Old St. Cunibert's Church by the Walls of
Cologne.
Built by Archbishop Cenrad in 1247, St.
Cunibert's church has evidently undergone
exterior restoration and had Gothic addi
tions. Originally it evidently Tvas Roman
esque in design, but pointed arches are in
close proximity te rounded, 'which present
te the eye many architectural malforma
tions. Romanesque was the architecture
of elder Cologne and this, with its parent,
the Byzantine, had great influence
throughout the middle ages upon the ex
terior form and interior decoration of the
churches. St. Cunibert's church is no ex
ception te this rule and still stands pre
vailingly Romanesque, although much
changed by Gothic additions. Xcar the
church is a very old gateway, which, from
its Latin inscription, indicates it te be the
entrance te the Cleister, as originally St.
Cunibert's church was a Cloistral church.
The ground en which I am standing evi
dently also formed part of the Cleister.
Opposite is a large hospital for " incura
bles," and from its windows strange
faces gaze vacantly at one. May the Great
Christ reward these who have it in charge.
All around mcarc the evidences of monas
tic cloistral life. The walls of the cloister
have undergone many changes, yet the
lower parts still remain. Seme have been
adapted te ether uses, yet a monastic im
press is still very apparent. Other por
tions are entered by the most inconceiva
ble doers opening into small courts
Strange, strange were the surroundings,
weird, weird were the gray walls and irreg
ular reefs of St. Cunibert's cleistcral re
mains. Within the church is very interesting, as
it's interior has net suffered se much from
restoration as the exterior, and therefore
gives one an idea hew the churches looked
sonic centuries age. By no means cleanly
is its interior, but in this respect St. Cnni
bcit does net differ from many of the Ger
man churches. Many Mural paintings arc
te be ceu,aud though indistinct from age,
they htill show the school of art te which
they belonged, the Romanesque. Twe
especially, te the left, arc especially inter
esting, as they evidently show the relation
of Mural church frescoes te the Fra An
gelica school, which latter was mere clois cleis
tral, and belongs te a lat3r period. The
rich gilt back-ground of the former and
the highly colored figures which rest en
them, stand as cerclated te that school.
Four large figures frescoed en the square
columns are very characteristic. As I
steed before these specimens of the elder
Romanesque frescoes, one could net but
wonder at the wonderful care which must
have been used by the artist who laid the
colors en these stone columns, se that they
still tenaciously cling te their surface.
Wonderful is it what martyrdom from
iconoclasts some of these elder frescoes
undergo. Even in prc-Rcformatien times,
the hands of Gothic restorers covered them
with the first coat of paint, and in their
places with something far less artistic, per
haps a Monastic legend. Later in Reforma
tion times, Protestant iconoclasts applied
a coating of white-wash. In modern times,
when such extremes arc being dropped, the
white-wash having eaten into the oil of the
Gothic decorrtien, has caused both te peel
off the stone, causing the original Roman
esque, the first form of decoration en the
column, te reappear, after being buried for
many hundred years. This is only partly
true of St. Cunibert church, as it has net
at any time been in Protestant hands.
Strictly true is it of many churches in
North Germany. As I steed before these
figures one could net but have a feeling of
awe stronger than that produced by an oil
painting.
This Romanesque Mural at t is se rich and
distinctive se noble and dignified. It
docs net strive te be realistic or imitate the
human form, but confronts one as art for
the soul rather than the eye te drink in.
It produces an elevated feeling and has the
tendency te lift up the mind, rather than
sensualize the eye, which effect is often
produced by the vulgarities and nudities of
the masters. But one must visit the choir,
that part of the church which we often
call the recess. This is considered the
chief attraction of the interior, as it has
been embellished with Mural encaustics by
Welter. Very effective is this form of work.
It would be well for the Reb Jehn school
te take a few mere lessens, as our Ameri
can churches would be benefitted thereby.
Yet justice te this school demands that te
it must be accorded the honor of having
introduced into many American churches
with the last decade, this churchly form of
Romanesque art. The stained glass in the
choir windows arc ever tinkling with color,
and one's eye is delighted with the ever
changing, kaleidescepic effect. This is a
feature in the stain-glass of Cologne that
it sparkles and fairly laughs with joy, or
is subdued and cries with sorrow.
