LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER. FRIDAiY. FEBRUARY: 20, 1880.
lncastet intelligencer.
FRIDAY EVENING, FEB. 20, 1880.
CeuHtry Bead Making.
The transportation question is one of
greatest importance te American farmers.
It is probable, however, tliat the phase of
this subject tliat has been least discussert
by public journals the making and mend
ing of country reads is quite as important
and less understood than any ether. A
large proportion of American farm products
never reach the railroads. They arc
consumed en the farm or in the
villages and cities whither the farm
er's team and -wagon convey them.
Most of these farmers live se far
from market that one full day at least is
consumed in marketing a lead of prednce.
If the reads arc uniformly geed and level
a team will draw two tens of grain mere
easily than en ordinary reads they will
draw half that amount. This may seem
te some tee great a difference, but it is be
cause we have tee few really geed reads.
Toe little attention is paid te grading. In
a long stretch of level reads, a slight hill
may compel every teamster te put en much
less than lie should dc auie 10 ue. in hucu
case it would be better te grade the hill, if
that be possible, or go around it. The
measure of value of a read is what a team
can draw ever the hardest part of it.
There is a decided increase in the selling
value of farms which always have a geed
and level read te market. I de net believe
the importance of having geed reads is
appreciated as it should and will be, but
there is already an understanding en this
subject which makes intelligent read im
provement profitable. As a rule,
most of the work annually put upon
country highways is wasted. Conscious Censcious Conscieus
nesss of this fact is one reason
why such work is generally shirked
sus far as possible. Most men will net
work at their read tax as they, de en their
farms for themselves. If they could knew
that their work en the read was as direct
ly for their own benelit as that which they
de in every day farm work, this would net
be se. Te have men engage earnestly in
read making, it must be shown that their
tabors mm nrntlncintr Poed results. As it is
new, very often the harder men work the
worse will be the reads.
The severe winters anil superabundant
rains and snows of our northern climate,
make the keeping of reads in repair ex
tremely difficult. "We have hardly begun
te appreciate the importance of under
draining te keep reads in geed order. It
is, en all heavy soils, the first thing te be
done. In neighborhoods where farmers
undcrdmin their land, the reads arc much
better than where they de net. Very often
the drain cresses the read, and always at
a point where it will be of most advantage.
With an umlerdrain three feet deep cross
ing a read, and usually in a depression, it
should be easy te keep a long stretch of
read always dry. This is the place te put
in a piece of macadam turnpike two or
three layers of stone lightly covered with
earth and gravel. The macadam turn
pike is really a thoroughly drained road
bed when it is jicrfecr. The reason why
it se often fails is because in many places
there is no outlet te the drain. The water
runs under the read te some depression,
and there lies until winter frosts have
lifted the stones from their foundation and
left the read a quagmire as seen as the
spring came. If the macadam read-bed is
connected with an underdrain it will obvi
ate this trublc and make a linn and per
manent read-bed.
Piling loose earth and sods in the centre
of the read may be somewhat better than
leaving the surface level. I5uf if the soil
is vegetable matter, sods and the like, the
mere it is piled up, the worse the read-bed
will surely be. Nothing will de any geed
except te first remove surplus water by
stone or tile underdraius. When this is
done, it is surprising hew little stone or
gravel is needed. I am glad that road read
makers arc learning te use mere gravel ;
but in thousands of places drawing gravel
te threw en an undrained turnpike is nearly
a waste of labor. W. J. F. in Country Gen
tleman. A Cress ltaby.
