Allusieu lias been made frequently of
late in this journal te various schemes un
dertaken in different parts of the country
for the cultivation of the .suar heet and
the manufacture of beet sugar. Hut the
matter has received comparatively little
attention from the press generally ; iUUl
outside of a narrow circle of thoughtful
persons no great amount of interest in the
matter has been manifested by the public.
But we venture te make the assertion that
this indifference will net long endure ; that
it will give way, before many years elapse,
te full appreciation of the fact that the
experiments of beet-culture in Delaware,
Maryland, and ether States, arc the lirst
steps in a movement of the highest im
portance, which will at a net far distant
day revolutionize the sugar business.
There are two great facts connected with
this subject which ought deeply te impress
the mind of every American. One is that
we nav nearly one hundred millions of
dollars every year te foreigners for sugar :
for wc impeit mere of that article than of
any ether one thing. The ether is what
we" have the capacity te raise at home
enough sugar of the best quality te supply
net only our own demand, but that of the
whole civilized world.
As for the former fact, there can be no
doubt at all that any device that will oper
ate fairly te keep in the country the money
that is .spent abroad will be of very huge
advantage te the nation. It will give te
our own people, te expend at home for the
enrichment of ether Americans, the whole
of the profit which new gees into the pock
ets of foreign planters and laborers. It will
increase that diversity of industry which is
an essential of the prosperity of every
country ; giving new form of employ
ment te the population, and helping
te use up whatever of surplus labor
may be going te waste among us. It will
be very prolitablete farmers, and especially
te Kastern farmers, by giving the soil re
lief, by increasing the possibility of rota
tion of crops, and by enabling theae who
find little profit in cultivating the cereals
te devote their attention te ether products.
It is net diflicult te believe that we may
be approaching the time when, with the
"Western .states mere cleely populated, wc
shall grew grain in such quantities that
it can hardly be disposed of. First
rate harvest all ever Europe, with a geed
harvest at home, might produce such an
unnlcasant complication at any time : and
even under ordinary circumstances

pressed by the competition of the huge
larms of the far West, operated by large
capital, improved machinery and reckless i

almost like idiocy for such a state of thmgs i

The possibility of growing beet sugar
here under prelitable conditions can no

odd circumstance that the enlightened, en
ergetic and cntci prising farmers of the
United States should have been se long
and se far surpassed by men of the same
class in the old world. AVe cannot doubt
that they will eagerly embrace the oppoi eppoi oppei
tunity te engage in the industry se seen as
proof shall be given, by the huge succes
of a single one of the sugar factories ic
cently started in this country, of the fact
that there is a chance- for making money in
the business.
