their net income. It appears that many
of them have allowed salaries te all the
partners in the bank business, and in that
way absorbed all the profits, se that there
was nothing left for the commonwealth.
The department holds that no division of
the profits can be made among the mem
bers of the firm until after the payment of
the proper taxes te the commonwealth.
Rent, fuel, clerk hire, and taxes, are
proper items te be deducted from the gross
receipts, but net dividends of the profits
earned until after the payment of the
taxes.
A DESTITUTE FAMILY.
Death or the Father Yesterday.
Yesterday afternoon Isaac Bewdcr, who
resided at 554 Lafayette street, died of in
flammation of the bowels. He leaves be
hind him a family of a wife and eight chil
dren, six of whom are at home ; the young
est being but three weeks of age. They
are in very destitute circumstances and arc
deserving' of aid. Yesterday, after the
death of the father, some persons went te
the house and they then ascertained hew
peer me lamuy really was. mere was
scarcely anthing in the house te eat and
but a small bucket of coal. The
mother was ill and the children were very
poorly clad. These folks at once set
themselves te work te collect .something
for the relief of the family and
se far they have met with suc
cess. Feed and fuel have been sent
te the house, but some money is needed
te defray the expenses of the funeral,
which will take place from the residence of
Jacob Weaver, en Seuth Duke street,
whose wife is a sister of the deceased.
Any money left at the mayor's office or at
the leather store of A. A. Myers & Ce., en
West King street, will be sent te the fam
ily. Clothing, previsions, &c, can be left
with Mrs. Henry Gast, residing en Maner
street.
The deceased was an industrious, hard
working man, and was by trade a net
maker, ne took sick about two weeks
aq;e and his family therefore liad no one
te depend upon.

