THUBSDAY EVEN'G, MARCH 25, 1880.
1UHDIK BELL.
Softly sang a fair-halrcd niaidcn,
As the summer sun bunk low ;
lie will come again, my darling.
He will come again, I knew."
Sat the maiden, ripe and rosy,
On a streamlet's messy brink,
Where the gently-lowing cattle
Often came te get a drink.
In her hand an opened letter,
On her cheek a pearly tear,
And a little brindle heifer
Standing silent in the rear.
Pleasant dreams are always shortest,
Ever small are boyhood's pies
Winter comes ere autumn's ever.
Merry laughs precede our .sighs.
Tims the lovesick maiden found it,
hitting by the purling brook,
Tawed the earth that little heifer,
As her head she gently shook.
Suddenly a forward movement
Then the maid began te rise.
And a vista of striped stockings
Pas'-cd belere the heifer's eyes.
When the maiden's lever get there
Birdie Bell was in the creek,
But, thank Hvaven, was still uninjured
She had struck upon her cheek.
In the years that came thereafter,
When the maid and youth wcic wed,
Oft she told Iter child the story
Or the heifer that was red.

Inducements te Feresl-PIauUti
Germantown Telegraph.
If new inducements are needed for
forest-tree planting, surely the increasing
demand in all our large cities for Christmas-trees
ought te lead te the setting-out
of evergreen trees, in which the thinnings
would surely pay for interest en cost of
the whole plantation. In the case of oaks
and deciduous tices, we pointed out that
the demand for hoop-poles, and ether
matters in which the thinnings would
o.verv vear come in. would certainly make
.such plantations pay, and what
Christmas-trees, bean-poles and
lar requirements, the evergreen
tatien can be made te pay
as well. Anyone within hauling distance
of a railroad, and within one hundred te
two hundred miles of these great cities, se
that the trees could be leaded en te open
platform-cars, would thus make the thin
ninjrs of his plantation a profitable invest
ment. Net less than 200,000 of these trees
have been sold in Philadelphia this year at
from one te five dollars each, and the trees
evidently ranging from six te ten years
old. The most popular arc our native
black spruce, and the pitch or yellow pine.
But if plantations arc te be especially
made for timber, species could be selected
that would be mere valuable for timber
purposes, and which perhaps would grew
faster and be just as geed in their young
state for timber-trees. Of these there is
the white pine, the value of which timber
everyone Knows, aim proeaoiy tee iw
btriau pine, though we have no informa
tion as te the quantity of the timber
yielded by this tree in our country. The
Norway .spruce is a rapid grower, and in its
native country extremely popular indeed,
is the leading pine timber of Europe. It
is also one of the most popular with our
Christinas people. These trees may be
set out about four thousand te the acre,
and in five years every ether one cut out
would furnish trees that would retail
for Christmas uses at probably !$1 or $l.e0
each, and no doubt would net the raiser
twenty-live or fifty cents each,
or sE-eOO te $1000 sav $50 or $100 per a-j-
num, quite as much as could be yielded ' jy
ordinary farm-crops, with the same exj ,cn
diture of labor en the same class of 1 and.
It would net. of course, pay te go into such
enterprises en the dearer land liir xv the
cities. AVe are speaking of the c'neaper
lands, rear railroads, at some jistancc
away, and speaking in the interest 5 of tim
ber culture.
It has been ever and ever argued that
individuals cannot be expectc J te plant
timber, as it takes lia'f a lifeti me before it
comes into profit, and thcrefeve, as timber
is a necessity, governments si ieuld take it
into hand ; but it is evident, the 11101 e the
subject is studied, that thcrij are innumer
able ways in which a timber plantation,
intelligently cerducted, may be made te
pay its way as we go along.
