Shocking I)eelepnients in the Donneily Denneily
AVushburn Contest.
Iii the DenneIy-"Vasliuum contested
election case for the Third iliutieseta dis
ttict, the raajeiity report of the sub-committee
finds in favor of unseating Wash
burn, Republican, and seating Dennelly.
It cites two hundred and ninety-one cases
of bribery en the part of Wash bum here
the money was paid by Washburn's cleiks,
his business manager, the secretary of his
political cemmitteCjOr his political agents ;
ever oue huudied cases aie traced duectly
te Washburn's office, the money in some
cases being paid in his piesence or in the
presence of his brother. Gov. C. C. Wash
bui n, of Wisconsin. In one case a Demo
cratic village postmaster wietc directly te
Washbui n, offering te sell his vote for $30.
Washburn, tlireusrli a fiiend answcicd the
letter, thanking him for his eiler and sent
a fiiend te him te pay the
money. In another case ninety wood weod woed
clioppeis, who wete net legal voter
weie paid $2 each te vote for Washburn,
and the money was paid by Wash
burn's business manager. In another case
a Democratic speaker who had been ad
vocating Dennelly was announced te make
a Democratic speech the night befeie elec
tion. He made a speech ler Washbuin,
and told the next day that he had ieeeied
$150 of Washbui n's money for doing se.
In the town of Cioekston theie weie only
eighty-five legal voters, but theie were 258
votes cast, the greater pait of these being
by non-resident railroad hands, who were
each paid for voting for Washbuin. A
Democratic newspaper at Little Falls was
bought te suppeit Washburn for $250. A
United States land officer at St. Cloud was
sent out by Washbuin te canvass for him.
He biibed a number of paitics, and admits
that he may have bribed one hundred.
Gieat numbers of labeiers employed in
building a railroad through the un
settled net th western part of the dts
tiict, where there were no coun
ty oiganizatieus, no pieciucts, and
no population, voted en box cars or depot
buildings, with cigar boxes for ballet
bees ; they weie n6t residents of that
county, but lived in beaidiug cais daily
moved fiem place te place. Eveiy one
who voted ler Washbuin v.v paid for
voting, and their votes weie all counted
for Washbuin. These biiberies extended
thieugh a legion el eeuntiy half as Luge
as thestatebf Xew Yeik, and they all la
diated horn the city of Minneapolis, wheie
Washbuin lived. In that city one man
was paid $50 for his vote and inllueucc :
another was piemised $32 and was paid
$3 ; another was paid $25 ; weikmen weie
brought in their employers' offices the
night befeie election and paid $5 tow eik
and v ete for Washburn ; another get an
oveiceat ; another a sack of flour ; saloon
kecpeis were paid $33 for voting their
beaider-s. Besides these there weie many
cases wheie the party was paid money te
vote for Washburn, but sweats that he
voted for Dennelly ; in many ether caes
money was elleied and declined.
In addition te this, the sub-committee
find that the workingmen of Minneapolis
weie intimidated by their employers, and
a gieat many of them cither forced te vote
for Washbuin or picvented from voting at
all. Although the canvass was a most
exciting one, and the Kepublieans polled
their full vote, nearly 3,000 Democrats
failed te vote in the city of Minneapolis.
The committee find that this was caused
by the fear of the weikingmeu that they
would lese their situations if they voted
for Dennelly. The Republican majority
lese fiem 355 for Hayes in 1870 te 3,080
for Washburn in 1878. As a pait of this
system of intimidation, the ballets weie
numbered in one-half the precincts of Min
neapolis, wheie the laborers hugely
lived, with a number corresponding "with
the number of the voter en the poll lists,
se that the employers might know knew
just hew their men voted. This
was done under a law which
had been dcclaicd unconstitutional by the
distiict ceuit, and afteiward by the su
pieme ceuit, and in the face of the advice
of the city attorney and attorney geneial
of the state net te number them, and
despite the advice even of the attorneys
w he had defended the law in the ceuits,
and also after the judges of election had in
public meeting leselvcd net te number
them. The numbering took place in seven
pieeincts, having twenty-one judges e
election ; by law fourteen of these should
have been fiicnds of Dennelly, as he was
the candidate of both the Democrats and
the Nationals, but out of the twenty-one
judges he had but one frieud. Twe of
these piecincts did uet return the vote for
congressman until eighteen days after the
election, and in one of these Washbuin
claimed 483 majority, while the tally sheets
kept by one of the cleiks showed he had
only 2G majority. The lepeit continues at
great length te expose the frauds by which
Washburn get in.
A Strange Bedfellow.
A Huge Wildcat That Had a Weakness ler
tlie Occupancy of a ltcd in a Utuh
Miuer's Cabin.
Salt Lake City Herald.
Apropos of the hunting and fishing, did
you ever hear of a wildcat taking posses
sion of a spare bed in an inhabited cabin.
Such a case really occurred this winter in
this vicinity, at the herd-house of Overhelt
& Creuse. A Mr. Burns had been left in
charge, and for several nights after he had
retired, was disturbed by a scrambling
noise in the chimney, followed by the sight
of two glaring, fiery eyeballs in the oppo
site bed ; and when he (Burns) moved or
made a noise the low, fierce growl of some
wild animal. This kind of thing occur
ring for several nights in succes
sion se discomposed Burns that he
finally vamoosed the ranche, and for some
time the intruder had things his own way.
With plenty of fat beef and venison in
store he must have come te the conclusion
that he had struck comfortable quarters.
Jehn Garrison, a miner, healing of the
circumstance, made his way te the herd
house, determined te interview the beast
that had taken posessien. When lie arrived
at the ranche, about four o'clock p. in., lie
was somewhat surprised te find the animal
in bed and disposed te fight for the Gar Gar
celenatcd establishment, but at sight
of the gun the miner carried he flew
up the chimney and into the brush.
Garrison hung around until dark, then
went te bed, placing his gun wheie
he could reach it and quietly waited for
Mr. Cat. About 10 o'clock he heard a
scrambling in the monstrous chimney,
followed by the sound of stealthy foot
steps across the fleer and the sight of
the flaming eyes peering out " at him
tiem the spare bed. Jehn carefully
raised his rifle, took as geed aim as he
could in the gloom and darkness at the
shinning erbi and fired. The report of
the rifle was followed by a sheit scream
of agony, then the sound of struggling in
the opposite bunk. The intrepid hunter
struck a light aud theie, sure enough, was
his cat, fully five fett in length, lying in
the bed, its life bleed slowly oozing
thieugh a bullet hole in its breast and be
dabbling with crimson stream the blankets
en w hich it had sought repose.

