SATUBDAY EVENING, MARCH 6, 1880. WASHINGTON. The following epitome of the life and charac ter of Washington was written by Jehn B. Smith, esq., a well-known 1'hiladelphlan et " former days, and is handed te us by Mr. Clias Bitner, of this city, who has had it some eighteen or twenty years. It is a comprehen sive and an eloquent description of the char acter and career et the "Father of his Coun. try," and is worthy te be inscribed en his monument at the capital, if the gratitude et his countrymen ever proves equal te its com pletion : WASHINGTON, The Defender of his Country ; The Founder of Liberty ; The Friend of Man. History and Tradition are explored in vain Fer a parallel te his character : In the annals of modern Greatness He stands alone; And the noblest names of Antiquity Lese their lustre in his presence. Bern the Benetacter of Mankind, He was signally endowed with all the qualities Appropriate te his illustrious career. Nature made him Great, And, Heaven-directed, He made Himself Virtuous. Called by his Country te the Defence et her SeU, And the vindication of her Liberties. He led te the Field Her Patriot Armies ; And, displaying in rapid and brilliant micccs- sien. The United Powers Ot Consummate Prudence And Heroic Valer, He triumphed in arms Over the most Powerful Natien Of modern Kurepe: His Sword giving Freedom te America His counsels breathing Peace te the World. After a short repe-c Frem the tumultuous Vicissitudes Ot a sanguinary War, Tlie commanding energies of Washington Were again destined Te a new career of Glory and Uwlulne-s, The Civic Wreath Was spontaneously placed, By the Gratitude of the Natien, On the Brews of the Deliverer of his Country ; He was t ice successively invested With the powers or Supreme Magistracy By the unanimous voice of a Free People And in this exalted anil arduous station, The Wisdom of his Cabinet Transcended the Glories of the Field. The Destinies et Wasiiinoiej. Were new completed. Having parsed the Meridian of a Devoted Lite" Having founded, en the Pillars Of National Independence, The splendid Fabric Of a Great Republic; And, having firmly established The Empire et the West, He -eUninly deposited, en the Altar of liis Country, His Laurels and hit .sword. And retired te the shades Of Private Life. A spectacle se new and se sublime Was contemplated by Mankind With the profoundest admiration And the name of Washimite.n. Adding new Lustre te Humanity, Kexeuiided te the Keinetcst Regions el the Eaith. Magnanimous in Youth; Glorious through Life ; Great in Death; His highe-t ambition the Happinesi el Man kind ; His noblest Victory The conquest of Hiuwelf: Bequeathing te America the Inheritance el hi Fame, And building his Monument "In the hearts of hN'Ceuntrynieii;" Heine.! The Ornament of the Eighteenth Century He died Lamented by a Mourning Weild. An Old Play Bill. Charlette Cuslnuan as a Soubrette iu 187 J. XV. Ferney as a Jeb Printer. It will be observed that the date is merely June 30, with no year given. Doubtless Mr. Cenner, who long age re tired from the stage, but is new living in Paterson, New Jersey, can furnish the missing link. It will be seen that two Bostonians, Charlette Cushman and her sister Susan, arc both mentioned in the bill and that the former is set down for a soubrette part. For Fer ney, in the J'regrc, and I remember the occasion as if it were yestciday. It was in 1837, and I distinctly recall that one night, just before the time for the curtain te go up, it was discovered the lamps, which had been properly filled, were empty. We had no gas in these days, and somebody had stolen the oil. Charlette had a tem per of her own, and it took all the persua sion of Cenner and the beautiful. Susan te pacify her when she found there was dan ger of delay. However, they get mere oil, lighted up the dingy old house, and the performance went en. Cenner is still a familiar about Philadel phia, and his benefit at the Walnut Street theatre, Thursday afternoon, October 23, 1871), is tee recent te have been fei gotten.
