TUESDAY EVENING, APRIL 13, 1880.
A BIKD'S MIsTB.Y. -
Frem lii3 home in an Eastern bungalow.
In sight of the everlasting snow
Ot the grand Himalayas, row en row.
Thus wrote my frieml:
"I had traveled far
Frem the Alghan towers of Candahar,
Through tht sand-white plains of Slnde
Sagar ;
" And once, when the daily march wan o'er,
As tired I sat in my tented deer,
Hepe failed me, as never it failed uulerc.
" In swarming city, at wayside Jane,
By the Indus' bank, en the scorching pluin,
I had taught and my teaching all seemed
vain.
" Xe glimmer of light (I Mghed) appear.-,;
TIik Modern's Fate and the Buddhist's lears
Have gloomed their worship this thousand
years.
"'Fer Christ and his truth I stand alone
In the midst ei milliens: a sand-grain blown
Against yen temple of ancient stone
'" A zoen may level it ! ' Faith forsook
My soul, as I turned en the pile te leek ;
Then, rising, my saddened way I took
" Te its lefty root, for the cooler air :
I gazed, and marveled : hew crumbled were
The walls I had deemed se llrm and fair:
" Fer, edged in a rilt ei the massive stone,
Most plainly rent by its roots alone,
A beautiful pecpul-tree had grown :
"Whose gradual stress would still expand
The crevice, and topple upon the sand
The temple, while o'er its w reck should stand
'The tree in its living vendure : Who
Could compass the thought? The bird that
Hew
Ilitherward, dropping a seed that grew.
-IU mere te shiver this ancient wall
Than earthquake, war, simoen, or all
The cent inies, in their lapse and fall !
"Then I knelt by the riven granite there.
And my -eul -lmeh; oil' its weight et eaie.
As my voice roe clear en the tropic air :
"'The living seed- I have dropped remain
I ii the clcll : Lord, quicken with dew and rain.
Then temple and mosque shall be rent in
twain !' "
Margarit J. Preston.
A 'ew Story.
An anecdote of Geerges Sand which has
never before been in print, bm which was
told me by one present, conies te my
memory, "it was at Nohant. and in the
early spring, when the evenings are just
smiling into twilight. Liszt and Chepin,
anions many ether celebrities, were guests
at the hospitable heu-e of the author of
" Nalvedre :" and it was the custom after
dinner for anyone te listen for a few minute-
te s.ime 'inspiration of Liszt and Chop
i:i played In ic tlfl: One morning a dis
cussion a:ee between the two giants as te
which wa the greater. Li-zr made geed
his claims te immortality with great elo
quence : after he had done Chepin simply
lemarked. "Oi' course, you area great
man. but I am still gi eater than you. feri
uin imitate your unest inspirations per
fectly, whereas I defy you te imitate inc."
Liszt openly avowed that he could net
imitate the "great "Frederic.' but at the
.same time eilered te bet that he himself
could net be imitated. as bis
current of thought changed from
day te day, and he'expressed himself en
the piano according te the inspiration of
the moment. Chepin took the bet. nobody
being present but the two great men and
my friend. The following evening, after
dinner, everyone, as was the custom, sat
in silence in the music room waiting for
one of the two great musicians te play.
Suddenly a grand theme began, brilliant
but pathetic ; passion in the bass and a
fervent tepensein the treble ; and then a
grand dominant that stilled and overcame
all. followed by a glorious flight of melody
that seemed te ask for pardon, and then
die away in regret. ''Brave Liszt!''
-everyone cried : ' hew you give yourself in
your music ! That is one of your finest in
spirations ! AVlie could mistake it'.'"'
I'oer Llzst came trembling up te Geerge
Sand, and said, "Madame, it is net I : it is
Chepin playing. ! He must be a god !" If
these lines meet the eyes of the Abbe Liszt,
lie will endorse every word of this anec
dote, which is interesting and valuable, as
showing the wide gulf that separates talent
no matter of what high order, from pure
genius. Whitehall liccicw.
