LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, THURSDAY, MARCH 25. 1880.
LAWi'ERS' CASUS.
Hew Callers are Fooled.
If any of our readers have occasion te
visit lawyers' offices when the occupants
arc net in, they have some idea of the un-
reliabilitv of the cards used bv many of
them te give callers an idea of where they
are. If you walk into an office early in
the morning, as likely as net the lawyer
is out and the card en the top of the
pile bears the words "Gene te Dinner."
Yeu leek again te sec that there is no mis
take and wondering where the man takes
meals, you start for another office te find
that the" lawyer "Will Be Back Soen, Take
a .Seat." The caller usually takes a scat
because there is nothing else in the room
worth taking. He sits as quiet as a clam
for an hour or mere and then begins te
think that the attorney lies. Te while
away the time he picks up a newspaper
which he finds te be several weeks
old, and, after leading all the
"ads," &c, which he would net read if
in any ether place, he takes his departure.
Upen going out of the deer he is informed
that the lawyer whom he was in search of
has gene out of town and will be back in
two days. A card which is often at the
t tp of the pile reads, " In the Coin t
Heuse." y that card the caller is lead te
believe that the lawyer is up te his ears
in business. He wends his way te the
court house, and after looking in the court
room, the library room, and all the offices
down stairs, he again starts te the office,
and meets the lawyer who had been for
lunch en the street. The latter then
swears that he has been looking all ever
town for him. If you go into an office
and find that the occupant is "At
the Barber Shep," the best thing you
can de is te go te the court room, where
you will find Mr. Attorney spread out en
a chair sound asleep, or, if awake, talking
politics. Men in search of lawyers never
have faith in the barber-shop cards, for
they believe that all lawyers shave them
selves as well as everybody else.
If lawyers want te let the public knew
where they are some of tlicni will have te
get a number of new cards printed, with
lilleient ideas en from the old ones. If
they take our advice, after procuring a
new set of cards, they will keep them ar
ranged and will always tell the truth (by
cards) leaving their point of destination
en the teji of the pile. This will save
clients and people who come around te
leaf for an hour or mere each day a great
leal of trouble and worriment. This
advice docs net apply te candidates for
district, attorney, who arc never in their
offices long enough te change their
cards. If they would change them a per
son having business with them would be
certain of finding ('.') them at the place
named en the card. Oh, yes.
Going tit Raise Tobacco.
The Pottstown correspondent of the
Norristown Register says : " Mr. Harry
Gardner, one of the most successful to
bacco growers of Lancaster county, has
just been visiting IVttlstewn with a view te
purchase in this vicinity a suitable piece of
land upon which te introduce tobacco
culture here. The Broek farm, the
Richards farm, the Stewo property, and
the large farm of Daniel Price ap
peared te offer the most inviting facilities,
and all were visited and taken under
con 'deratien. The Richard farm, known
as " irtewe," west of town, appears te Mr.
Gardner te be the best suited te his purpose
and it is likely a purchase of this property
will be made in a short time. Mr. Gard
ner is a young man of wealth and pleasing
manners. He and his father arc among tiie
most extensive tobacco growers of the to
bacco ceun'y, owning and controlling
three large farms. On seven acres,
said Mr. Gardner, that he attended te
personally, a crop was raised that sold
for twenty cents per pound, netting $000
per acre. The wife of Mr. Gardner is a
daughter of Hen. James Hepkins, of Lan
caster county, and several years age at
tended the Ladies' Cottage seminary here.
Her intimate relation with the family of
Mr. Charles llutter, created in Mrs. Gard
ner a desire te reside in Pottstown perma
nently, and it was this object that induced
her husband te visit the place for the pur
pose stated.

THE STRIKE AT SAFE HAR1JOR.
The Ringleader Discharged-
-The
Men
Again at Werk.
