TUESDAY EVENING, MAECH 2, 1880.
Uems of Thought.
Set by the Press Paragraphers.
Mr. Geat, of Stephcnville, Tenn., was
recently married te Miss Nannie "Williams,
thereby converting his bride into a sweet
little Nannie Geat, by the mere alteration
of names.
Shakspcare makes Cassius say, "The
clock has stricken three," forgetful of the
fact that clocks were net invented for mere
than eight hundred years after Cassius
was dead.
The peer illiterate fellow could hardly
have made a better combination of blun
ders than when he said, meaning that he
had get a Polyglot Bible with the Apocra Apecra
pha in it, that he had just bought a Polly Pelly Polly
weg Bible with Hypecrysy in it.
It is said that Mary Andersen, while
acting Juliet in Bosten, took a wad of
chewing gum out of her mouth in the gar
den scene, put it carefully en the railing of
the balcony, and picked it up again after
her last "geed night" te Remee.
The German comic papers have a picture
of a youth astride a horse which the
father is anxious te dispose of te a cus
tomer who stands by, and the boy, who is
in ignorance of the nature of the bargain,
leans from the saddle and whispers te his
parent, " Father, shall I ride him te buy
or te sell?"
Persons who arc constantly saying that
they are free from prejudice are generally
mere prejudiced than ethers, though they
are net aware of the fact. They are like
the old lady who declared that she was
open te conviction, but, shaking her head,
she added that she would just like te sec
the man who could convince her.
Lcssing, recognizing the unspeakable
happiness of the man who seeks for truth,
and who, once in a while, finds a glisten
ing particle, said : "If Ged held in his
right hand all truth and iu His left hand
the eternal striving after it, and should say
tome, 'Cheese,' I would take what he
had in His left hand, and say te Him,
' Father, give me this ; pure truth is only
for Thee."
A temperance orator was interrupted by
a young man in his audience with a cor
rection. The latter said certain facts were
within his knowledge with reference te the
sale of liquor. The temperance orator, a
man of dignity, said, in answer, that he
knew nothing of such infractions of the
law. The young man rose and replied :
" I beg leave te observe that my knowl
edge, however limited, is net te be offset
by the gentleman's ignorance, however
extensive."
The celebrated Marshal Narvacz would
appear te have been a man who understood
his country and his time. On his death
bed his confessor asked him if he freely
forgave all his enemies. " I have no ene
mies," replied the dying marshal, proudly.
" Everyone must have made enemies in
the course of his life," suggested the
priest, mildly. " Oh, of course," replied
the marshal, " I have had a great number
of enemies in my time, but I have none
new. Ihaie had them all 87101."
The great Napeleon, with trembling
Europe at his feet, was net high enough
te be above being annoyed by two women,
De Stael and Itecamier. He never liked
the former, and she never forgave him for
his indifference te her fascinations. The
favor of the latter he had courted in vain,
and that was sufficient reason, even though
she had net been the friend of Necker's
brilliant daughter, for visiting her with
his displeasure. Said Madame De Stael,
bitterly : " The coalition of two women
en the banks of Lake Geneva, frightened
the master of the world."
Every young man about te enter politi
cal life, says Mr. T. "W. Higginson, should
abandon the patronizing feeling the feel
ing that he confers a favor en the commu
nity by participating iu its affairs. Splen
did careers arc brought te an untimely
close simply en account of a patronizing
way assumed toward inferiors. Ne man
can accomplish much through the press, or
by direct contact with the world until he
has get the nonsense in him thoroughly
knocked out, and has learned that he must
have faith in his fellow men, a hearty re
spect for the average geed sense and
ability of the American people.
The" first trip in the United States en an
English tricycle was made en Sunday by a
member of the New Yerk bicycle club. It
is a singular machine, and is mainly in
tended for ladies and timid men who dread
the bicycle. The seat is square, bread,
and can be raised or lowered at will. In
the rear is the large driving wheel, about
fifty inches inches in diameter. This, by a
system of double levers, has its cranks
connected with two treadles below and in
fient of the seat. Te the right and left of
the treadles arc steering wheels two feet in
diameter, and managed by a bar with han
dles rising from their hubs. The back
bone, en which the seat rests, connects all
the wheels. In Fifth avenue an immense
crowd surrounded the tricycle.

