During the last week of December he left
Wilmington alone in his xessel, and with

below he was seized with a stiange sensa
tion. The beat trembled like an eatth
quake, and he could net stand en his feet.
Feat ing he had stiuck en bieakeis, he
crawled en all fonts te the deck, and
found his craft tossing about en a
chopped sea, as if she would beat her
self te pieces against the waves. Here
he remained all night. A storm blew
up and filled his cabin xvith water. At
daybreak he espied land, as he thinks,
Pigeon Point, en the coast of San Matee
county. Fei waul and back he diiftcd
past this point six miles, sometimes
nearer, again farther off. The tot fine of
Tantalus' craving for feed was as nothing
te tlie agony of this helpless madman in
sight of the land xvhich he could net reach.
Tlie strain was tee much for him. Fiem
the last time he remembers drifting past
this point all was oblivion te him until he
found himself one day in sight of Monterey,
and the xvind blowing him surely te that
place, which it was his geed fortune ulti
mately te icac'i. Upen inquiiy he found
that it was Febiuary 4, and that he had
been thiity-five days out te sea. Making
the necessary repair te his beat, he took
an assistant and started for San Francisce
with his his cargo of abalone shells, xvhich
he immediately disposed of te geed advan
tage upon his anival.
Uncle Johnny ut Church.
Wlicn geed Governer S., xvhe is a most
devout Episcopalian, was the chief magis
trate of Kentucky, he was xxent te fre
quently entertain the niembeis of the
General Assembly at the governor's man
sion. Te one of these levees came, xvith
the member fiem his county, an old moun
taineer who had just reached Frankfett
with a raft of legs which he had bi ought
dexvn the Kentucky ri-er.
The old man, w he xvas called familiatly
" Uncle Johnny,"' seen became the centre
of an admiiing gieup, te xvhem his jean
clothes xvere net at all an improper attire
for the governor's levee ; and his tongue
being loosed by a glass of short y xvine
which he then tasted for the fust time in
his life he was entertaining his auditeis
with steiics from "his county," when the
governor approached.
" Uncle Johnny, here is the governor, "
said one of the company ; and straightway
the old man was silent, for he was over
whelmed by this first vision of the majesty
of the commonwealth.
"Ge en with your story, Uncle Johnny,"
said some one ; " the governor will like te
hear it. "
"Yes, go en, Uncle Johnny, " said the
governor, with a kindly sraile of encour
agement; and the old man, thus convinced
that even the governor was also a man,
concluded his liairativc.
Then, becoming bolder, he ventured te
address the governor, saying :
"Guvner, I went te your meeting yistidy,
and I seen whar you, sets."
He had been te she Episcopal church,
and had been shown te the governor's
pew.
" Did you, Uncle Johnny?" responded
Governer S. " And hew did you like it ?"
' Well, Guvner, 1 never knewed much
what they xvas a-dein,' but I riz and ftll
irith em every tune."
Valley Ferge.
Valley Ferge is a manufactuiing place,
and there is a constant hum of machinery
fi em the paper, Heur and woolen mills.
The neat little houses of the factory hands
ate gay xvith flowers and vines, xvhile the
handsome residence of the mill owners
tower castle-like above them. Past all
these dwellings, at the end of the street
stands the old-fashioned stone edifice hal
lowed by Washington's piesencc.
It is a plain, somewhat contracted-looking
house, this Valley Fei go shrine, after
the usual type of ancient Pennsylvania
homesteads, with a queer reef ever the
deer, xvitheut either pests or pillais,
shaped like the sounding-beards in old
time churches. The small-paned windows
ate long, and end in low, deep window-
seats that could be sat in xvith ease but
they ate net cushioned, or made the most
of in any way. The entrance doei ejiens in
halves, and two bread flat stones lead te it.
Nothing has been changed in the old
house since Washington lett it, with the
exception of paper and paint ; but it sti ikes
the x isiter as decidedly bare-looking, and
by no means attractive as a place of resi
dence. The admission fee of ten cents is
apprepi iated by the Centennial committee
ler the furnishing fund, their intention
being te furnish the back room en the
gi ound-lleor, known as Washington's pt i
xate ellice, with aitielcs gathered here and
there of the date of Washington's resi
dence, and as neatly as possible a fac
simile et these in use at the period, the
eiiginal furniture having slipped away
down the back staits of time without
leaving a trace be1 hid.
As v et, however, nothing has been ac
complished, and very little of interest is te
be seen in the way of relies. The back
100:11 is the chief point of interest ; and
one el the deep window -seats is a box, the
lid of which is labeled, "Washington's
ptivatc papets, 1777," this receptacle
having piebably been made te avoid sur
prises. Wc are also shown a Revolutionary can
non ball, the old anvil used in shoeing the
hoi scs of Washington and his troops, and
an ancient lire-place xvith "backs and
jambs." The iron back of another fire
place is unexpectedly displayed outside of
an entrance deer which opens into a nar nar
tew passage. This back, of German man
ufactuie, is quite a weik of ait, and evi
dently intended as a representation of the 1
inuaele in Cana el Galilee, the queer
figures and water jais being supplemented
by a Get man insciiptien, in which the
vveids "Wasser" and "Weill" aie
quite distinct, also the reference te Jehn,
11. 1-1 1.
The most noticeable aiticle of furniture
in the room is an " old clock en the stair"
which seems its legitimate place. It was
net used, however, by raslnngten,having
been impei ted fiem England by the grand
father e! the pte.-cnt venerable occupant in
1784.
The old Potts mansion has been pur
chased by the Centennial and Memerial
association, aud in the deed of ti list the
gteiind belonging te it is carefully esti
mated at two acres and eight peiches. The
long, low stone bain that stretches aciess
a I.11 go poitien of one side is rough and,
plain the same in appeal ance as when
Washington stabled his heises there. Ait 1