about erecting a commodious stable en the
parsonage let for the use of the pastor.
Employees of the Heading iron works
have been notified that their wages have
been increased 10 per cent., the advance
te date from the 1st of March.
Rev. J. A. Feger, of Harrisburg, has
been appointed te the Mulberry street
charge of the Evangelical association, of
this citj'.
E. K. Martin, esq., of Lancaster, was te
delivci a lecture in the Pequea Baptist
church, en Saturday evening, 28th inst.,
but owning te the storm and muddy reads
it was postponed till a future period.
Smcdlcy& Marsh, of Oak Hill, Lancas
ter county, who go te Wakefield store, will
be succeeded in business at Oak Hill by
Themas Jenkins and William Patten
under the firm name of Jenkins & Patten.
The latter will also continue in business at
Ashville.
Prof. David Leng of Mechaniesburg.
Citmbcilaml county, has brought suit
against Prof. Gleasen for libel and con
spiracy te injure his reputation as a horse
trainer ; and against twenty-six ethers for
conspiracy. It is thought that when these
gentlemen visit Carlisle te attend court,
they will go en horseback, with Professer
Gleasen at their head, forming a novel
cavalcade.
Washington Borough Items.
Abraham Allisen died last evening, aged
23, aud will be buried en Saturday at
10 a. m., from the residence of his father ;
services at the M. E. church.
The river is falling and rafting has sus
pended until the next freshet, when a geed
run' of timber is expected.
Shad flies have put is an appearance and
their early coming is a sign of an abund
ance of shad.
The country reads through the Mauei s
are improving, and if no serious freeze oc
curs will seen be geed.
Twenty persons were baptized and the
holy comuuien of the Lord's Supper ad
ministered in the M. E. church en Tues
day evening, Itev. Henry Wheeler, of Col
umbia, officiating.
Paying Pensions.
Te-day Aldermen Wiley is engaged in
paying pension claims te these entitled te
then). Among the pensioners who called,
was Mrs. Rebecca Cameren, widow of the
late Cel. James Cameren, who was killed
at the first battle of Bull Run. Her pen
sion was granted nearly 18 years age, aud
since that time she has called regularly
four times a year for the money Te show
the immense proportion te which the pen
sion list has swelled it may be stated that
Mrs. Cameren's pension was granted Sept.
23, 1802 and is numbered 13. while ether
pension papers in Alderman Wiley's
possession are numbered 58,000 and up
wards. The Flitting Season.
The cumbersome " moving " wagons,
with their heavy freight of household
goods will ere long be seen and heard
rumbling through our streets, and the near
approach of the " flitting " season was
evidenced by the sight of several of these
u nweildy vehicles slowly making their way
through town yesterday and te-day.
Charles Denues, esq., of Millersville, to
day moved into the late residence of 3Ir.
L. B. Herr. en West Orange street beyond
Mary, and the last-named gentleman has
changed his abode te one of the row of
houses en the west side of Lime street, be
tween Orange and Chestnut.
Police Cases.
Jehn Meran, an old offender, was before
the mayor this morning en the charge of
being drunk and disorderly. He was com
mitted the county jail for 60 days.
A gang of colored bootblacks were
arrested by Officer Swenk, for fighting
and ether disorderly conduct in front of
the court house. Alderman Barr repri
manded and discharged them.
Lucky.
Charles H. Zaepfel, wen the geld hunt
ing case Waltham watch at the ladies' fa'r
for the benefit of St. Jehn's German Re
formed church, corner Mulberry and
Orange streets. It is a very beautiful and
excellent time-piece. The lucky number
was 21, and it was purchased en the 21st
of the month.
Painful Accident.
This morning Master Arthur Knight, a
twelve-year-old son of Rev. C. F. Knight,
had his wrist dislocated and one of the
bones fractured, by a fall while he was en
gaged at play with a companion at the res
idence el Geerge Calder, jr. The disloca
tion was reduced by Dr. J. L. Atlee.
RETURNED TO JAIL.
Arrest of an Escaped Prisoner.
Yesterday Detective Sprecher went te
Lebanon with a warrant for Adam Rifer
alias Steiner, who was arrested in Lebanon
last Friday in company with a party of
tramps, te whom he acknowledged that he
had been convicted and sentenced for bur
glary and robbery at Reinhold's station in
1877, and escaped from Lancaster jail in
company with Frank Miller, in December
1878. These facts coming te the knowl
edge of Constable Ringler, he arrested
Rifer, and a telegram was sent te Lancas
ter authorities asking if they wanted him.
At first our authorities did net recognize
the man en account of his alias, and sent
word that no such man had escaped. It
is new known, however, that he is the
man who escaped, and he has been ledged
in jail, Capt. Sprecher having brought him
te Lancaster early this morning.
Te be Taken te Titusville.
Jacob Marcus, whose arrest has already
been noticed, was surrendered te-day te a
Titusville man and will be taken te that city
te answer a complaint of embezzlement
preferred against him by A. Goldenstein.
Mr. Goldstein came here himself te ex
ecute the warrcnt which was given him by
the Titusville authorities. This afternoon
Marcus was taken before Judges Livingston
and Patterson en a writ of habeas corpus
and his discharge was asked for, en the
ground that Goldstein had no right te ex
ecute the warrant, and further that the
offense alleged was net committed in
Crawford county. The court refused the
discharge and the man will be taken te
Titusville te-night, where he says he will
give bail.
Runaway.
About two o'clock this afternoon as J.
Stcckman and Phil. Mergert were driving
down West Orange street in a no-top wagon
their hore scared at the noise made by a
boy drawing a stick along the palings of
the high school fence, and as both lines
broke as seen as the strain was put en
them the horse could net be managed,
and the two men jumped or were
thrown out, while the animal came
at full speed down the street,
turning into Prince street, where the
wagon upset aud wsis detached. The
horse ran en, but was seen caught unin
jured. Stcckman had his face skinned
and Mergert" s fingers were slightly cut,
but no great harm was done.
Diphtheria.
Themas Baddcrs, residing in a dwelling
of the late Themas Black, deceased, in
Fulton township, has lest three children
by diphtheria within the last ten days;
and Jehn Bair, residing in Drumore town
ship, lest two Harry, aged three years, and
Mary Alice aged one year during the past
week. The public schools at Cedar Hill,
Little Britain, and Fairvicw, Drumore,
have been closed en account of the disease.
Birthday Presentation.
Yesterday being the C7th anniversary of
Dr. Abraham Hitz, the veteran type of the
Nac Era, the boys of the Era office signal
ized the occasion by presenting him with a
very handsome silver tobacco box, of beau
tiful design, lined with geld, and enclosed
in a morocco case. Mr. Hitz also received
from the wife of the Neie Era editor a
large and handsome pound cake.