Seven Wildcats in a Tree.
Near Jonesville, N. Y., for several
months last summer considerable less was
sustained in lambs and poultry. At last
the robbers have been found. The Rev.
u . ... ...r;Y" "",
ier a granu coeii limit wiui uugs uuu guns.
The dogs started a trail that led them into
the big timber, and in about the centre the
hounds all brought up te a long hollow
tree. It being near dark the party voted
te stay all night. Se building up a reusing
fire and sending for some refreshments,
they were off the tough hours of the night
by playing dominoes en an old leg. As
seen as they could see the tree was felled,
and, te their astonishment, seven wildcats,
two being full grown and five about one-
half size, sprang from the tree. A grand
fight ensued with dogs, guns and clubs,
and ended by killing all but one of the
cats, which was secured alive. The men
carried their game home in great triumph.
The "TalT Docter."
New Yerk Correspondence Hartferd Times.
"The Tall Docter " is dead and buried.
The last time I saw him en the Bowery,
which was his usual haunt, he looked quite
feeble, se the announcement of his death a
few days age was net a surprise. Every
body has seen the chrome called " Stealing
a Smoke." A tall, neatly dressed man is
represented gazing into the window of
a iewelry store. He is leaning forward,
with his hands behind him, and between
the fingers of one hand is a lighted cigar,
which he has been smoking. A bootblack
has crept up unnoticed and is puffing away
at thecigar, while the holder, unconscious of
the attack in the rear, keeps en looking at
some object in the window. The picture
was get up by a Bowery jeweler as an adver
tisement and has gene all ever the country.
The man whose cigar the bootblack is sur
reptitiously smoking is the Tall Docter. He
was a sort of pensioner in a small way of
the jeweler, and he willingly sat (or rather
steed) for the picture. His name was Dr.
Themas F. Backus and he had been known
along the Bowery a great many years.
Half a century age he was the swell beau
of the period. Cultured and courteous,
with a handsome face and a slender,
graceful figure, which he was careful
te adorn with the neatest and newest
fashions, Dr. Backus figured and was
a favorite in the fashionable circles of Go Ge
tham. Ne ball nor party of any note was al
lowed te pass without his presence and his
face was as familiar in social circles as that
of the Count Joannes became te the gener
al public a long time after. But the doctor
like the count lacked a balance-wheel in
his head. He had a mania for dress and
jewelry, and a decided disinclination te
work. Up te the last day of his appearance
en the streets he were a dress coat, and,
like the count, he invariably were gloves
when out of doers. I have seen the old
man (he died in '77) in the street en a cold
wintry day, with a thin dress-coat ("claw
hammer," of course) and equally thin and
well-worn trewsers, as the only outward
covering of his spare body, and the same
shabby gloves which he were in summer.
He always carried an eye-glass attached te
a black cord, and he might have been seen
almost any day, with the glass te his eye,
looking into the windows of Bowery pawn
shops and jewelry stores, where articles of
the kind for which he had an uncontrelable
mauia were displayed.
He died in the New Yerk hospital,
whither he was removed a few days before
from a miserable Mett street basement,
which had been his lodging place for some
time, He started in life as a doctor, with
fair prospects, but he made no progress.
His mind was given entirely te dress and
social pleasures, and he paid no attention
te patients. He had friends and some
money, and for a number of years he man
aged without much trouble te make both
ends meet. But the friends gradually
passed away, the money all disappeared,
and in the certain course of time he found
himself a lonely old man, with empty
pockets and no home, and a shabby dress
coat, a pair of thread-bare gloves and a
cheap eye-glass as his only possession. He
then fell into the habit of frequenting
the jewelry stores and pawnbroker's
shops along the Bowery, gazing into the
windows by the hour, and often going in
side and examining the things in the
show cases. His politeness and the gen
eral courtesy of his manner made se pleas
ing an impression that he seen became a
favorite, and was net only tolerated, but
welcomed. After spending a day in this
way, perhaps with only a single slight
meal te sustain him, he would retire in
the evening te his miserable lodging and
remain out of sight till the hour came
next day for another visit te the Bowery.
