MOKE ABOUT TIIK ELECTRIC I.IUUT.
A Lancaster Company Incorporated.
Since our notice yesterday relative te the
application of certain parties for charters
of incorporation of companies for supply
ing "light and heat ether than gas," in
various parts of the state, we learn that a
charter has been granted te the'Lancaster
City Light and Heat company" of which J.
Hay ISrewn, esq., is solicitor, and that
the company .will organize en Saturday
next. The following named gentlemen
are the incorporators, and will form the
lirst beard of directors : It. "W. Shenk, presi
dent ; Thes. 15. Cochran, secretary ; J. Hay
Brown, treasurer and solicitor, Jehn A.
Hicstand, II. C. Demuth.
In case Edisen's electric light or some
thing of similar character proves a success
this company will have the exclusive right
of using it in this city, and there is no
telling hew valuable the charter may be.
The proposed company for which B. F.
Kshleman, esq., is solicitor, and which is
t be known as the "Lancaster Light and
Heat company, has net yet been chartered.
Although its application for a charter was
advertised a week earlier than the ap
plication of Mr. Brown's company, the lat
ter was first filed with the authorities at
Harrrisburg. It is net likely, however,
that the two companies will conflict with
each ether, as that represented by Mr.
Eshleman will be confined in its operations
within the limits of the county, exclusive
of the city.
The Philadelphia Ledger of te-day, re.
fcrring te the numerous applications for
such charter-. in different parts of the state,
says :
If electric light companies should ob
tain charters under the corporation act of
1S7-1 meielyas a matter of speculation, we
may have the old disgraceful business set
up of the hawking about of charters for
sale te the highest bidder. Under
the previsions of that aet the charters
of companies formed te supply water,
gas, light or hsat te the pub
lic confer exclusive franchises and privi
leges, and no ether company can be incor
porated for a similar purpose in the same
district until the first corporation has real
ized and divided among its stockholders,
dining five 3 cars, a dividend equal te eight
per centum per annum upon its capital
stock. Tliis latter prevision, although nomi
nally protecting the public from the extor
tion of a monopoly, would probably, in
practice, be found te be of little value.
Tlic powers granted te corporations te furn
ish water, light or heat, make them prac
tically independent of the local authorities.
They aie given the right '" te enter upon
any public street, lane, alley and highway
for the purpose of laying down pipes, al
tering, inspecting and repairing the eame,
doing as little damage te said streets,
lanes, alleys and highways, and
impairing the free use thereof, as little
as possible," and they arc only subject te
such regulations as councils may pass in
regard te grades or for the protection and
convenience 01 public travel. The cost of
getting the exclusive privilege for lighting
a city like Philadelphia by electricity, if it
can be obtained under the act of 1874,
would be insignificant compared with the
prospective or rather possible value of the
barter.

ACCIDENT.

Instantly
Killed
the
Railroad.
Brakeman Jehn S. Lundy, of engine Seil
of the Pennsylvania railroad, fell from his
train while rounding a curve between Glen
Lech and Dowuingtewii, yesterday after
noon, about ' o'clock, lie was sitting en
the end of one of the cars, when, losing
his balance, he fell between two of the
cars, alighting en the track, and was run
ever by about eight cars. His
body was completely dissevered, horribly
mangled, and portions of his remains were
scattered for some distance along the
track. Seme of the ether train men were
made aware of the accident by seeing the
cars jolting ever the unfortunate man's
body. The train was stepped, some of the
employees went back, gathered up Mr.
Lundy's remains, and the Chester county
coroner held an inquest and rendered a
verdict in accordance with the facts. His
body was cellined and taken te his home
in Columbia, whence they will likely be
taken for interment te Quarryville, where
his own and his wife's family formerly re
sided. Deceased was about '.' years of age
and was a son of the late Eli Lundy, of
Quarryville, his mother, Mrs. Orpah
Lundy, residing there ; one brother,
Themas Lundy, a tailor, at New Helland,
and several sisters survive him. His widow
is the daughter of Michael Phillips, sr., and
sister of Michael II. Phillips, of this city.
He leaves also one child. He formerly lived
en West Leamen street, this city, and was
well known here, being a member of the
Friendship fire company, an experienced
railroader, regarded as an industrious,
sober, careful and efficient man. Just be
fore the accident he had received a month's
pay from the company.
Sudden Death.
Artist AVilhclm Zeibich, an old German,
for many years past estler at "Wagner's
hotel, Columbia, died suddenly about 3
o'clock this morning. He was known te
everybody in Columbia by the name of
" Bismarck." He was an industrious and
frugal man and had saved considerable
money, most of which he had safely in
vested. At one time he was in the employ
of Mr. B. B. Martin of this city. Henry
Xelte of Columbia this morning took out
letteis of ailnrinst ration of his estate. It
is said he has 110 relatives in this country.
Appeals.
Te-day appeals from the triennial
assessments of property in the boroughs of
Adamstown, Marietta and Washington
were heard by the county commissioners.
There were very few objections te the
assessments in either Marietta or Wash
ington and none in Adamstown. Xe ap
peals will be heard te-morrow. Monday
will be devoted te hearing appeals from
Columbia borough.
Sheriffs Sale.
At the court house this afternoon at 2
o'clock Sheriff Strine sold at public sale
the right, title and interest of Herace B B
Jehns in a tract of land in Upper Leacock
township, en which is erected a two-story
brick mansion house and ether improve
ments. The property was purchased by
W. W. Brown, esq., for $2,200.

