The Clubs te be Organized.
The base ball season will shortly open in
this city and it premises te be a lively one.
At least two geed clubs will be organized,
and there will probably be mere when the
fever fa'nly takes held of the boys. The
Ironsides are first in the field, and the nine
will consist of almost the same men who
played te many geed games last year,
coming efT with an excellent record. The
club will have new uniforms and present a
fine appearance in the field. There are
plenty of geed players in town new and a
club will be organized, which will be com
posed of a number of men employed at
the Penn Iren "Works, including Kenny,
3l3'cis, Shay and ethers. When these
weiks were running several years age
they had the best club in the city, and
thcre is no reason why a geed team should
net again be formed.
Te make baseball a success in Lancaster
a geed ground is needed, as there is none
here at present. The old common at the
Penn iron wei k s has been filled up witli
dirt, stones, &c, and as it never was a
geed ground it would be impossible te play
upon it in its present rough condition. The
Ironsides ground is the best in town, but
it is small, and as it is in an out-of-the-way
place, it is with difficulty that the
many levers of the game can be drawn
there. At the college there is a geed
ground, but it is also small,
and is used almost exclusively by
the students. If the clubs which, will
contend for the championship of this city,
during the coming season, would lease an
unoccupied field near the city (and if pos
sible en the line of the street railway) they
would certainly be able te raise sufficient
funds from our citizens te pay for it. The
paeplc of Lancaster migbt in that way be
induced te take a greater interest in the
game. Clubs from a distance always dis dis
like te come te Lancaster for the reason
that the gieuuds hcic are se peer, but by
hireing a level field, that fault could be
remedied anil plenty of geed gamcu might
be plajvd here.

Happenings in the lloreugh.
On Monday evening Jehn Pyle, jr., started

(arming. Mr. Pyle has the well-wishes of
the community.
The plumbers' business here is booming,
and in a sheittime most of our resi
dences and business places will be lighted

The borough is refunding its water lean
by issuing $100 and $500 R jier cent, bends,
instead of 0 per cents, new outstanding.
The amount te be refunded is 35,000'
This will be a saving in interest of $350,

Monday afternoon a two boys named
Garmau, residing near llerst's mill, were
driving away fieni II. S. Stauller's hard
ware store, Mount Jey. one of the shafts
of their wagon broke fiightcning the horse
and causing him te run away. "When
crossing the railway at Ihubara street the
horse fell, and was caught by a bystander.
The wagon was turned ever en its side and
one of the boys tin own en the ground and
ightly injured. The horse also sustained
slight injuries.
At last there are some prospects for an
abatement in the custom of surprise par
ties. The 'elde folks" who have quite
extensively indulged in the practice will
wind up with a grand ball in Exchange
hall at an early day.
The lime stacks which were fired
shortly before the present blew, will pro
duce an inferior quality of lime. In some
staeks the draught has been se strong that
much of the material remains unburncd.
At 2:45 p. m. en Sunday, the corucr-stenc

near Newtown. Raphe township.
Jehn Kepf and family started te-day for
Lisben, Lynn county, where he will work
at farming.
On Tuesday morning a runaway horse
.ittached te a spring wagon dashed
through East Main street en a 2:40 gait,
and succeeded in making a lew collisions
and a Hurry of excitement. Jehn Stauffer,
of near Marietta, had driven te Snyder's
mill, directly cast of Mount Jey, and was
transacting business, when a blast in a
stone quarry near by started the horse en
the rampage. At Jehn Fensterniachei's
blacksmith shop a wagon was struck ;
several squares farther west a beard
wagon standing in front of Bieneman,
Lengcuecker & Ce.'s store, was struck,
causing both wagons te overturn. The
horse was caught in front of the residence
of Levi Heffman, and, strange te say, there
was but slight damage sustained by either
of the vehicles.
Smith, llichart & Ce. have rented the

Death lu the Jail.
Jehn Schmidt, who was committed te
the county prison by Alderman Spurrier,
a. few days age, for being drunk and dis
orderly, died in that institution about neon
te-day of congestion of the brain. The
man had severe, bruises en his body
when arrested, and he is believed te have
been beaten by some one. An inquest will
be held en the body.
Drunk and Disorderly.
Harriet Draper, colored, get drun last
evening, aud after being arrested she was
held for a hearing by Alderman Dennelly
of the Seventh ward.
Singular Accident.
This morning about 10 o'clock a party of
boys were playing ball near the point
at which the Pennsylvania railroad cresses
the Harrisburg pike in the northwestern
part of this city. When the Hanover ac
commodation train came along the base
ball with which the boys were playing,
rolled under the wheel of one of the cars,
and almost threw it off the track.
The yarn and rubber of which
which the ball was composed is se unyield
ing that even the weight of the car, which
ran ever it, did nothing mere than burst
the cover and slightly flatten the ball.
The concussion of the car was se great
that the conductor stepped the train, and
Officer Brady, of the railroad police force,
who was en the train arrested seven of the
boys and took them before Alderman Mc-
Conomy for a violation of the railroad act.
They were held for a hearing te take place
te-morrow morning.
Organization of Street Committee.
Lat night the street committee met and
organized, all the members being present
except Mr. Sales.
I). McMullen. esq., was chosen president,
and S. W. Raub, clerk.
The old rules were readopted and a vote
of thanks, for faithful service, was ten
dered te J. K. Barr, the retiring clerk.
Driving Accident.

Eislcy of Rockland street, this city, while
