I'" LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENdER, ?THUESDAY APRIL 8, 1880. .'i. - Br.- It V ff S Lancaster Intelligencer. THDESDATlEVENINa, APRIL 8, 1880. AN INCIDENT. Unarmed and unattended walks the Cear, Through Moscow's busy street one winter's day. The crowd uncover as his face they see, "Ged greet the Czar !" they say. Along his path there moved a funeral. Gray spectacle of poverty and wee. A wretched sledge, dragged by one weary man, Slowly across the snow. And en the sledge, blown by the winter wind, Lay a peer coffin, very rude and bare. And he who drew It bent before his lead, With dull and fcullcn air. The Emperor stepped and beckoned te the man; "Who ls't thou bcarcst Le the grave:" he said. " Only a soldier. Sire !" the short reply. "Only a soldier dead." ' Only a soldier !" musing, said the Czar ; "Only u Russian, who was peer and brave. Move en. I fellow. Such an one gees net Unhonercd te his grave." lie bent his head, and silent raised hjs cap ; The Czar et all the Russians, pacing slew, Following the coffin, as again it went, Slew ly across the snow. The passers el the street, all wondering. Looked en that sight, and then followed silently; I'casant and prince, and artisan and clerk. All in one company. Still, as they went, the crowd grew ever mere, Till thousands steed around the friendless grave, Led by that princely heart, who, royal, true, Honored the peer and brave. Agnes Maedencll. DUX GOODS. Neib. This incident if narrated by a lady who w:ii living in Moscow when it took place. mm m Farmer and Gardener. Get Beady for Planting. Advised by the Gcrmantewn Telegraph. In a few weeks mere nearly all garden crops will be iu order te put in, and new is the time te procure the seed and get them ready for use. Of course the caily peas and onions, if net new planted, should be at tended te at once. In electing peas wc would set out, te begin with, the Extra Early, followed by McLean's Little Gem, Eugenie, McLean's Prolific, Champien of England and Blue Imperial. These wc should select from the en tire list. The Leng Scarlet Radish can also be sewn new in a warm border follow ed by the Early White Turuin-Roetcd. The first crop of Sugar Cern the large eiimt-reweu should be planted net earlier than the 18th of this month, if the weather be favorable, te be followed every ten or twelve days thereafter with the Evergreen Sugar, which we have grown for ever twenty-live years, and have net leuuu any yet te equal it. There should be six or seven nlantimrs in all. in order te have a constant supply for the family until hard lrest in October. Better Hay and Pasture. Anyone passing through agricultural districts, say in June when the hcruage has about or nearly reached its full growth must notice hew much land is only half or a quarter utilized, by allowing the un checked growth of all sorts et weeds. A large proportion of this land is pastured, and the way the peer cattle have te Ecek out the little grass from among the over whelming weeds in a source of actual sad ness. These pasture-fields, tee, are al lowed te go en producing noxious weeds for a series of years without an effort being made te get rid of them by the surest mole known te the observing farmer frequent cultivation. Then, again, we see the same proportion of weeds in many fields from which the cattle-hay is te be cut and this is done year after year just as though cows and ether cattle would eat the weeds any mere readily dry than green. It is as apparent as the sun at noonday that te whatever extent weeds are allowed te grew just te that extent is the land asXud in fact worse than wasted. New .'.at this can be avoided is clear ; and that it can be profitably avoided in most cases scarcely admits of doubt. And what is true of the pasture fields, .is the same where the herbage is left te" become hay. The geed clean field is the exception. Net only the ex-eye daisy, but sorrel and plain tain, and asters of various kinds, which cattle care no mere for when dry than when green, constitute the bulk of what is te be hay; aud it is tolerably geed btuff which has but one-fourth of extraneous matter. We have before suggested that our agri cultural societies, which give se many and such high premiums for fast-trotting horses, might a least share a little for the encouragement of the feed which the noble animal is te cat. Premiums ftr well grown hay, clean hay, hay from improved grasses, and well-managed hay fields, would surely be objects worthy of the at tention of even a ''State agricultural so ciety,"' and we think it will become se if the press will unite in commending the sub jects te general attention. Surely there is no greater oyeserc than a field, looking as if it might produce thirty bushels of wheat, seventy-five of corn, or from two te three tens of first-class hay te an acre, allowed te be covered with masses of noxious of weeds, which can and should be destroyed. A merchant from the city who may pass through a rural section, and seeing these myriad of exeyed daisy flowers, will almost invariably ask why they are there, and if they cannot be exterminated and geed hay aud grain raised instead.