We have a lepert from Safe Harber that
several of the ringleaders of the strike at
the Safe Harber iron works were perma
nently dismissed yesterday after which the
general superintendent, Mr. Wright, had
a conference with the men and it was
agreed they should return te work at for
mer prices ($4.e0 per ten), and that they
should be furnished with pig iron of a
quality that would enable them
te make better wages. It appears they
were issuing English pig of short brittle
texture that would net roll well ; that it
often had te be taken back te the furnace
and heated a second time before it could
be properly rolled. Last evening the fires
were re-lighted and this morning the men
arc all at work, except these who were dis
charged. It is te be hoped no further
difficulty will occur at the mills, and that
they may be run te the mutual benefit of
the managers and the men.
New Ollices.
Dr. J. O. Boyd, whose recent return
from Flerida was noticed in these columns,
has settled himself down in his new offices
en West King street near Mulberry. The
rooms have been fitted up with new furni
ture, etc., and they leek very neat and
comfortable. R. J. Evans, esq., atterncy-at-law,
will occupy Dr. Boyd's late eflice
at Ne. 11 Seuth Queen street.
Meat Hurned.
Yesterday, while Franklin llamish, of
West Willow, was smoking meat in the
chimney corner of his house a ham fell
from a hook en which it was hanging into
the fire, and it was burned up together
-with all the rest of the meat.
NEIGHBORHOOD XEWS.
Notable Events Acress the County Line.
The West Chester papers have sung the
praises of their new turntable te such an
extent, that new the borough is filled with
tramps, who have journeyed thither te see
the wonderful work. This accounts for
the deserted condition of the Lancaster
lockup for some days p&st.
Along the Susquehanna river hang
pesters signed by eight pilots, who agree
net te take less than $20 for a raft and net
less than $10 for a half raft te run from
Peach Bettem te Pert Deposit. They
have adopted the firm name of Whitaker,
Moere & Ce., and all contracts and settle
ments for wages must be made with Mr.
Whitaker.
Hen. Jeremiah S. Black, Representative
Charles S. Wolfe and Franklin B. Gewen,
e-iq,, were in Harrisburg yesterday in con
sultation with the Harrisburg attorneys
engaged en the part of commonwealth, in
the bribery cases, for the purpose of mak
ing arrangements te oppose the granting of
pardons te Messrs. Kemble, Salter, Craw
ford, Rumbergcr and Petroff.
Jehn Sauerlandcr and wife, of Wilming
ton, were fearfully burned and their house
was set en fire by the explosion of a coal
oil lamp in their bed room as they were in
the act of retiring te bed Tuesday night.
The lire was extinguished and it is thought
that both the sufferers will recover. The
lamps was filled with "ocean oil," a
variety the sale of which is prohibited by
ordinance.
There arrived in Harrisburg yesterday
from the West a party of Apache Indians,
fierce looking, stalwart fellows, in blankets,
paint, feathers and brass ornaments,
regular types of the aborigines who
inhabit the Southwest. They were in
charge of Messrs. Alexander Reed and B.
M. Themas, Indian agents and interpreters
and left for Washington ever the Northern
Central, and Baltimore and Potomac reads,
at 4.25 p. m.
While a freight train drawn by a Medoc
engine, southward bound, was taking
water at Yerk Haven tank, south of Golds Gelds Golds
bero, the rear end of the train was run in
to by engine Ne. 74 (engineer Wilsen),
which caused a pretty bad wreck, damag
ing the engine and breaking up a number
of the cars with which the "74 " collided.
Wilsen and his fireman were both pretty
sevcrly hurt.
A convention of school superintendents,
including county, city and borough officers,
will be held in the Capitel building, at
Harrisburg, commencing at 2 o'clock p. m.
en Tuesday, April 27. and continuing
during Wednesday and Thursday. This
is the first meeting of the kind held dur
ing the current term of office, and it is ex
pected that every superintendent in the
state will be present and participate in the
proceedings. Various school matters will
be discussed.
