THEDBAMA.
The " Illnminatl" Pronounced Peer Play.
Last evening the new play "Thelllu
minati" received its first production in
this city before an audience which, although
a geed size, would have been a great deal
larger had it net been for the unfavorable
criticism of the play by the press "of Phila
delghia, where the piece was played dur
ing the whole of la&t week. Persons who
saw the play here last night will net won
der why it received such notices. The
play is said te be dramatized from
Dumas novel of "Jeseph Balseme,"
te which it bears no resemblance
Seme of the scenes are full of interest, but
for the most part it is very dull and unin
teresting and is calculated te tire an audi
ence mere than te please it. The leading
character of the piece is Jeseph Baltame,
who was impersonated by F. C. Bangs, a
very jroed actor, who has appeared here
before. Ilis acting was appreciated by the
audience, who sympathized with him in
his energetic efforts te please them with a
bad play. The company is made up of actors
who are well-known and among whom was
"Walter Lennex, who was funny as Cheva
lier DcGeurmand. Misses Henrietta Vaders
and E. McCenncIl made the most out of
the characters of the Marquise and Andre,
while the rest of the support was net satis
factory. The cast was net the same as the
one which produced the play in Philadel
phia last week. A number of the charac
ters arc new being taken by different par
ties, some of whom might rehearse te ad
vantage. Last night was the first
"htatul" made by the company,
hince leaving Philadelphia and after
the company have played together for some
nights the piece will ran with a great deal
mere smoothness. Tbe play was hand
somely mounted, the scenery being entire
ly new, and the costumes new.
TIic only fault any one can find with
the show is the play, which certainly
failed te please the audience that witnessed
it last evening.
It is a pity te put such a geed company
of actors en the read with it, but this can
easily be explained. Several weeks before
the play was brought out in Philadelphia
the contract for its production in the east
ern cities of the state were made. It was
then thought that the play would be a
grand success, but it was just the reverse,
and the contracts then made are new be
ing can icd out.
One gentleman, who sat the perfor
mance out last niglit, said te another this
morning who had left the hall before its
conclusion : " Yeu should have stayed for
the last act, it was the best." "Why was
it the best?" replied the ether gentleman.
"Because it was the last," was the
answer. This opinion is unanimous.
Tlie Tobacco Market. ,
Our local buying season maybe regarded
as "closed." The amount rcmaiuinirin
the hands of buyers is se comparatively
small, and the lets se widely scattered that
buyers lind it unprofitable te ride the
county iu scirch of it, and nearly all of
them have left the licld. Growers who
have net yet disposed of their crops will
.mostly have te bring their goods te town,
nr held out special inducements te buyers te
visit them, if they wish te dispose of their
goods.
But little has been doing in 1878 leaf
since our last. We hear of one small
packing of 152 cases, of line goods sold by
J. 11. Bitiicr te ltesin & Ce., of New Yerk,
en private terms.
It is reported en the street that Dr.
Kendig has sold his packing of 1,000 cases
of 1879 te A. Cehen, of New Yerk, at 13
cents through ; that Isaac II. Kauffman
has sold a packing of 1,000 cases te I. G.
Pomeroy, of Hartferd, Conn., at 19
through ; and that Bitner & Zeek have sold
between 500 and 000 cases, en private
terms. We give the rumors for what they
are worth, merely stating that the figures
arc net given us by the parties most deep
ly interested. It is a fact, however, job
bers and manufacturers, are making in
quiries for the '79 crop, and that offers
have been made for several large packings
and declined.
Planters arc making preliminary pre
paration for the coming crop. Barnyard
manure is being bought by them wherever
they can lind it ; many growers have sewn
their seed, aud nearly all have at least pre
paicd their seed beds. The bread acres
are being prepared for the reception of the
plants when the time shall arrive te set
them out ; and thcre are indications all
around that the acreage of this county,
bc cemiug nelson, will be larger than
.ever-beferc. Neighboring counties are also
waking up and engaging in this profitable
jbranch of farming ; aud should the season
prove propitious, it requires no gift of
prophecy te declare that the crop of 1880
will be by all odds the largest ever grown
jn Pennsylvania.

Kustcr Concert and Dance.
The Easter concert and dance of the
Lancaster Masnnercher, given in Mamner Mamner

te the high German standard. The con

o'clock, p. m.
New Telegraph Office.
It is said that the American Union tele
graph company will shortly establish an
efiice iu this city. This company has
four wires running through the city en the

pany, and proposes te bring its lines down
town.

MEDICAL.
Brandy as a Kedicine.
The following article was voluntarily sent te
Mr. II. E. Slaymaker, Agent for Reigart's Old
Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi
cian et this county, who lias extensively used
the Brandy referred te in his regular practice.
It Is commended te tbe attention of these af
flicted with
Indigestion and Dyspepsia.
BRANDY AS A MEDICINE.
This new much abused Alcoholic Stimulant
was never intended as a beverage, but te be
used as a medicine of great potency in the cure
of some of the destructive diseases which
sweep away their annual thousands of victims.
With a purely philanthropic motive we pre
sent te the favorable notice et invalids espe
cially these afflicted with Unit miserable dis
ease Dyspepsia, a specific remedy, which ia
nothing mera or less than
Brandy.
The aged, with feeble appetite and mere or
less debility, will find this simple medicine,
when used properly,
A Sovereign Remedy
or all their ills and aches. Be it, however
strictly understood that we prescribe and use
but one article, and that is;
REIGARTS OLD BRANDT,
Sold by our enterprising young friend, H'E.
SLAYMAKER. This Brandy has steed (he
test for years, and lias never failed, as far
as our experience extends, and we therefore
give It the preference ever all ether Brandies,
nemattcrwith hew manyjaw-breakingFrench
titles they arc branded. One-fourth of the
money that is yearly thrown away en various
impotent dyspepsia specifics would suffice te
buy all the Brandy te cure any such casa or
cases. In proof of the curative powers et
Reigart's Old Brandy,
In cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon num
hers of witnesses one case in particular wa
cite:
A hard-working farmer had been afflicted
with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number of
years; his stomach would reject almost every
kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con
stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te
restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread,
and as a beverage he used McGrann's Reet
Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new,
S reached at times, and in his discourses often
eclalmcd earnestly against all kinds of strong
drink. When advised te try
Reigart's Old Brandy,
In his case, he looked up with astonishment,
but after hearing of its wonderful effects in
the cases of some of his near acquaintances, he
at last consented te fellow our advice. He
used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the
first bottle giving him an appetite, and before
the second was taken he was a sound man.with
a stomach capable of digesting anything which
he chose te eat. He still keeps it and uses a lit
tle occasionally; and since lie has this medi
cine be has been of very little pecuniary bene
fit te the doctor. A Fractisme Pkysiciax.
