has claims te he considered the founder

equivalence of forces which is the basis of
modern physical philosophy. It is rather
remarkable that M. dc Hcnuisat speaks of
this eminent man as Mr. Kuniferd. In
fact he wak net Mr. Itumferd, but Count
Itiiinfeiil. His name was Bcniamin Thomp
son. He was net a German savant. He was a
native of Salem, Mass., and, therefore, an
Ameiican. His title was conferred en him
iu recognition of his distinguished services
te the government of Uararia. Fer these
services he was raised successively te the
rank of major general in the army, mem
ber of the council of state, lieutenant gen
eral, commander-in-chief of the general
staff, minister of war, and count of the
holy Human empiie. His title was taken
from the name of the town in New Hamp
shire (new Concord) where he lived dur
ing his early life. At a later period of
his life he was head of the council of
regency of Bavaria, in the absence
r tiu lneter. Te sneak of such a
man as if he wcic a mere commer
cial traveler, with a smattering of
science, seems little less than ahsuid.
Te show the versatility, the energy and the
intelligence of the man, a very brief sum
mary of a few of his many achievements
will suilice. He reorganized the entire
military establishment of Bavaria, and in
troduced a simpler cede of tactics, and a
system of elder, economy and discipline,
lie successfully suppressed beggary
thiougheut the country at that time a
very laborious enterprise. He established
a military school ; improved the breed of
horses, and cenvcitccl an old hunting
ground near Munich into a magnificent
park, where the inhabitants erected the
statue in his honor which new stands with
in the grounds. He cured the great evil
of smoky chimneys in England and
established the leading principles en
which fire-places and grates for coal
are still constructed. He made great im
provements in artillery, and made many
important discoveries in the science of
heat and litrht. It was while supciintend-
ing the boring of a cannon at Munich that
he made the famous experiment by which
he demonstrated the mechanical relation
existing between beat and force, or ar
rested motion, which is the basis of all
modern investigation of the subject, and
en which is founded, as we have said, the
law of persistence of feice, as it is called
by Herbert Spencer, and from which is
built up the grand doctrine of develop
ment and evolution. It was reserved
ler Mayer, the profound philosopher of
llelibrunn, te demonstrate mathematically
and te express quantitatively the law of
the michanical equivalent of heat, and for
Joule, of Manchester, te prove it cxpeii
incntallv : but the doctrine was lirt sug
gested by Thompson's line experiment.
Finally, in ail'cctienate remembrance of his
own country, from which the jealousy of
envious rivals baa forced him te flee dur
ing the war of the Revolution, he instituted
a prize for discoveries in light and heat, te
be awarded by the American academy of
sciences, and he bequeathed te Harvard
University the funds with which was
founded its professorship of the application
of science te the art of living.
