WEDNESDAY EVE'G, MAECH 17, 1880.
Monster Banquet.
Preparing te Entertain 1770 Railroad .Men.
The Cincinnati mind will be occupied
this week -'with the great Southern railroad
excursion and banquet. It is the means
adopted by the merchants and manufac
turers of Cincinnati of forming the ac
quaintance of the bussness men of the
region opened te trade by the new
Southern railroad. Delegations will
come from Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia
and Seuth Carolina. They will be
brought from Chattanooga in three long
trains and returned there, transportation
free. Arriving there this evening, they
will be driven te Music hall, where the
banquet will be .spread. The arrange
ments for this feast aic en a colossal hcalc.
Thirty tables en the fleer of the auditor
ium will seat 1,470 guests ; ten en the
stage, 240, and these, with the reporters'
and special tables, will make the
total number of plates set 1,770.
The contract for the banquet was
taken by Mr. Reth, of the St. 2s ichelas, at
$15,000. There will be 500 waiters, all col
ored men, dressed in uniform, with white
gloves and jackets. The tables will be s-ct
with 9,000 glasses, 3, GOO dessert plates,
5,400 dinner plates and ether articles in
proportion. The floral decorations will be
elaborate, one of the features being a loco
motive eight feet in length. The streets
traversed by the party from the depot te
the Music hall will be brilliantly illumin
ated, and an effort isbeing made te secure a
general illumination of the city. The ob
ject of the Cincinnati merchants is te im
press the visitors with the city's hospitality
and goerl will toward them and se lay the
foundation for future profitable busi
ness relations. The excursion par
ties wiil have neaily all their ex
penses paid 1'iem the time they
.start till they return te their homes.
Seme diuiculty has been experienced in
making a proper distribution of invita
tions, and complaints aic made fiem the
lower end of the line that lawyers and pol
iticians have sccuicd an undue share.
Tlueugh trains are running daily en the
new lead and making jroed schedule time.
