THE OLD OAK feNBUCKET.
AS REVISED AND EDITED BY A "SANITARIAN."
With what anguish of mind I remember my
childhood,
Hecalled In the light of a knowledge since
gained;
The malarieus farm ; the wet, fungus-grown
wild weed;
The chills then contracted that since liave re
mained: The scum-covered duck-pond; the pig sty close
by it;
The ditch where the seursmelllng house-drainage
fell ;
The damp, shaded dwelling; the foul barn
yard nigh it
Hut worse than all else was that terrible well,
And the old oaken bucket, the meld crusted
bucket,
The mess covered bucket, that hung in the
well.
J ust thik of it ! Mess en the vessel that lifted
The water I drank in the days called te mind
Ere I knew what professors and scientists
gifted
In the water of wells by analysis find.
The rotten weed fibre, the. oxide of iron.
The alga;, the frogs of unusual size,
The water impure as the verses of Byren
Arc the things I remember with tears in my
eyes.
And te tell the sad truth though I shudder te
think it
I considered the water uncommonly clear.
And often at neon, when I went te drink it,
1 enjoyed it as much as I new enjoy beer.
Hew ardent I seized it witli hands that were
grimy,
And quick te the mud covered bottom it fell ;
Then seen, with its nitrates, and nitrites, and
slimy
With matter organic, it rose from the well.
Oh ! had I but realized in time te nveid them,
The dangers that lurked in that pestilent
draught,
I'd have tested for organic germs, and destroy
ed them
With petussic permanganate ere 1 had quaffed '
Or, perchance, I'd have boiled it, and after
wards strained it
Through fllters'ef charcoal and gravel com"
blned ;
Or, alter distilling, condensed and regained it
In potable form, with its filth lelt behind.
Hew little I knew of the dread typhoid fever
Which lurked In the water I ventured te
drink ;
But since I've become a devoted believer
In the teachings of science, I shudder te think.
An 1 new. far removed lrem the scenes I'm de
scribing, The story ler warning te ethers I tell,
As memory reverts te my youthful imbibing,
And I gag at the thought of that horrible well,
And the old oaken bucket, the fungus-grown
bucket
In fact, the slop-bucket that hung in the well

Wit and Wisdom.
Fresh Gleanings Frem the Fruitful liar
vest of American Humer.
" It's knotty but it's gneiss, " said the
old quarryman when he struck his drill
into a rock of crooked strata.
It has been asked by 400,001 people :
" Why is a ship spoken efas 'she ?' " Be
cause it wears stays.
Summer-time will ceine again,
With its seltly blowing zephyrs.
Lewing kine are In the fields ;
Seme are cows and some are heifers.
Demestic bliss kissing the pretty visi
tor. Demestic blister when your wife
catches you in the act.
"Why de they call Shakspeare's plays
"works?" Isn't there any difference be
tween work and play ?
A chap who pretends te knew about
gardening says the best way te raise straw
berries is with a spoon.
Up te the present time Blaine has had
all the " boom," but Grant has the dele
gates. This can hardly be called a fair di
vision. The Chicago Mies says "there is mere
than a possibility thtt the Democratic can
didate for president will be d d. (David
Davis)."
The Latin term for cod-liver oil is
" Oleum jeceris asseli." A doctor pre
scribed it for an old lady the ether day,
and, as usual in his prescription, abbrevi
ated the terms, which read: "R. 'Ole.
.Tec. Ass.' oz. ill." A friend of the old
lady congratulated her upon her restora
tion te health, when she said: "Yes, it
was that beautiful medicine, the oil of
jackass that brought me en my feet
again." Chicago Inter-Ocean.

Hep Bitters, which are advertised in our
columns, are a sure cure for ague, biliousness
and kidney complaints. These who use them
say they cannot be tee highly recommended,
These afflicted should give them a fair trial,
and will become thereby enthusiastic in the
praise of their curative qualities. Portland
