Notes of Value ana Interest te Hiin. Geruiuntewn Telegraph. It is stated that the disease of sheep known as the " ret " or "bane," is pre vailing with great fatality in portions of England, produced, it is believed, by the extreme wetness of the summer followed by unusual cold. Perhaps as many a 100,000 theep, principally ewes, have died from this cause. In Gloucester, Oxen and Warwick parishes comparative ly few are left. A correspondent of the Ohie Farmer thinks that the mammoth clever is the best variety te cultivate because it is of larger growth than ether kinds and makes mere manure. It can be pastured in that State until June, and when it is plowed under for wheat the ground is enriched te a far greater extent than when the small clever is grown. When the correspondent allowed it te go te seed he obtained sixty bushels from twelve acres, valued at five dollars per bushel. The pasture is worth about what it costs te cut and thresh the seed. This variety he believes has an ad vantage ever all ethers in every respect, except that the hay it makes is of an inferior-quality. This, however, may be a very important consideration. The agricultural editor of the Baltimore Weekly San, says that complaints arc often made against farmers that they neglect te raise many fruits aud vegetables for home consumption which might be done with but little additional trouble. The editor suggests that if the garden is net large enough for the purpose it can be made se by including enough of the adjoining land te give room for long rows of plants and greater ease in plowing. Ilaspberrics can be planted in the outer rows with vegeta bles between, and strawberries in shorter rows by themselves. In this way with proper cultivation small fruits and vegeta bles can be raised with as little trouble as Held crops. By this time, seeing hew simple it is te raise one's own asparagus, se as te have it fiesh from the garden, few people who have any garden are willing te de without a bed of it sullicicut for family demand. Truckers grew it with the same case that they de a patch of potatoes or cabbages, using the plow and harrow. Seme of them possess the knack of growing it te a very large size, which take the eye in the mar ket and sell at two or three prices of that of the ordinary size, though it is really net se geed. In the first ten days in April the coarser part of the winter's covering should be removed and the remainder forked in. This should be followed by a coat e" rough salt, which will suffice for any additional manure for the season and keep down all weeds. Care, however, must be taken net te apply salt te young beds that have net been cut for at least one year, or serious results may fellow. m nm Age of Apple Trees. Gcrmantewn Telegraph. In one of the Western horticultural so cieties the question came up as te the age apple trees will reach, aud the opinion pre vailed that thirty years is the extent te which they will prove profitable. This is remarkable, considering the supposed fer tility of Western soils, and the generally supposed favorable Western climate ; and we must believe until better informed, that something else besides climate or soil must affect the longevity of Western apple trees. In this part of the world we get nothing of any consequence from anapplc tree till it is ten or fifteen years old. It is three or four before we get if from the nursery, seldom less than five years mere before it begins te bear, and some five years have te be added before we can get anything like a full crop. If we had but about fifteen mere it would hardly be worth the while te grew fruit trees. Thirty years of such husbandry would require that we calcu lated about three years te a full crop from the ground, which would be worse than giving a whole year te nothing, as was once the rule in summer-fallowing. We rather suspect that where trees cease te be profitable after thirty years of age, it is from some ne glect which has affected the constitution of the tree, It may be that borers have been allowed te beard and ledge in the trunk free of charge for the accomedation ; or the soil has been allowed te become tee peer ; or they have been allowed te bear all they were disposed te de without thinning or assistance of any kind ; in any of which cases thirty years would undoubtedly de for them. If all these things arc properly seen te, and all the ether little matters attended te that these who cultivate fruit for profit ought te knew about, there is no reason why an apple tree may net be profitable for fifty years, cither in the West or anywhere.
