laid all ever the works
and houses. "Writing in 186G, Ilerr Krupp
says: "In order te provide the
workmen with bread at cheap rates,
we have opened a bakery, which
has this year furnished 1,960,000 pounds
of white bread and 2,740,000 pounds of
brown hi cad at cost price ; that is, from
12 te 15 per cent, below the ordinary price.
And, further, in order te supply the men
working at the furnaces with a healthy
and cheap drink, as well as te put a step
te brandy drinking, we have opened a
'Bier Halle where light and harmless
beer can be had at low rates. The consump
tion has varied, according te the season,
from 400 te 1,100 pints a day." If this
was the way in which these philanthropic
establishments were patronized fourteen
years age, what must be the consumption
of this cheap bread and beer at the present
day, since, according te Ilerr Krupp's own
admission, his business "increases
from a sixth part te a third
annually." Fer the wives of the
empleyes there are co-operative establish
ments, where all articles necessary for
ordinary housekeeping may be obtained at
considerably reduced rates. The store
keepers of Essen naturally regard the man
who has made ther townfamouswithsinis tewnfamouswithsinis townfameuswithsinis
ter leeks. They are never tired of cracking
stele jokes about the paradoxical philan
thropy of a man who gets his living by
inventing and manufacturing weapons for
the destruction of his fellow-man. With
regard te the benefit society for the sielj
and wounded or for the relatives of de
ceased operatives, Herr Krupp is very em
phatic. Each man and boy has no alter
native te joining the society from the day
of commencing work, either en the 1st or
15th of each month, for en these days
only can changes in the personnel be made,
excepting under very extraordinary cir
cumstances. 1 he members are grouped
into categories according te their salaries,
aim according te tueir being single or
married, and pay in proportion te their
pecuniary position. Te the amount thus
levied, Herr Krupp adds one-half of the
total. A sick man in addition te the bene
fits accruing from the sick fund, receives
a certain fortnightly salary, the amount
of which depends upon his ordinary
pay and his term of service. A compen
sation is paid te these who get seriously
injured in the service of the factory, as
well as te the relatives of these who die
or are killed when in Herr Krupp's cm
ploy. There are hospitals en the prem
ises, doctors, are always in attendance, and
these who feign sickness are heavily fined,
Xete is taken of these young men whom
the law of conscription cempcls te leave
the factories for military service. When
the obligations of these latter te their
country arc cancelled, they can, should
they se desire, return te Krupp's employ.
The members of the executive of the
various institutions in -connection with
the Krupp factories, mines, etc,, are elect
ed by popular ballet annually, each man
ever the age of 21 being entitled te vote.
Te again quote Herr Krupp : "It is preb
able that - these various institutions have
in a great measure, contributed toward
avoiding any conflict between the em
ployees and the preprietcr, notwithstand netwithstand
idg the vast number of persons employed
in the establishment."
This brief sketch of Krupp's gigantic
enterprise would scarcely be complete
without some reference, however passing,
te the means provided for the diffusion of
useful and scientific knowledge among the
workers. In addition te well conducted
schools and lecture halls, the nlatferms of
which are often occupied by the most emi
nent of German lecturers, there are chemi
cal laboratories, photographic and litho
graphic establishments, as well as a host
of ether equally important institutions, in
connection with the works. In fact se
perfect is the organization- of the whole
concern that even many large employers of
labor en this side of the Atlantic would de
no harm by taking a lessen from its books.
Krupp has reduced te pamphlet shape
some account of the working of his gigan
tic enterprise, its by-laws and regulations,
copies of which are net difficult te be
obtained. The latest French edition, un
der the title of " Acierie de M. Fried.
Krupp, a Essen," is replete with details of
a most interesting nature.
But, although willing te enter into all
ether particulars, Herr Krupp is reticent
and, perphaps, naturally tee as te the
exact, or even appreximative, amount of
the value of the work turned out from his
factories yearly. The misfortunes of
ethers, as a rule,, prove blessings te him.
Te the minds of the peace-loving commu
nity, there is something very terrible in
even his name, for it has a saver of what
the gifted author of " Childe Hareld "
would stigmatize as "bleed and thunder,
thunder, wounds and bleed." Could Herr
Krupp be led te believe that the rumored
disarmament schemes of his tried
friend, the notorious Sphinx of Varzin,
possessed some foundation, he might anti
cipate a very large reduction in his vast
business, in his vast income and in the
vast numbers of these ever whom he holds
sway ; and would, probably, turn his at
tention te methods for averting further re
petitions of such appalling disasters as
that of the Tay bridge, te the assistance of
which he is new called. But he is tee much
of a German net te feel assured that, se
long as " the man of iron and bleed " and
his imperial master te say nothing of the
autocrat nephew of the latter remain in
the flesh, he may continue te fulminate
what Milten would have characterized as
"hell's own invented torments" te his
heart's content.
Jehn Hays, Credit P.O., says: "His shoulders
were se lame for nine months that he could net
r.rNe his hand te his head; but by the use of
Dr. Themas' Eclectric Oil the pain and lame
ness disappeared, and although three months
has elapsed, he has net had an attack of it
since. Fer sale by II. B.;Cochran, druggist, 137

Statistics prove that twenty-live per cent,

terrible disease-in its worst stage will yield te
a bottle of Lecher's Renowned Congh Syrup,
shall we condemn the sufferers for their negli
gence, or pity them, for their Ignorance?
Husband "My dear that child will certanily

seen." Wife "Oh! I must tell you, I just