A few store keepers there made it a rule te
give him a trifle of money a dime or a
quarter, may be every time he called,
and these little gratuities were his
only means of support. His best friend
was the jeweler who get up the " Stealing
a Smoke" picture, and from whom he re
ceived a small amount every day. At last
the old man became tee feeble te get out
any mere and then an order was given for
his removal te the hospital, where he seen
died. His family connections have never
been known. It has been said that he was
closely related te an ex-governor of Vir
ginia, but no one knows even new where
he was born, or the circumstances of his
life before he entered New Yerk society
as a prince "of beaux fifty years or mere
age.
The "Atlantic" Editor.
A Glance at the Man and Glimpse of His
Happy Heme Relations.
A newspaper scribe has been visiting
"William D. Howells, at his home near
Bosten, and "cannot refrain" from giv
ing his impressions of the editor of the
Atlantic te the public. The delightful
author is very accessible ; he never as
sumes a lefty demeanor nor treats young
writers either with superciliousness or
patronage. He is, en the contrary, very
simple, straightforward, and cordial in
manner, but still shrewd and careful in
all business matters. In person he is
small, rather stout, steeping a little ; his
complexion is dark, his eye bright, his
smile kindly, his brown hair parted in the
middle, his moustache heavy and just
tinged with gray. He has something of
an Italian leek, though he would
be known for an American anywhere.
He has three children, ahoy and two girls,
the elder of these, fourteen or fifteen, hav
ing already made her debut in verse in
a juvenile magazine. They usually run
in and out of his study while he is at
work, and are as fend of him as he is of
them. His conversation is as facile,
bright, and graceful as his style, and, like
that, abounds in delicate humor and
gentle cynicism. He avoids serious sub
jects, and cannot be betrayed into argu
ment, but illustrates whatever he touches
with a picturesque lightness. He is ac
counted charming in company, but, unlike
what might be expected of a describer of
contemporaneous life and manners, he
gees little into society. His wife, very
amiable and pleasant, a sister of Larkin G.
Meade, the sculptor, he met first in Italy.
Howells is a native of Martin's Ferry,
Ohie, his father being "Welsh and his
mother a Pennsylvania German. Origin
ally a printer he became a journalist he
edited the Ohie State Journal once and
then a pure literatteur. He is a master of
style, and is in his forty-third year.
Blaine's Yery Comical Story.
During the recent row in Maine a New
Yerk reporter, who was in Augusta,
asked Blaine what he thought of Hayes.
"That reminds me of a little story," said
the Senater, " A party went up te Moose Moese Meese
head Lake te camp out. The agreement
was that one man should de the cooking
till some one complained, and then the man
who grumbled should try his hand at it.
The cooking was frightful, but net one of
the party with the penalty hanging
in terror em ever their heads dared say a
word. Finally, things came te such a pass
that each man tried te inveigle his neigh
bor into freeing his mind. One day one of
the party saw his friend writhing in silent
agony ever a piece of alleged pie.
' ' "What de you think of that pie, any
how ?' he asked.
" ' It is the dash dashedest pie I ever
wrestled with in my life but,' catching
the gleam in the ether fellow's eye, 'I
like it eh, yes, I like it.' "
A Bavarian Custom.
A Prince en Sentry Duty.
In Bavaria a quaint custom obtains, ren
dering it obligatory upon every prince of
the reigning house te perform at least one
day's active duty as a private soldier in
the royal army. On the 24th of last month
Prince Alphense, of Bavaria, first cousin
te the musical king, completed his eigh
teenth year and attained his majority.
Greatly te the entertainment of the Mun
ich public, which crowded the Marienplatz
te contemplate his performance, he cele
brated his birthday by doing duty as sen
try Jn front of the principal guard house of
tne capital. Although lie had received
his lieutenant's commission in the morn
ing, he took up his pest as a simple senti
nel, duly great-coated and armed with
sword bayonet and rifle, which latter he
shouldered at the correct angle as he
marched te and fro en his beat, or steed
" at ease " before his sentry-box, giving
the prescribed salutes in all their subtle
nuances te every officer that passed by.
Being an uncomenly geed-looking youth,
he was gazed at with admiration and ap
proval during his "spell" en guard by
great numbers of Munich dames and dam
sels, who gave utterance te their feelings
by plaudits when he was relieved from his
pest in the usual manner, and marched off
te barracks, rifle en shoulder, with the re
lief party.