On Sunday mei ning last, February 15,
Dr. Wm. Frascr, of Xcw Glasgow, was
summoned in a case of midwifery at the
residence of Mr. Adam Murray, in the
settlement called Egypt, about four miles
from New Glasgow, en the Glenfallech
lead. Mr. Mini ay's family, at the
time of the doctor's anival, consisted
of seven children. Within an hour fiem
that time Mis. Muny piesented her
husband with live children, three girls and
two boys, all peicctly formed but veiy
miuiatuic specimens of humanity. Thiee
of the children were reported dead en the
evening of the first day, and en Monday
a fourth. A large number of people have
gene te see the most wonderful progeny.
On Monday the four dead ones were laid
side by side in a neat rosewood casket,
part of ascites of gifts from many of the
townspeople. The following is a state
ment of the lcspectivc lengths and weights
of the little cheiubs (we take the under
taker's figures as te dimension, as he has
assured us that he measmed with great
exactness :

Fourth 14 inches. 3ft 0 ounces

The last-mentioned, the smallest, a girl,
was the first-born of the quintuplex and is
the one that has survived. The dead
ones were te have been buried Wednesday
afternoon. On Tuesday Mr. J. 11. I'.
Frascr, photographer, took a number of
geed negatives of the childicn, living and
dead, and will shortly publish their pic

righted. The mother, who has doubtless
rendeied this province famous by an
event that has only one or two ceunterpai ts
in history, is a strong, healthy woman of
a little ever 30 years of age. She had
seventeen brothers and sisters, her mother
who is living, giving birth te eighteen
children, twins three times.
The father is an ordinary example of
physical development in fact, is below
the avciagc in stature and bodily piopor piepor pioper
tions. Persons who have seen the children
describe them as positively beautiful, the
dead ones mere resembling works of ait
in wax than natural-born members of our
race.
All the children are new dead, the last
