FRIDAY EVENING, APRIL 2, 1880.
Dwarf Fears.
The common length of life of the dwarf
pear tree, which a few years age was lim
ited by these who knew nothing or hut
little about them te five or six years, and
at farthest ten years, is new set down by
some experienced in raising fruit from
them te from twenty or thirty years.
This, according te what we knew about
them, is nearer the mark. "We have a
number new bearing full crops annually
that we planted thirty-two years age, and
we see no reason why they should net con
tinue te live and bear at least ten years
longer. This length of life, owing te the
cheapness of their first cost, the earliness
in which they bear and the finer size and
quality of the fruit produced, is leDg
enough and fully compensating for the
longer life of standard trees.
The opposition te growing pears en
quince stock, which was se rampant from
ten te twenty years age, has considerably
diminished of late, and their increased
cultivation would new be mere apparent
than ever if the young trees were te be
generally obtained in the nurseries. It is
probable, however, that since they have
again become popular that they will be for
sale at all our nurseries where fruit trees
are te be purchased.
"Vc have never advocated the raising of
pears en dwarf trees for marketing ; for
whatever demand there may be for them
at advanced prices ever pears grown upon
their own stock, they would net be as pro
fitable, unless in connection with the rais
ing of small fruits, where the breadth of
land devoted te these purposes is limited.
But in private gardens where space is con
tracted and where it is desirable te raise
choice pears, none but the dwarf should be
cultivated ; and no one will raise any ether
who has once tried them.
Seme people in their opposition te grow
ing dwarf pears talk as though there was
a great mystery in it, and none but these
strictly brought up te it can knew any
thing about it. New, there is nothing
mere erroneous, for they arc as easily
grown as any ether fruit. Twe or three
things are only te be observed in the
business. The first is te set thein
three or four inches below the junc
tion of the pear and the quince stock.
Second, set them in well-dug, rich soil,
the same in which one would plant a
bed of cabbages ; third, carefully see that
any worms that may have secured an abid
iug place in the quince weed while standing
in the nursery arc removed. Then mulch
when "the soil becomes dry and
the weather het during the first season
If the top is two large and spreading
clip it eir some, especially if the
roots arc net abundant. Rampant grow
ers should be pruned yearly te force early
bearing. If the stems are washed at the
beginning of the winter with whale-oil
soap water, a pound te say four gallons of
water, their health may be regarded as
secured. Germanteirn Telegraph.
