It is a noticeable fact that the agricul tural colleges throughout the republic, with very few exceptions, have failed in carrying out the purposes of their creation. The idea of Congress in voting among the states proportionate shares of the public lauds te establish institutions for agricul tural education, mainly, has met the pub lic sentiment ; and the Legislatures of many of the states carried out the idea mere or less in accordance with the original design. But it was seen discovered that the agricultural interests had net reached a point sufficiently advanced te sustain with the necessary patronage the capacious and comprehen sive institutions which the states con sidered indispensable in carrying out the supposed purposes of Congress ; and the result has generally been that the agricul tural colleges teach as little as possible a knowledge of practical Jagriculturc, while education for the several professions has almost exclusively absorbed the duties of the instructors. In referring te these institutions in the .several New England states, a leading JJosten paper Holds tms language : xi these institutions arc doing anything te benefit agriculture in New England, if there was any evidence that the young men graduated at these institutions be came practical farmers, or did anything te encourage or improve farming in New England, there could be no objection te annual legislative grants te keep in a Nourishing condition. We have first and last seen several lists of the graduates of these colleges with their residences and employments after being educated at an agricultural college. Frem such lists we have found that while many graduates became lawyers, physicians and teachers, very few become farmers in their own states. We have net the statis tics at hand, but we beleive that it may be safely asserted that net one in ten of the young men educated in and graduated "from our agricultural colleges arc engaged te-day in agricultural pursuits in the States by whose aid they received their education." This statement docs net differ from our own se-called agricultural celicge. It tin ns out very few farmers, net mere than pei haps one in tenor fifteen of the pu pils ; but educates, mainly at the expense of the state, the bulk of its students for lawyers, doctors, ministers, &c. Even the ornamental forms of the regular colleges, se unbecoming in a sciioei 01 young iaini ers, have been introduced, increasing the expense and giving the students flashy con ceptions of their position altogether foreign te the character of such an institution. Wc have our doubts of the propriety of the Legislature granting any mere aid te ours in Centre county. It ought te be self-sustaining with its present income, if we are rightly-informed as te the extent of it and te the labors which its present list of students required from instructors. LADIES!