The choir is the only part of the interior
which has been in modern times restored,
but the entire interior is seen te be judi
ciously decorated. Our old friends, the
Romanesque figures, will be retouched with
coloring, which will somewhat diminish
their historical value as representative of
the elder Romanesque period in art. May
St. Cunibert watch ever your old Romap Remap
isque church, and bring brighter evangelic
light within your walls te priest and peo
ple, when in your new Mural decoration
you will again be re-dedicated te the wor
ship of the Most High. Then will the sim
plicity of your patron saint again be an
example te your congregation, and the
brightness of your new dress will ever be
an incentive te renewed piety en the part
of your priesthood. Such are the thoughts
suggested by a visit te a church whose
history is as old as that of St. Cunibert's,
located by the river wall of Cologne.

a boy crossed the street te meet him and
said:
" Maybe you haven't get anything te de
with it, but there's a woman dying back
of that house there."
" I should rather think I had something
te de with it ! " replied the officer, and he
made haste across the street and disap
peared around the comer of the house.
There he came upon a woman who was
hanging up skeins of yarn fresh from the
dye kettle.
" Is the party dead yet ?" he eagerly in
quired. Party ? Who's a party, sir ? "
"Isn't there a sick woman here?"
''Xe, sir! I'm the sickest woman in
this neighborhood, and I weighed ICG
pounds last night."
" I was told that a woman was dying
back here,"
'I don't believe it! Yeu are spying
around te see if wc threw dead cats in the
alley, and it's mean and contemptible in
you ! Take yourself out of this or I'll go
down te the chief?"
lie went out, vexed and annoyed. The
boy was leaning against the fence across
the street, and he called out :
"TIM I telt VAll e iirn9"
"Bey!" replied the efticcr, "don't ever
'trifle with me again ! There was no dying
woman in there !"
"Was there net? Yeu thought I was
stocking the cards en you, eh? See?"
The officer scratched his head, began te
smile, and finally laughed as he said :
' Ah ! I see ! There was a knot in the
clothes line and the woman had en blue
stockings ! Puity geed pun that ; but you
shouldn't have lied te me about her dying.
Death's a very selcms thing, and I can't
stand any jokes about it. Run along,
new."
The Family Rudder.
Virginia (New) Chronicle.
A Comsteckcr who was having his hair
cut yesterday morning gave the barber
particular instructions net te remove a
long lock that projected in a somewhat
unsightly way lrem the trout et his head.
"It don't become you," said the bar
ber. " Can't help that, " said the customer.
"Better let me take it off," said the bar
ber. "Just you leave it as it is," said the
man.
"But," persisted the barber, "I can't
give you a smooth, decent cut if I leave
the hair se long in front. It will leek like
the very devil. I can't see what you want
it left there for ?"
" That's because you don't knew what
it is you dent knew the use of it."
"I knew it's a bunch of hair and knew
that it's devilish unbecoming just where
it is."
"Yes; it's a bunch of hair, and it is
something mere than a a bunch of hair
it's the family rudder."
"The family what?"
" The family rudder. When things don't
go right at home fny wife always grabs that
lock of hair. She would feel lest without
it. When she gets held of that she can
handle me street me in the right course
t-e te speak and when I go in the right
course the whole family go in the right
course, and all is well. I've get used te it
new and don't mind it. Should I loose my
hair and become bald, or should you give
me a lighting cut all ever, there would be
no way of steering me ; I should become
unmanageable, and sooner or later a total
wreck. Ne, sir; don't you disturb the
family rudder."
The World is Honest.

A dozen men were yesterday leafing
away the rainy hours in a business place
near the ferry deck when the conversation
turned upon the subject of general public
rascality. A citizen said he had given a
boy a quarter te get chauge and had never
seen him again ; another said he wouldn't
trust his own grandfather, and a third
would give $100 te see au honest man.
" I have net yet lest my faith in human
nature," finally remarked a man en a back
seat. "Any of you may call in a stranger
te us all, and I will give him a five-dollar bill
te go and get changed. If he fails te come
back I lese the money; if he returns you
will see hew foolish your assertions are."
Half a dozen men rushed te the deer.
A seedy, gaunt and evil-looking African
was paddling by in the rain, and he was
selected te make the test.
" Stranger, " said the man who hadn't
lest confidence, " take this five dollar bill
around the corner and get it changed and
I will give you ten cents. "
The black man departed without a word,
and for the next ten minutes the laugh
was en the man who sent him. It died
away, however, as the African slouched
in, handed out the bill, and said :
"Irunncd all ober an' nobody could
change him. "
lie was given his ten cents and the man
who lest the quarter by the boy said he
couldn't have believed such an exhibition
of honesty if he had net witnessed it, and
he was willing te buy the cider for the
crowd.
It was only after the cider had been de
stroyed and paid for that he learned that
the bill given the negre was a base coun
terfeit which no one would accept.
