well prepared te perform their parts.
These soirees arc held several times during
the session by the young ladies of the school
for the benelit of tlicmsel vesanda fewinvited
friends and patrons of the school, and are
specially pleasing te such as enjoy geed
vocal and instrumental music.
The school will close next week for the
scholars te enjoy a couple of weeks vaca
tion. Much credit is due te the principal,
Mr. Hrickcusteiti and his associates for the
success and prosperity of the school.
St. Patrick's Day.
St. Patrick's day is noted as a day of
storms, but this morning the sun rose
bright and clear an event that has net
happened before within the past two
weeks. True, the sky was seen partially
overcast with clouds, and some little snow
fell, and new and then fitful gusts of wind
blew hither and thither, but taken as a
whole the day is thus far the pleasantcst
we have had for a fortnight ; and, as the
six weeks probation or hibernation of the
ground-hog has ended there is nothing
standing in the way of a season of pleas
unt weather except Mr. Venner's untoward
prophecies.
There has been no special celebration e
the day in Lancaster. The piously in
clined have of course gene te church in
kind remembrauce of Ireland's patron saint,
and net a few of hie admirers wear a sprig
of Preen iu their button-holes or en their
hats.
The most important event of the day
will be the oceultatienjof Mars by the moon
which will occur between 7 and 8 o'clock
this evening, and which will afford a very
interesting picture if the sky should be
clear. At G:41 Mars will disappear behind
the dark side of the moon ; this is callled
the time of immersion. At 8:34 he will
appear en the western edge of the moon ;
this is called the time of emersion. The
duration of the occupation' will be an hour
and sixteen minutes.
That is the Oiiestlen.
"Shall the next convention of the Penn
sylvania State Sabbath Scheel association
be held at Lancaster?"
A meeting was held in the Yeung Men's
Christian association yesterday evening te
consider ths matter.
On motion of Kev. C. Rcimensnyder,
II. C. Moeie was called te the chair, and he
stated the object of meeting. After a
free and full interchange of views en
the subject it was unanimously
resolved that all pastors and superintend
tsnts of Sunday-schools, with the several
delegates from their respective schools, be
earnestly invited te attend a meeting en
next Monday evening, 2ed inst., at 7J
o'clock in the. hall of the Yeung Men's
Christian association, when final action will
be taken in regard te the matter.
It is hoped that the wishes of churches
and Sunday-schools will be ascertained
and the delegates prepared -te report ac
cordingly at the next meeting.
All friends of the Sunday school cause
are earnestly invited te be present. Much
interest was manifested in the meeting last
evening, and the sentiment appeared te be
in favor of having the convention here.
SALISBURY ITEMS.
Frem Our Regular Correspondent.
On Saturday morning a family disturb
ance took place between Isaac Hauck and
wife, of Jit. Airy, which resulted rather
seriously for Mrs. Ileuck, she receiving a
cut en the head, from which she has been
suffering severely ever since. The physi
cian does net yet consider her out of dan
ger. It has caused considerable cxitement
in their immediate neighborhood.
Rain and mud seem te be the prevailing
elementt iu our section. Reads are in an
almost impassible condition.
The eye epidemic spoken of some time
age has net yet subsided. About one half
cf the young folks of the neighborhood are
affected with it.
The horse market in this section is very
geed. Horses arc selling for high prices ;
almost 59 per cent, higher than one year
age.

A DBUNKEN FIGHT.
Beth Combatants Badly Hurt Complaints
or Felonious Assault and Battery.
Yesterday afternoon about 5 o'clock a
desperate fight took place between Themas
Shields, alias Cassidy, and Jehn Lemen, at
Ziegler's tavern, en East King street, near
Middle. The men are "tramps" and
as nearly as we can ascertain the
facts they are as fellows : Shields and
his wife entered the tavern, and called
for beer, which they drank, and then sat
down by the stove. They get into conver
sation with Lemen, and after talking for
some time the men became noisy and began
a quarrel. Ziegler interferred and put
Lemen out of the room. In a short time
he came in again, made up with Shields,
and the two took a glass of ber together.
The quarrel was seen renewed, and Ziegler
then put both the men into the yard, say
ing he would have no quarreling in his
house. They again entered the bar-room
fighting, Lemen having a pocket knife in
his hand, with which he cut Shields across
the face and stabbed him two or three
times. Covered with bleed Shields made
his way te the station house, where his
wounds were dressed by Dr. J. A. Fitz
patrick. The doctor found that he was
cut en the left side of the head, a deep
gash extending from above and behind the
ear and below the angle of the jaw. lie
was also stabbed between the seventh and
eighth ribs, about an inch below the heart.
There was another stab just below the
shoulder-blade and still another about two
inches below. After Shields's wounds had
been dressed and the bleed washed from
his face and body, he was placed (in a very
exhausted condition ) in a cell in the lock
up. About 8 o'clock it was ascertained
that he had removed the bandage and tern
open the wound in his side, and rup
tured the intercestal artery and
that he was again weltering in his own
bleed. Dr. Fitzpatrick was again Killed,
checked the hemorrhage and gave Shields
the necessary attention.
Net long after the fight Lemen appeared
at Dr. Scnsenigs, East Orange street, with
his head and face pounded almost te a
jelly and the small bone of his forearm
broken near the wrist. The doctor sus
pecting that there had been a drunken
fight sent word te police head-quarters,
and Officer Leman was dispatched te
arrest Lemen. He was taken te the station
house, his arm was temporarily dressed,
and he was locked up.
When.arrcstcd both men declared they
did net toiew who hurt them ; and even
after close cress-questioning they seemed
very leth te " give each ether away."
This morning, however, Shields made
complaint against Lemen, charging him
with assault and battery with intent te
kill ; and then Lemen made a similar com
plaint against Shields. Alderman Mc
Conomy was sent for and went te the sta
tion house te take the complaints.
This morning both men were arraigned
before the mayor for drunken and disor
derly conduct. It was shown that they
had drank nothing at Ziegler's except two
glasses of beer, but that a bottle half-full
of whisky was found in possession of
Shields. The mayor committed both
Shields and Lemen for "0 days each, and
Shields's wife, Julia, for 20 days.