AMERICAN WATCHES.
The American Watch Company of Waltliam
received last week an order lrem the British
Government ler 372 watches, intended for the
use of conductors, engineers, station masters
and ether empleyes of the state railroads of
India. This is the third large order received
bj- the company from the same source, and
like the former ones, was obtained in public
competition with foreign manufactuers, The
Londen Jetrclcr ami Metal Werhcr, in its issue
of January 15, observes, in reference te this
erde:
"The contract for watches, te be used by the
oflleiulsef the India state railways, has again
been secured by the American Watch com
pany. This is the third time Messrs. Bobbins
& Appleton have received this distinction,
which is net a barren one, for it mnst be evi

ing New Yerk again by the end of the
month.
Parnell at St. Leuis.
St. Leuis, March 4. Mr. Parnell and
his associates arrived at eleven o'clock
this morning and were met at the depot
by Mayer Overstel, and representa
tives of the various organizations.
There were no formal ceremonies in the
depot and the party were quietly driven
te the Lindell house.

Gen. SlellkelFs Would-be-Assassin te Swing
To-Merrow.
St. Petersburg, March 4. The man
who fired upon Gen. Melikoff, yesterday,
as he was alighting from a carriage at his
residence, is a converted Jew named Mo Me
detsky, from Minsk, a town distant 430
miles southwest of Petersburg. He has
been tried and sentenced te-day, and will
be hanged te-morrow. He maintains a
defiant demeanor.
IRISH RELIEF.
France Joining Hands.
Paris, March 4. An Irish relief com
mittee has been formed here and amongst
the contributors is Marshal MacMahen.
The archbishop of Paris has already for
warded fifty thousand francs te Ireland.
Ontario's Contribution.
Terente, March 4. The premier of
Ontario cabled yesterday te the lord mayor
of Du blin te draw at sight en the provincial
treasurer for $20,000.

was granted in the superior court in this
city this morning, restraining the Ameri

The Town of Wlnchetr Threatened with
Destruction.
"Winchester, Ky., March 4. Fer two
hours yesterday morning destruction of this
town by fire was imminent. The fire
originated in Martin's grocery and spread
te adjacent buildings, destroying the
Beene corner, Mrs. Tayler's building and
Thompson's block. Less, $15,000.
DIPLOMATIC CHANGES.
Rumored Transfers in the Italian Service.
Reme, March 4. It is rumored here
that Count Carti, the present Italian am
bassador at Constantinople, will be trans
ferred te Paris and that Baren Blanc, the
Italian minister at "Washington will suc

Chester Fulliner's Cae Taken te the Su
preme Court.
Philadelphia, March 4. In the case of
Chester B. Fullmer, son of Henry Fullmer.
of Easten, Judge Paxson, en application of
counsel for defendant, granted the allecatur
removing the case te the supreme court.
This suspends Judge Green's sentence, and
the young man is set at liberty pending
final decision.

Anticipating the Courts In Illinois.
Peoria, HI., March 4. Jeremiah "Web
ster and Jehn GutlilT, farmers living near
Chillicothe, in this county, have had a dis
pute for several months about the division
line between their respective farms. On
Tuesdey "Webster started te build a fence
en the disputed line and GutlilT shot him
in the head, from the effects of which he
died. Gutliff was arested.

ordered a writ for the arrest of County
Judges Celes, Parrish and ethers for trial

Frank Gudefskl's Crime and Punishment.
"WiLKESBARRE, Pa., JIarch 4. Frank
Gudefski, who pleaded guilty of the mur
der of Jehn Blumm and left decision with
the court, was this morning adjudged
guilty of murder in the second degree and
sentenced te eight years imprisonment.
