TUESDAY EVENING, MABCH 16, 1880.
The Czar'g Taunts.
A queer Btery is told of the Winter
Palace of the Czar, which may be given as
illustrating the great extent of the place,
and the possibilities of mischief it affords.
In the time of Nicholas, the father of the
present Czar, a number of sentries were
posted en the reef te guard against fire or
fees. Finding the climate up there net
altogether se comfortable as could be
wished, this permanent watch at length
contrived te convey en te the reef the ma
terials for a number of huts or cabins,
which in course of time they erected under
the shelter of the chimney stacks. Se
snug and cozy did they manage te make
themselves that it at length occurred te
the married men among them that, as
there was plenty of room up there, they
might as well enlarge their establishments.
Accordingly wives and families, one after
another, found their way out en te the
imperial leads. Several of the single mem
bers of the guard, finding such a tempting
opportunity of setting up housekeeping
economically, took wives te themselves,
and after a while quite a considerable
colony had sprung up.
Hew far the development might have
gene en if the individuals composing this
parasitic little village had been reasonably
cautious and careiul in their behavior it
is difficult te guess ; but the establishment
of families among the chimneys of the
palace led gradually te the accumulation
of domestic animals. Fowls multiply
amazingly, and goats Jbecome numerous
and flourish se well in the bracing atmos atmes
phere that at length it was suggested that
a cow might conveniently be added te the
farm stock. Hew the animal was elevated
we are net informed, but it is stated as a
fact that it was by some means heisted te
the reef, and was eventually the ruin of
the community. The lowing of the cow
came te certain official ears, and led te an
investigation and the total breaking up of
the queer society. Even at that time it is
said that the Russian emperor felt se little
confidence in his personal security that
nobody ever knew in which bedroom he
was going te sleep. A large number was
always kept ready and unoccupied, and at
bedtime the Czar would quietly slip into
one of them selected at the moment.
The Winter Palace is described as the
largest palace in the world, being one
third larger than that of the Emperor of
Austria, and unsurpassed in point of
snlcnder. It is the residence of the Czar
and his court during the winter, and
stands en the left bank of the Neva, en
the site of a house, which in the reign of
Peter the Great belonged te his high ad
miral, Count Apraxin, who bequeathed it
te Emperor Peter II. It was se com
pletely destroyed by fire in 1837 that it
was necessary te rebuild it, and one of the
net least remarkable facts connected with
it is that its present form was the work of
two short years.
Custinc gives a terrible description of
the rise of this monstrous citadel. In order
te complete the task at the time appointed
by the Czar, the interior works were con
tinued during the great frosts ; and when
the thermometer outside was 3P below
zero of Reaumur, G,000 workman were
da'ly shut up in halls heated te 30 of
Reaumur in order that the walls might dry
the quicker ; se that these peer wretches
had te endure a difference of G(P of tem
perature. Ne wonder a considerable num
ber of them died daily ; and it is said
that these who were engaged te paint the
interior of the most heated halls were
obliged te place en their heads a kind of
bonnet of ice in order te preserve use of
their senses under the burning tempera
ture. Glnlc.