morning a number of ether diserderlies and
committed them te the county prison

ey Demscy for 10 days each.

POLITICAL DEBATE IN THE HOUSE.
Garfield and Barrows Attack the Democrats,
and are Answered by Mcaiahen and War
ner. Washington, March 17. In the Heuse
te-day Mr. Garfield (Ohie) criticised
severely the purpose of the Democratic
party te refuse te appropriate for special
deputy marshals, but appealed in conclusion
te the Democrats te prevent the disasters
which their party leaders were bringing
upon the country, and expressed his belief
that such a vote would be had en this bill
as would set at rest the peer dregs of
the extra session.
The discussion was continued by Mr.
Burrows, of Michigan, who declared his
conviction that the purpose of the Demo
cratic party was te steal the next presi
dency, te which Mr. Springer(IH.) retorted
by charging the Republican party with
stealing two or three states in the last
presidential election.
Mr. McMahon replied te Messrs. Gar
field & Burrows, and then Mr. Warner
(Ohie) took the fleer. At the conclusion
of Warner's speech general debate was
closed and the bill was read by sections.

Londen, March 19. At a meeting of the
Xatienal Land League, in Dublin, yester

was received, dated Des Moines, Iowa,
March 1st, in which he says : "The
general verdict of Americau opin
ions throughout the Union is over
whelmingly in favor of a radical
change in the Irish land system. We shall
leave behind us in America a permanent
organization in connection with the Land
League and prepared te support it financi
ally and morally te any extent we may re
quire, as such an awakening has come
upon our exiled countrymen here as is im
possible for theso who have net witnessed
it te imagine."

The Lancaster Surrender.
Philadelphia Times.
The Republican managers of Lancaster
have called a halt upon themselves in
obedience te a popular demand that had
get quite tee loud for comfort. The coun
ty committee met yesterday, and, finding
that it would smash many mere heads te
beinecked down that te sit down, there
wSentire unanimity in a formal recom
mendation for a popular vote en the presi
dency en the 22d of May ; en delegates te
the national convention, and en the next
United States senator. This is a liberal
concession of the ornamental part of poli
tics te the people; but what will be
the "dem total?" The Harris
burg convention has already elec
ted the delegates te Chicago and
they arc known te be for Grant if Senater
Cameren shall want them for Grant. It is
morally certain that the Republicans of
Lancaster will give an overwhelming
majority for Blaine, hardly less that four
or five te one, and it is in no degree doubt
ful that they will net ratify the delegates
already chosen for Lancaster te go te the
national convention. What then? The
Examiner tells the story of the practical
result when it sneers at allowing the
people te elect "curb-stone delegates te
Chicago."
This action may, however, present a
graver issue for the national convention
than is new anticipated. The election of
new delegates by a vote of two-thirds or
mere and popular instructinnsef a decided
character in favor of Blaine, coming from
the Republican Gibraltar of the interior,
will speak trumpet-tongued against
the attempt te force the nomination of
Grant by systematic defiance of the wishes
of the party. Unless a local candidate
shall be thrown into the senatorial contest
Mr. Grew will be likely te bear off
the senatorial laurels, whatever they
may be worth. Secretary Quay having
given notice that he isn't a candidate just
yet, he will escape the tempest that a few
desperate managers have prevked. The
position of the great mass of the Republi
cans of Lancaster is like the man who sold
his pipe of wine at a fabulous price en
credit. He never expected te get the
money, but he said that it looked well en
the books. The machine boys have get
away with the wine, and they are new
content that the party shall make the ac
count figure en the books te exhibit the
most magnificent profits.
