Grant has sailed for Vera Cruz. He will
net teucty Santa Cruz.
It cannot be expcctecl that a decision of
the United States supreme ceurtcanbe ob
tained in a minute. When a case gees up
there it gees te "Wake.
Says the New Orleans Picayune :
"Never kick a man when he is down
down in the parish prison however
much he may deserve kicking." Says the
Oil City Derrick : "Never kick a man.when
he is down he may get up and lick you
like thunder."
An illustration of the diverse ways in
which different people leek at the same
thing was supplied by two persons who
stoeU gazing admiringly at a restaurant
'cartoon of a mule drawing an oyster shell
of about the same size with himself. One
of the men exclaimed "Oh, what a big
oyster shell !" while the ether remarked,
" Oli ! what a little mule !"
A Zulu youth can net marry a girl until
he has whipped all her brothers and given
her father a fall, if demanded, in addition.
This makes a courtship mere exciting than
chocolate caremcls and gum drops ; but
the Zulu maiden who has four brothers
wei"hing ISO pounds each, and measuring
30 inches around the waist, generally dies
an old maid, while the girl whose brothers
are weak and sickly, and whose father is
sleeping beneath the daisies, is overrun
with proposals. It is a queer custom,
and if it was in vogue in this country a
irl vine is an only c'lild and a half orphan
en her father's side would be at a prem
ium. There weie two men in a Mississippi
ic'imcut, commanded by Cel. Stith, of
Baltimore. Ore of these men contended
that the scriptures wc.c of Divine origin,
and the ether said they were of human
invention, and asked his opponent, in one
of the arguments in which they were con
tinually having, if he believed the story ei
Jenah and the whale ; te which the othc ethc
rcplied, "Yes." "De you also believe
that the three Hebrews passed through
the liery furnace without feeling the
heat?" persisted the infidel. "Yes."
came the answer again. "De you be
lieve, " came shortly, "that Samson slew
all these thousands of Philistines with the
lawbene of an ass?" It was just after the
'battle of Shiloh, and the believer in the in
spiration of the Bible had just had some
tough experience in the difficulty of fight
ing e-ily lour or live te one. " Well, " he
answered hesitatingly, te the last home
thrust. " 1 I always regarded that story
a mere camp rumor.
