It was once believed of Mrs. Winslow's seething syrup that "the children cried for it, " and the makers of oleomargarine would like te have the world believe that their sapid substance is in a geed repute as this with all generations. Oleomargar ine no doubt has its uses and its excel lences, and may in many circumstances be regarded as a well invented and acceptable substitute for butter. As such it is a legiti mate article of commerce. But it should stand en its own merits, strictly and severe ly. If it is better than butter it ought net te descend te pretend that it is butter, or be made the occasion for auy devices of dealers aimed te make the public believe that they are buying mere butter when in fact, according te the theory of the makers, they arc actually buying a superior sub stance. There has been much complaint en this score en cur own side the Atlantic, and we find by the foreign papers that Jehn Bull has his weather eye open en this point. Our merchants knew the readiness with which the English government seizes uiHMi anv plausible pretext for stepping or impeding the sale in England of Ameri can products. Unscrupulous dealers ship unhealthy cattle, and that fact is seized upon as reason for stepping at once an enormous trade in live beef. American perk has in the same wry f.und its mar ket some what reduced beyond the seas because of the sale of bad meat by men of little conscience. If the trade of Ameri can butter is even impeded or stepped by any Europeen country it will be en the theory that the trade in oleomargarine has shaken the confidence of foreign officials as te the actual nature of the contents of any package from America pretending te be butter. In view of such a possibility it may be thought by these most concerned that the picsent laws about the mark te be put upon oleomargarine are net se effective as they might be made. Peter, a Herse. "M. Quad," of the Detroit Free Frets, is doing Sew Yerk, and amongst ether thing he says : ' Yeu ask if we have any particularly bright horses," replied a hook and lad der man, " Here is Peter, he's been with us nine or ten years, and we rather brag en him. Let me introduce him. Peter, here is a ehan from the Detroit Free Press." Peter nodded his head and pawed the fleer. "Peter, have you been te a fire to day." He shook his head. " Were you out yesterday?" He nodded. " Peter, hew old are you?" The horse pawed thirteen times with his right loot. "That's right, old boy. De you re member when a loafer stabbed you at a lire ?" He did. "Where is the scar?" Peter bent himself almost double te bite his hip at a spot where a scar could be traced. " New. Peter, show the Detroit man hew you take your place at the pole." Down went the chain and the horse covered the distance at two jumps. "New walk around the truck and come and take my hat oft". The horse obeyed te the letter. "New," continued the fireman, as he lay down en the fleer, "step ever me." Peter lilted his feet very high and stepped softly ever, and returned te his stall. "That horse is one of us," said the man, as he brushed off the dust and sat down. "We can rest the feet of a ladder en his back and he will net move. Wher ever we stand him at a fire there he will stay without watching. lie cats with us, chews tobacco, likes beer and would learn te play dominoes in a week, if he could only handle them." Slayinaker, Agent for Reigart's Old Wine Stere, by a prominent practising physi cian et this county, who has extensively used the Brandy referred te In his regular practice. It is commended te the attention of theso af flicted with Indigestion and Dyspepsia. BRANDY AS A MEDICINE. This new much abused Alcoholic .Stimulant was never intended as a beverage, but te be used as a medicine of great potency in the cure of some of the destructive diieaes which sweep away their annual thousand of victims. With a purely philanthropic motive we pre sent te the favorable notice of invalids espe cially these alllieted with that miserable dis ease Dysjicpsia, a specific remedy, which is nothing mere or less than Brandy. The aged, witli tecble appetite and mere or less debility, will find this simple medicine, when used properly, A Sovereign Remedy or all their ills and aches. Be it, however strictly understood that we prescribe and use but one article, and tliat is; REIGAKT'S OLD BRANDY, Sold by our enterprising young friend, H.;E. SLAYJIAKER. This Brandy lias steed the test for years, and has never failed, as far as our experience extends, and we therefore give it the preference ever all ether Brandies, nomatterwithhewmanyjaw-breakingFrencii titles they are branded. One-fourth of the money that is yearly thrown away en various impotent dyspepsia specifics would sutlicc te buy' all the Brandy te cure any such case or cases. In proof et the curative powers et Reigart's Old Brandy, In cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon nuni here of witnesses one case In particular we cite: A hard-working larmer hail been alllieted with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ter a number of yean; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; he hail sour eructatiens con stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and us a beverage he used McUruun's Reet Beer. He is a Methodist, and then, as new, preached at times, anil in his discourses often declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advised te try Reigart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked up witli astonishment, but after hearing of its wonderful effects in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, lie at last consented te fellow our advice. He used the Brandy faithfully and steadily; the first bottle giving him an appetite, ani. before the second was taken he was a sound man.with a stomach capable of digesting anything which he eliese te eat. He still keeps it and uses a lit tle occasionally; and since lie has this medi cine he has been of very little pecuniary bene fit te the doctor. A l'UAcriaixa Phvsiciax. H. E.