On Monday the large stone anil frame
barn, en the farm of David Still, north of
Coatesville, in West Brandywine, was
burned with all its contents, which consis
ted of one cow, a number of chickens, all
the farm implements, besides some wagons,
a let of corn, eats, hay and straw. The
farm was tenanted by Isaac Tayler and the
origin of the lire was caused by a little boy,
son of Mr. Tayler playing with matches
in the barnyard.
Jacob Staull'er's funeral.
The funeral of Jacob Stauffer took place
this afternoon at 2 o'clock and was attend
ed by a very large concourse of relatives,
friends and citizens generally, among
whom weie many of the eldest and most
prominent of our people.
The friends assembled at the late resi
dence of deceased, Ne. 2:5.) East Orange
street, where a short formal service was
held, after which the body was taken te
the Picsbyterian church and the casket
containing it was placed at the head of the
centre aisle. The church was crowded.
The religious service was conducted by
Rev. .1. Y. Mitchell, the pastor, assisted by
Rev. J. J. Starh, Rev. J. II. Dubbs, D.D.,
and Rev. E. V. Gerhart, D D. After the
reading of a portion of the scripture
by Rev. Dr. Gerhart, the hymn "I
would net live alway" was sung by the
congregation. Rev. Mitchell followed
with a funeral oration in which he
paid a high tribute te the Christian char
acter of Mr. Stauffer. The hymn "Shall
We Meet Beyond 'the River," was sung by
the cher. The hymns above named were
favorites of the decased. and were sung
the last time that he attended church prier
te his last sickness.
At the end of the service the casket con
taining the remains was opened, and all
present had an opportunity of viewing the
body. The features looked calm and nat
ural. The body was clothed in a
black shroud, and was literally covered
with choice flowers, a fitting tribute te the
great botanist, a great portion of whose
life was spent among the flowers, the study
of which was one of his chief delights.
The funeral precession then formed and
moved te Lancaster cemetery where the
remains were interred,
Maunday Thursday.
In the religious calendar te-day is known
as Maunday Thursday or Hely Thursday
and in all the Catholic churches special
observance of the day was had in the cele
bration of the mass at 8 :"0 this morning.
Te-morrow will be Geed Friday com
memorative of the day en which our Sav
iour was crucified. The services in the
Catholic, Episcopal, Moravian and
Lutheran churches will partake of unusual
solemnity. The day is a legal holiday,
and the public schools and banks will be
closed.
A Celd Snap.
Yesterday was cold and windy, and the
mercury was below the freezing point all
day. This morning at daybreak the ther
mometer marked 17 degrees above zero,
and ice almost and inch in thickness
formed en st ill water. The policemen say
that last night was one of the most un
comfortable they have experienced during
the season. Seme fears arc expressed that
the early fruit may have been injured but
as the weather has been very dry, this is
net probably the case te any serious ex
tent. The I'cnu Mill.
Owing te the breaking of ene of the rolls
in the puddle mill, work has been sus
pended by the Penn iron company for the
remainder of the week except in the black
smith and spike and belt shops. And the
opportunity is being embraced te clean
boilers, make repairs, and te introduce
water chills into the puddling furnaces.

Taffy for Weaver.
Carlisle Volunteer, Dem.
We see it announced in the Republican
papers of Lancaster that our old friend
and classmate, Wm. D. Weaver, is a can
didate for district attorney. We have
known Mr. Weaver in and out of school
for many years and we have always found
him honest and upright, and it is our
opinion that if the "Bull Ringers" and
"Heg Ringers" of that delectable politi
cal clime want a geed, square fellow of
sound horse sense, plenty of brains
and some conscience te beet, they
will select Weaver. His Republicanism
is of the rankest kind but he has also re
deeming qualities about him, and as there
don't seem te be any earthly chance for the
election of McMullen, Given, "Beb" Risk
or some ether Democratic friend of ours te
the same office, .we hope Weaver will get it
We, however, hereby serve notice upon him
that should his party split itself up into a
half dozen Kilkenny cat factions and
thereby make it possible for a Democrat te
slip in, we shall, at once, take back every
solitary word of taffy we ever uttered about
him.
