RIGHTS OF LAWYERS AND EDITORS. THE NEWSPAPERS SPEAKING OUT. The Eighth Installment of their Opinions. Early and Ortcn. Pittsburgh Pest, Deni. Judge Patterson of Lancaster, refuses te permit the editors of the Intelligencer te practice before him, but if they de net practice en him early and often it will be because they don't want te. Newspaper people have long memories. Dangerous All Around. Oil City Derrick, Ind. The action of Judge Patterson is repre hensible and dangerous te the librties of the press and our free institution. By a Large Majority. Bloomsburg Columbian, Dein. The unanimous verdict of the press is that Judge Patterson, of Lancaster county, in his action in dismissing from the bar Messrs. Steinman and Ilcnsel, for certain publication made as editors of the Intel ligence has made a ridiculous muss of it. The supreme court will undoubtedly sustain the decision of the press. Geed Law for a Monarchy. Clearfleld Republican, Dein. One of the vilest attacks ever made en "the freedom of the press" in this coun try. Such edicts might pass current where Bismarck miles, but they arc awfully out of order en this continent. If the editors libeled, let them be taken into court, but de net behead them without a trial. "Wrong Shipped Every Way. Yerk Pennsylvauian, Dem. If Messrs. Steinman and Ilensel were guilty et libel as journalists, the court has gene about the wrong way of punishing them, and if they were net guilty of con tempt as members of his court, it is diffi cult te imagine what they were guilty of. Ovorbliet the Mark. Lacaster Cor. Munhcim Sentinel, Rep. In our opinion Judge Patterson has de cidedly gene beyond the authority invested in him. and that Messrs. Steinman and Ilensel did nothing mere than they had a right te, in their capacity as journalists, in their strictures which have led te this usurpation of power by the judge. Terms of Severest Censure. Marietta Time", Kep. The matter is spoken of by all the lead ing p:iK!rs, in the state, as lawyers are connected in feemc capacity with almost every one, and nearly all of them speak of the decision in terms of the severest cen sure. A Conundrum. WiightsvillcStar, lnd. This action of the judge is certainly sin gular te say the least. Why he should at tempt te deal differently with Messrs. Steinman and Ilensel, because they happen te be attorneys in his court, from the ac tion that would have been taken in the case of any ether editors who might have made unpalatable remarks about his ac tion, is hard te understand. It is net prob able that the supreme court, te which the matter will be taken, will sustain the judge in hi position of plaintiff, judge and jury. Contrary te the Spirit of American Lair. Deyle-town Denieer.it, Dem. The decision is as tyrannical as it is un just, and contrary te the spirit of Ameri can law. The elfeusc of the two attorneys was net committed by them as officers of the court, but in their capacity as citizens and editors, in a sphere beyond the reach of the judge en the bench. If this be the law of the land then the official conduct of a judge is above criticism by any one who is an attorney, lie may be the editor of a newspaper, but his paper must be silent in tiie face of the greatest judicial corruption. The case will be carried te the supreme court, where, no doubt, the tyrannical decision .of the judge will be le velled. Ne Common Sense In His. Kasteu Express. The common sense course would have been for Judge Patterson te have indicted the proprietors of the Intelligencer for libel, and establish their guilt te the satis faction of a jury, and then their disbar ment would have been reasonable. A Judicial Itulldczcr. Allcntewn Item, Dem. Judge Patterson did net recite many points of law or precedents te sustain the position he assumed, but relied mere upon tha arbitrary power of the court, which he se fearlessly wields for his own benefit. A Court in Contempt of Itself. Belair (Md. -Egis) Dem. This action of Judge Patterson, in hold ing Messrs. Steinman and Ilensel responsi ble, as attorneys, for the utterances of their newspaper, is a glaring act of judicial tyranny, which the entire press of the country should resent. The editors of the paper did their duty te the public fearless ly, and if Judge Patterson was misrepre sented by them he had the same means of redress against them as against editors who W3ic net members of the bar. When the press of the country fails te speak out against palpable wrongs in the administra tion of justice, the courts will be power less te protect the rights of citizens. l'rellt, si.soe. E. siaymaker, Agent for Rehnirt's Old Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi cian et this county, who lias extensively u-ed the Brandy referred te in his regular practice. It is commended te the attention of these af flicted with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant was never intended as a beverage, but te be u-ed as a medicine of great potency in the cure of some of the destructive diseases which sweep away their annual thousands of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the favorable notice et invalids espe cially these atllictcd witli that miserable dis ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which is nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, with feeble appetite and mere or less debility, will find this simple medicine, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy ernll their ills and aches. Be it, however strictly understood that we prescribe ami use but one article, and that is BEIGART'S OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young friend, II.' E. SLAYMAKER. This Brandy has steed the test for years, and has never failed, as tar as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preference ever all ether Brandies, no matter wit li hew manyjaw-breaking French titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would sufliee te buy all the Brandy te cure any such case or cases. In proof of the curative powers et Reigart's Old Brandy, In cases of Dyspepsia, we can summon nutn bcrs of witnesses one case in particular e cite: A hard-working farmer had been atllictcd with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number of years; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; be had sour eructatiens con stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, ami as a beverage he used McGrann's Reet Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new, preached at times, and in ids discourses eltcn declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advised te try Reigart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked up with astonishment, but after hearing of its wonderful effects in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, and before the second was taken he was a sound man.with a stomach capable of digesting anything which he chose te eat. He still keeps it and uses a lit tle occasionally; and since lie has this medi cine he has been of very little pecuniary bene fit te the doctor. A PiucTisijre Physician. H. E.
