&&& I3&&2 I .. .' . LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, THURSDAY, APRIL 1.1880. Carry the News te Grantellus. Mr. Ryder, a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, has dis covered in Fairmount park a little reyria-pDtl-like scolependrella, which is regarded as a creature of great importance scientifically. The extraordinary one might say bizarre combination of characters presented by the animal makes it what has been known hince Agassiz's time as a synthetic type that is, a form which com bines characteristics of several orders or widely separated groups. It, in fact, represents the ideal form, from which it may be supposed that the great six-legged group of insects has been derived, as the number of joints in its body corresponds with that of the larval stages of the greater part of this group. It seems, in truth, te be an insect with legs te every joint instead of te only three, as in the latter. This view of its relationship mere than ever jus tifies its recognition as the type of an order under the name sympyla, signifying that its organization represents in a combined form that of several lines of development of descent. When the embryology or development from the egg of this little creature is studied, the probabilities arc that a story of the highest significance will be revealed, perhaps one of the most im im peitant ever recorded in the annals of entomological science. Herse and Ituggy Stelen. This morning a bay horse attached te a piano-box top buggy and belonging te Jehn Wisslcr. of East Lampeter township, was taken from the front of the Leepard hotel, en East King strcet. It was at first thought the boys took the team merely te get a ride, but as it was net delivered at 3 o'clock tills afternoon fears are entertained that it may have been stolen. Pension Paper. Prof W. K. Brooks, of Jehns Hepkins university, Baltimore, gave his experience in hatching of oysters by artifi cial impregnation. He mixed the fluid of female and the fluid of the male and began experiments in an aquar ium, but the animals were se infinit esimally small he was unable te find te them. He then placed the fluid in a watch crystal, in which half a million young oysters could readily swim about. They made a shell in from two days te a week, and could even swim then. By computation he found that 123,000,000 young oysters would fill a cubic inch. The female oyster would lay eggs in a year from birth ; in fact the oyster became sex ually mature in that time. On an average oysters were marketable at the age of three years, and sooner if they had geed living foundation. The Allegheny City Horrer. It has been disclosed that the death of Jehn Gearing, an insane pauper at the Al legheny city (Pa.) peer farm, was a murder of the most brutal kind. Gearing had by some means set fire te his bed en the morn ing of the 6th of February, when Rebert Crawford, the assistant superintendent,' went te the room, accompanied by a slightly insane man named Coelhoff. The two then beat Gearing, smashing in his skull. The carpenter of the institution was ordered te make a coffin, and when he asked te be al lowed te measure the corpse he was told by Crawford that it was net necessary, but te make it of the size such as he told him. Dr. Smith, the resident physician, was net told and knew nothing about the death. Crawford and Coelhoff are under arrest. TAE-UEEL ROMANCE. Marriage et Sliss Amelia Linkhaw, who Achieved Fame anil a Husband by Slaying Her Alleged Se ducer. Cincinnati Enquirer Special from Lumberton, N. C. The readers of the Enquirer will doubt less remember the tragic occurrence at this place last spring, resulting in the death of Edward llartman, a Baltimore drummer, at the hands of Miss Amelia Linkhaw, who charged him with having ruined her. Miss Linkhaw, who was tried and acquitted, gave birth te a child a few weeks after the sheeting of her seducer. The romance of the young mother's life was net te end here, but the most inter esting chapter of it was reserved for te-day. During her imprisonment Miss Linkhaw received letters of sympathy from some of the best people all ever the country and was called upon by ladies from many sec tions Among her correspondents was Charles Little, an officer of the custom house at Sullivan's Island, near Charleston, S. C. He became deeply interested in the fate of the fair prisoner and wrote te her regularly every week or two. On the night the trial was expected te close Little started from the island in a small skitf te be present and learn, at the earliest moment, the fate of the woman in whom he had become se deeply interested. The night was stormy anil m attempting te reach (Jliaricsten in the frail craft it was driven against a snag in the river and capsized and the ardent lever came near being drowned. By al most superhuman efforts the determined lever succeeded in gaining the shore. Nothing daunted he obtained clothing and again started en his errand, reaching Florence, S. C, iu time te learn that Miss Linkhaw had been acquitted Frem that time up te the present the levers kept up a regular correspondence, which resulted in their marriage te-day. Early this morning Miss Linkhaw, accom panied by her sister and child, left here by the early train for Florence, S. C, a little town near the North Carolina line. where they were joined by Little and the marriage ceremony was quietly per formed at the residence of a Methodist minister. The bridal party, accompanied by the child of bride, left for the home of the husband in the interior of Seuth Carolina. The lady was neatly and becomingly attir ed iu a fashionably-cut and elegant light gray silk and looked exceedingly pretty. She is about 23 years old, rather petite, with chestnut-brown hair, which curls naturally. The lady, whose life has been such a romantic one, is highly educated, of retiring manners, and before the unhappy event which se clouded her young life was the reigning belle of the county. Extensive Kailreatl Building A commercial paper in New Yerk prints a list of new railroads constructed and pro jected within the last seven months, which occupies no less than four columns.
