THE BEPORTEK.
Who tramps and tramps along the strectB,
And benea each one perchance he meets,
With "Hew are you, Jim," "Ilew'd de Joe,"
"Helle Alex, what de you knew?"
The Reporter.
Who walks and walks until his corns
Seem like ten devils, each with horns,
Each horn a lance te prod his feet,
Each prod just digging ler the meat?
The Reporter.
Who gets no cash but taketli notes,
Who lies for men concerned for votes,
Who tells the truth the' heavens tall,
Who dauccth at the F. U. IJ.'s ball 7
The lteperter.
Who turneth night into the day.
Who gireth all the boys away,
Who seeth life as it is,
Who kneweth his own little biz?
The Ueperter.
Who dieth full of honors wen,
Who oft is called "son of a gun,"
Who, when he wears an angel's wings.
Will write his paper 'bout heaven'n tilings ?
The Ueperter.
Shearing Evergreen Trees.
Gcrmantewn Telegraph.
We have looked in vain for sonic aban
donment of the custom, te be seen in se
many places, of shearing evergreen trees
into unnatural shapes. Xew, no one ob
jects te a tree cut here or there, if the ma
jority are left te develop the natural
beauties nature gave them. But that any
man in his senses should se toy with his
plants as te have every tree and shrub out
into a sort of cauliflower bunch, is beyond
our comprehension. Yet it is no uncom
mon sight te see places of some acres in
extent, with hundreds of trees and shrubs
thereon all clipped and cut in a fashion,
which even the levers of the topiary art
would laugh at. with geed reason, be
cause utterly barren of any cxpiessien
whatever.
There is perhaps mere excuse for the
street-tree trimmer than these who have
the beautiful lawn specimens operated en.
There is the geed feeling that numberless
peer men want work in the winter, and
the cutting oil' of the heads of the sheet
trees keep them employed. And then our
desire te set out fast growing tiees that
will make shade quick, leads us te forget
that there are elten forest trees of the
largest size that seen grew tall te give
the shade desired, and then they are cut
low in enler te make them branch out
again. The idea is geed, perhaps, but it
docs net work. The tree grows faster than
ever and its last state is worse than the
first. Most people, who have been tempted
under this idea te cut back the tops of the
trees, have found when tee late that the
practice was an erroneous one, and
that the whole tree had te go. Such trim
med trees, whether of deciduous or
evergreen, arc very subject te injury from
extremes of frost and cold, and much meie
liabl-j te disease or the attacks of insects
than untrimnied trees. It is much better
te have trees of slower growth, which con
tinue low-headed te maturity, than te trillc
with trees in the backing way. At any
ratc we cannot see why lawn trees should
be cut as they arc ; and if anyone can give
any reason for the faith in this practice,
we should like te hear from them.

A hard-working fanner had been aillietcd
with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number el

restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread,
and as a beverage he Used McGrann's Reet

preached at tinus, and in ids discourses often
declaimed earnestly against all kinds of Htrenj;
drink. When advised te try
Reigart's Old Brandy,
In his case, lie looked up with astonishment,
but after hearing of its wonderful ellccls in
the cases of some of his near acjuaint:uiccs, he
at last consented te fellow our advice. He
used the Rrandy faithfully and steadily; the
tlrstbettle giving him an appetite, and before
the second was fatten he was a sound man. with
a stomach capable of digesting anything wnich
he chose te eat. Heidili keeps it and usesa lit
tle occasionally; and since he has this medi
cine he has heen of very little pecuniar bene