The Senate and lleusc of Representa
tives, taken together, contain sixty-tlnee ,

hobble about, sonic without arms and some
without a leg, cut, maimed and scan ed

In the Senate are the ten feimer Cen
federate generals Wade Hampton, But
ler, Meigan. Geiden, Williams, Jenes,
Gibsen, Ransom, Vance anil Maxey
against the two Union Icadcis. Burnside
and Legan. Burnside and Hampton seem
new rivals in a contest of military and
Empcier William xvhiskers. Facially,
Butnsiileis the nearest approach te an
Empeier William en this side of the At
lantic. Senater Geiden is in appearance
as imposing a man as the Seuth ever
raised, and bears no traces of the eight
wounds leceived in battle. Legan's is a
prominent head from its glossy black hair
and mustache. David Qavis, his colleague,
of Illinois, vaguely suggests Bess Tweed.
Edmunds, of Vermont, leeks the last of a
long line of New England deacons, slight
ly modified by the fashion of
the age. Hannibal Hamlin retains
day and night the swallow-tailed coat of
his ieiefaithcrs. Kcinan, of New Yerk,
leeks the old school senator of feity ycais
age. Likewise Lamar, who has a Henry
Clay type of countenance. Conkling's
hair is quite gray, or a cress between a
gray and white a sort of office gray, but
net a silver gray. Conkling walks with
a slight "jury droop." His legs seemed
imbued with au individuality of their own,
and impress one with a sense of intellec
tual mechanical power. In the Heuse,
Gen. Jee Johnsten commands a pre
mium for imposing silvery locks. His
hair if his is the head pointed
out te me w euld bring at the hair mer
chant's $G0 per ounce. Gen. Tem Ew ing,
of Ohie, is massive physically, and a " do de
liberate" man in manner. S. S. Cox isn't.
Bliss, of Bioeklyn. is one of the hand
somest men in the Heuse, and possessed of
much quiet influence. Cevert, from Flush
ing, is a youthful, geed-looking member,
and full of refinement, delicacy, geed
sense, practicality aud executive ability.
Speaker Randall has a professerlike air,
and ewes millions te a geed wife. As a
whole, both Senate and Heuse arc extern
ally a very respectable-appearing body of
men. Ihey convey a sense et regulat
