Seil, climate and fertilizers, bit her sepa rately or combined, have a wonderful 1U- ilucnee en the growth and development et the tobacco plant. The heil has mere te de with the texture of the leaf than any ether one thing. True, fertilizers have much te de with this important quality, but net te that extent that the soil has. In proof of this, compare New England seed leaf with that grown in Wisconsin, yet both Uhe an abundance of manure. It is theheil, Hither than the climate, that has produced se many varieties of the plant, however great the climate may have te de with the llaver of the leaf. The soil afl'ects .- , , -i.. .: 1.... .. ,v mere paiucuiawv uie j,iz.e, cuiui ui .--.-tuie et the leaf. The climate has only te de with the llaver of the leaf. The fertil izers applied te the feeil give cither a light or dark coleicd leaf, acceiding te kind u.-ed. and also in some measure affect the textuxe of leaf. In the tropics we find the rarest and finest flaveicd tobacco, used chiefly for ciuais. and yet in some poitiens of tropi cal and semi-tropical regions the leaf has no icinarkable flavor whatever, as is the c.i-e with St. Dominge tobacco. In Cuba the plant grows throughout the winter, the linc-t of which comes from the Yuelta Ab.ye district. The ether three or four districts produce some geed tobacco. In the ether islands of the West Indies, Perte llice. Mai unique and Jamaica quite a quantity of tobacco is grown, but net se oeda Cuba leaf, with the single excep tion of tli it grown en the Island of Mar tinique, where an old variety of tobacco i.-i. ii.-i.ii .'inVn for manv years, and is used by the Fi each for .snuit; the manu factured product taking the name of 3Iac 3Iac abey. , .Mexico also produces some line tobacco, similar in llaver te that grown in Cuba, lleuduias and Gautemala produce some geed cigar tobacco, but little attention, however is paid te its cultuie, and it is but little known in even foreign markets. That giewn in the latter state bears a white flower, as does also Persian tobacco. If we consider the tobacco of the East, that giew-n in Peisia and Tin key, we shall And thai it has a line aromatic or spice odor. Latakia tobacco, which comes iiem Syria, lias an aroma like the ashes of lese?, while .lava tobacco, when burning, has the aroma of peppers. Thus it will be seen that the climate 'ives flavor rather than size, texture en color of leaf. It may be said, However, mac Yarn tobacco grown in Cuba, is a very lai"e sei t of tobacco, and se it is if alti tude or height of the plant be considered rather than size of leaf. The writer tested this sort of tobacco a few years since, and some of the plants before topping reached the height of seven feet, and when topped it steed about live feet high ; but the leaves are no longer than these of Havana tobacco, but arc very close together en the stalk. If we shall examine the tobacco of France, Italy and ether tropical or scmi scmi trepical countries we-shall And that it is the llaver of the leaf that is its distinguish ing peculiarity, as it is with all tropical seits. When we come te the soil and its ;,,iin,.,.ne iirwiii the nlant we shall find that only the color, size and texture are allectcd. In this country almost every tobacco "rower can show the visitor leaves in the tobacco field ranging in length from 2 te :j feet long and with a breadth of from 14 te 20 inches. Se it is with the texture. The finest leaf we ever saw, net excepting even Periquc, was a few samples of Con necticut seed leaf as fine as silk and with veins like ordinary spool cotton. If one wishes te knew hew soil aflects the color of the leaf let him examine dark Kentucky leaf or Perique tobacco the latter seit owing its color in part no doubt te the curious mode or putting it up, after the manner adopted by Perique, au old Spanish navigator of St. James parish, Li who began te cultivate the plant tlieie in 1820. Helland tobacco also is dark, and if we examine the soil we fiud that it is dark. The soil of a geed portion of Lincaster county, Pa., is dark, and we l.iv.. r ibirk- cinnamon wrapper as the re- suit. . i. , The fertilizers, as we have written, also affect the color of the leaf. When light colored tobacco was in demand the grow ers of seed leaf tobacco in New England used lar"e quantities of horse manure, and thciebyebtaincd a light colored leaf of very fine texture, Use the ellal of swine and the planter need net expect ether than dark leaf, particularly se if the plants arc grown en dark soil. This is the long and short of the tobacco controversy. Tobacco Instead of Wheat. Rculin? Times and Dispatch. Lancaster county thirty years age raised the laigcst wheat crop of anv county in the republic. The change made in the agri agri cultuieef L-ncastcr by the cultivation of tobacco is rem..ikablc, but shows the facil ity with which our Pennsylvania fanners can become successful with any crop te which they serie.tsly turn their attention.
