Raising Potatoes Under Straw.
Occasionally some farmer has great suc
cess in producing potatoes by dropping the
seed en green sward and covering it with
refuse straw, old hay, or ether sorts of lit
ter. "When this is the case he generally
informs the public of his method of culti
vating potatoes and for a time it becomes
fashionable. Farmers who are net suc
cessful in this method of raising potatoes
de net say anything about it, and as a con
sequence the public are in ignerance in
relation te the ratio that exists between
failures and successes. It is obvious that
raising potatoes under straw or ether lit
ter can never become general for the rea
son that sufficient material can net ordi
narily be ebtaiucd for covering the seed.
Still most farmers can raise a small patch
in this way te excellent advantage.
The best results are obtained by cutting
the potatoes in pieces of suitable size,
dropping them en a sod after the grass is
a few inches high and covering them te the
thickness of six inches with refuse hay,
straw or ether rubbish. The addition of
well retted manure, ashes and fine soil is
an advantage. The rain will carry them
down te the roots of the potatoes. It is
net necessary te drop the potatoes in rows.
The pieces may be placed within a feet of
each ether, as no cultivation is required.
A little earth thrown ever the straw covci cevci
ing will keep it in place and preserve the
moisture in it. Almest all the labor re
quired te raise potatoes in this way con
sists in handling the material employed in
covering the seed. The turf seen decays
and adenis sustenance for the growing pe
tatecs. The potatoes are very easily har
vested in the fall and come out of the straw
almost as clean as if they had been washed.
Anether object may be accomplished by
planting potatoes en top of the ground. A
haihh, tough sod may be subdued and
brought into a condition te produce geed
crops another year. A valuable modification
of the plan of covering seed potatoes with
straw consists in -opening a furrow with a
plow, throwing in old hay, straw, forest
leaves, or sawdust, then dropping the
potatoes, and finally covering them with
earth. The materials thrown in the fur
row arc favorable te the formation and
growth of the bulbs. When mature they
are quite clean, and may be dug without
bruises or cuts. A mulch is of great ad
vantage in raising potatoes. It helps re
tain moisture and prevents the young
and growing tubers from becoming tee
warm during the het weather in July and
August. A moderate cool temperature
and moisture are essential te the produc
tion of geed potatoes.
Collecting a Ticket with a Ladder.

Frederick Bliss in one of the diminutive
but popular conductors en the Reck
Wand, between Council Bluffs and Des
Meine. As a passenger train was nearing
Des Moines a few days age. Conductor
Bliss proceeded te take up his checks. As
he entered the second coach, a gentlemen
who was sitting near the rear rose up, and
when fu'Iy straightened out appeared
te be about seven feet high.
He walked leisurely toward the
busy and genial conductor. When
the two met. Bliss reached up for the pas
senger's check, but, te his astonishment,
he failed te reach far enough. lie then
attempted the jumping grab game. After
-eme half-dozen attempts he gave that plan
up and went forward into the baggage car.
;-ecured a step-ladder and very seen re
turned, finding the tall passenger await
ing him. The ladder was placed in posi
tion and was quickly mounted by the man
of tickets, who procured his check, much te
the amusement of the passengers.
A Moving Appeal.
Once upon a time tlie mule, without
having received an invitation, attended a
convention of animals that was called for
the purpose of discussing the best methods
of family government. ' What de you
knew about all of this?"' asked the
president, tauntingly; "have you ever
raised any children?" The mule wept.
"Ah no, " he said. "I have never raised
anything but full-grown men ; but land of
the pilgrim ! you should see hew I raised
them you should see me raise a man that
weighs as much as David Davis. " Upen
a rising vote the mule was immediately
elected financial secretary, with power te
send for persons and papers. Burlington
