A stated meeting of the Linnaean society was held en Saturday, February 28, 1880, President Rev. J. S. Stalir in the chair. After attending te the opening duties the donations te the museum were ex amined, and found te consist of a fine specimen of fish, caught below the dam at Columbia, and sent per Mr. Gee. F. Ratli Ratli ven, aud submitted te J. Stauffer, chair man of the committee en ichthiolegy for a name, which he gave as the Ambleplites rupestris, a fish only known in Lake Erie and the Western waters, and new for the Susquehanna. A specimen of ere. A dark colored large teeth, sent last October by Gee. D. Beggs, Elizabethtown, and by him supposed te te be a fossil teeth. On inspection it has net attained the stage of a fossil, and proves te be the teeth of a horse. A bottle containing one of a number of singular productions, passed by a respec table female of this city, similar te these claimed by Docter Campbell te have been crabs, a year age, by one of his patients. This is intended te be submitted te Dr. Davis for a microscopic inspection, te de tcrmin its character. One bottle, having a singular growth found, en what they call fish-bred, an algae or fungus growth, net inspected both deposited by S. S. Rathven. Several very large, fiattish, cir cular beans, from a pod said te attain four feet in length ; also, thin, Hat double seeds, with fine silky wings, two inches en each side, from some shrub, no doubt similar te the catalpa bean or tree, together with 9 leaves of palm leaf part of a sacred book of the Burmah religion, and a translation ; title, "Justice and Mercy Reconciled ; " donated by Miss Saleme S. Le fevre, who had been a missionary in Bur mah for years. Fer the inspection of the members present she also had en exhibi tion a book in leaves about 3 inches wide and 20 inches long, embossed with raised letters of a shiny black polish en a gilded ground, and a gorgeously colored envelope or cover quite a curiosity, but no one volunteered te read the title eveu. Sculp tured idols, artistically made, together with richly-colored pictures of some -of their gods and goddesses, such as the Krishna and Radhika, or the Menkey Ged ; Kali, the bloody war goddess ; Ganeh, the Elephant Ged ; Mehader, or Lakkhia and Swaraswati, two daughters of Mehadar. These water-color paintings are in the oriental style, rich in color smoothly laid en, but like these of the Chinese or Japanese, net remarkable for perspective skill or truthful outline. A framed bouquet of flowers per Mrs. Zell from specimen collected in Palestine by Miss Lefevre, the " Rese of Sharen " occu pying the centre. Mr. Rathven exhibited a full large flower of the hellebore, called Christmas rose, wondering why this was net mere cultivated, as it yields flowers in succession, from December te April, out of doers, when no ether flowers arc about. Te the historical section, Chas. A. Heinitsh, esq., added a revenue tax receipt from Leenard Eicholtz, dated Feb. 21, 1S10 en saddles, Jas. Humes, collector. S. S. Rathven, four envelopes containing clippings of historical interest. Te the library: Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Science, Philadel phia, Part II., April te October, 1879. The Lancaster Farmer for February. Ne. 1, Scientific Advocate ; editor, A. Green, Atco, N. J. Sunday-school book notices and cat alogues. Papers read : J. Stauffer read an illus trated paper, Ne. 537, en the fish named by him as the Ambleplites Rapestris, and from a copy of it sent te S. S. Baird, sec retary of the Smithsonian society, the name was proneuneed correct and it is con sidered new for the waters of Pennsylva nia, and of interest, Prof. Baird desiring the lean of the specimen te compare it with these they have from the Western waters. S. S, Rathven read a miscellane ous record of articles deposited and whence taken. New business : Miss Saleme S. Lefevre was proposed and unanimously elected a corresponding member of this society, and en motion a vote of cordial thanks was given her for the pleasure afforded by the display of Indian curiosities and her expla nation, as well as for the desirable speci mens donated te the society. The president, Rev. J. S. Stahr, asked if the society could net publish a small monthly sheet of its proceedings ? A mo tion was then made that a committee of three be appointed te ascertain the cost and expediency se te de and exchange with ether societies. The motion was agreed te, when Mr. Stauffer nominated Rev. J. S. Stahr, S. S. Rathven and Rev. Dr. J. H. Dubbs as that committee, and they were agreed te. Mr. Rathven rcjort rcjert ed a bill for alcohol : ordered te be raid. The treasurer was authorized te subscribe for the Science Advocate for one year. Under scientific miscellany the religion aud products of Burmah was discussed, or rather commented upon, and after spend ing a few hours in a highly interesting and profitable manner the society adjourned.
