MONDAY .EVENING, MABCH 15, 1880.
COMFORT.
One autumn eve, before the mellow day
Had met the night and faded thence away.
While In the western sky there lingered still
Seft tints et purple, geld and daffodil.
And while the mountain peak was tipped with
light.
Once mere, ere sliartews stele it from my
sight.
I strolled In a sequestered burial ground ;
And en a crumbling tablet there I found
This quaint inscription, marking all alone
A little grave with weeds and grass o'ergrewn.
' ' Who plucked that flower? ' the angry gard
ener cried.
'The Master,' hastily his mate replied.
"Thereat the gardner paused and held hl9
peace."
All ! you, who from your sorrow seek release,
And you, whose hearts with grief arc crushed
te-day
Because your darling Ged has called away.
Arc net the angels whispering unto you
These simple words : " It was the Master,"
tee?

The most interesting celestial event this
week, one of comparatively rare occur
rence, will be the occultation of Mars by
the moon en Wednesday evening, just after
sunset. It is a curious fact that the first
occultation of a planet by the moon of
which any record exists was an occulta ecculta occulta
iiea of Mars. It occurred in the spring of
the year 357 before Christ, and is mention
ed by Aristotle in his book " De Ccolo."
The occultation en Wednesday will begin
at about 6:33 p. m., New Yerk time,
and will last about an hour and a
quarter. The planet will disappear be
hind the dark edge of the unilluminated
portion of the moon, and will reappear
from behind the bright edge, en the side
en which the sun shines. An ordinary
spyglass will give an interesting view of
the scene. These who possess astronomi
cal telescopes will be able te watch for
certain peculiar appearances that have
been recorded at some previeus oc ec oc
cultatiens, and which may have a
bearing en the question whether
the moon possesses any atmosphere. Twe
or three times observers have seen,
during occultatiens of Jupiter and
Saturn, a narrow band of shade en the
disk of the partially hidden planet, next te
the edge of the moon. At ether times the
planet's disk has seemed flattened or dis
torted. Mars is new se far away in his
orbit that the features of his surface will
net appear te advantage, but a powerful
telescope will, nevertheless, show the grad
ual disappearance of his continents and
oceans behind the moon's edge, and any
glass will exhibit the striking contrast be
tween the ruddy color of the planet and the
brilliant yellow light of our satellite.
