The species of English sparrows that were introduced some years age have he come se plentiful that the question has been seriously asked, what shall we de with them ? A writer in an exchange, who evi dently has given the matter some earnest thought, says : The sparrow is as geed, if net superior te any game bird that graces our table, in delicacy and sweetness of flesh. It is positively asserted that if pro pre erly prepared, it is a dish fit te set before the kins, a queen, or any ether American citizen. They are plump and (at, and the meat tender and juicy. They are very little trouble te prepare for the broiling iron, as the feathers are plucked out very easily. Parties out here, who have used the birds as feed, speak of them in such glowing terms that it would make the mouth of an epicure water te listen te them. And wliy should they net be geed and toothsome '! they feed en grain all through the winter mouths, and in summer they are found by dozens and hundreds in our grain fields and at our vines where hang the purple clus ters of the geed and wholesome grapes. They are a plague and nuisance te the farmer and fruit grower, and if they are geed for feed why net cat them ? Assault and liattery. About 2 o'clock this morning Stephen Brown, a colored man, accompanied by Win. Butler, also colored, called at Alder man Ban's office and made complaint of assault and battery against Wm. Jenes, a Middle street saloon keeper. Complainant alleged that Jenes ran at him when he en tered the saloeu and struck him in the breast with an oyster knife, cutting through his coat, vest and shirt and making a slight wound ever the heart. A warrant was issued for Jenes's arrest, but befere it was served that individual, ac companied by Wm. Butler, who appears te be "a mutual friend" of the parties, called at Alderman Barr's office and gave bail for a hearing. lie does net deny using the knife, but says he used it " in fun. " Hetel Change. The West Chester Republican of te-day says : Mr. A. B. Patterson has resumed the proprietorship of the Patterson house, in Iloncybreok, ind will take possession about April 1st. " The Banker's Daughter." Among the most brilliant drumutlc successes of recent record was that achieved last winter by the play en. titled "The Banker's Daughter." which was played te crowded houses at the Union Squat c theatre ler 140 consecutive nights. Its phe nomenal popularity took eveiy shape, from the copyrighting of its talismanic title for some new brand of cigars te the writing of a novel of the same name, and made up of the Incidents that comprise the all-absorbing drama. Patrick Hayes shot and killed his wife at nine o'clock this morning at their residence en Cellins street in the 31st ward. lie then shot himself twice in the head. Physi cians say he cannot recover. The wife died fifteen minutes after being shot. The sheeting occurred while she was washing and the cause is said te have been jealousy, Hayes being her second husband and a man of violent temper. His condition is critical and he says he shot his wife because she declared she in tended te get a man te sheet him. Mrs. Hayes leaves four children by her former husband. Hanged Himself. Allentown, Pa., March 23. William Schlicher committed suicide near Emaus last night by hanging himself in an out house. He leaves a wife and two children. Demestic and financial trouble was the cause. Beem Enough for All. Doylestown Democrat. The result of the meeting of the Demo cratic state committee at llarrisburg last week, is looked upon as a Tildcn defeat in this state, by some. We hardly regard it in that light, because no question of tbe kind was before the committee, It developed op position in this state te the rcnominatien of Mr. Tilden, without doubt, but beyond that it is net safe te go. There was one thing connected with that meeting we de net like, and that is the declaration by .the friends of Mr. Wallace, that the proceed ings were te defeat Mr. Randall. We de net believe Mr. Wallace himself se considers it. We are net aware tbese gen tlemen are running for anything or that either asked favors of the committee. Public men seldom have mere indiscreet friends than Messrs. Randall and Wallace. It has come te the pass, tbat there cannot be a Democratic meeting of any kind, unless the proceedings are heralded forth as a vic tory for Wallace or Randall. It is about time this thing was stepped aud the sen ator and the speaker should give their friends a word of caution.