Iu the will case of Franklin Schlcgelmil
ich vs. Mary Eckert. the jury rendered a
verdict in favor of the plaintiff.
The Open Way te Greatness.
President Buchanau was bera at "Steny
Batter," in Cetc Gap of the Tuscarora
Mountain, about four miles from Mcrcers-
barg, Franklin county, Pa. His father
located there m the mountain wilderness
when it was en the line of the " pack-
mules," which were the only means of
transportation between the Cumberland
Valley and the West. His birth-place
has long been marked only by a stone
heap, but Mr Jacob McCune purchased
the house some sixty years age, re
moved the legs te Mercersburg, and re
erccted the building, where it yet standfj
having been carefully preserved by Rev. R.
Lewis 3IcCune, the present owner. Mr.
3IcCune has recently added te the old leg
house in which President Buchanan was
bem, another leg building once used for
an academy, in which Mr. Buchanan com
menced his classical studies, and the two
venerable mementoes of the only Pennsyl
vania president stand side by side en Fay
ette street, Mercersburg. They tell the
story of the obscure birth of one of the
jreatest of our modern statesmen, and
record the open way te greatness that free
institutions proffer te intellect and well
directed effort.
Life In a Progressive City.

On Tuesday next our city election will
take place. Our present mayor (MacGoni (MacGeni
gle) is a candidate for re-election, and we
must certainly say that no better man has
filled the important office since the time
that the late Geerge Sanderson was the in
cumbent. The two great parties are nearly
equally balanced and Mayer MacGenigle
though a Democrat, will obtain many
votes from such Republicans who leek
mere te the man than te party.
The Examiner and the New Era are again
at loggerheads en political questions that in
reality amount te very little. The former
paper wants Mr. Warfel te give its editor
" the sack " forthwith, Jit which Mr. Gcist
gets his "back up" and calls the Exami
ner " Mr. Cameren's cditerlcss Lancaster
organ." The general reader leeks en and
smiles, and some elderly ladies entertain
fears-that a duel will be fought some fine
morning between Mr. Hiestand and Mr.
Geist, and wonder which of the two gen
tlemen will be se unfortunate as te " come
off second best." Such is life in this
progressive city.

The next concert te which the people of Xew
Helland are te be treated will be given by the
Worker's Association of the Reformed church.

Fanny Davenport. Floyd Laumun, who is
ahead of Fanny Davenport, was in town te-day
making arrangements for the appearance el
hat lady here 011 February 19, in the great play
of " Pique."
Teny Denier Te-night. Teny Denier' large
company arrived iu town this morning from
I'ettsville, where they played last night te n
big house. The performance gave great sat
isfaction, as it always docs. The old favorites
w ill appear this evening in the pantomime of
'Humpty Dmnpty," with Geerge H.Adams
(Grimaldi) as clown ; K. C. Dunbar, the Mila
nese minstrel; the Davenport Brethers, acre
bats ; Geerge W. Hunter, Irish comedian, and
a score et old favorites will amuse the audi
ence. The line band of the troupe gave a street
parade this morning, and the features of it
were the donkey and the monkey. The latter
Is owned by F. D. Hildreth, the treasurer of
the show, who get it in the Seuth. It is a
frisky-looking animal, and it delighted crowds
of small boys.

Washington, Feb. 13. Fer the Middle
states threatening weather and rain, fol
lowed by falling temperature and snow,
in the northern portions, falling barometer
and variable winds, during the day, fol
lowed during the night by colder, clearing
weather.
BLOWING GREAT GUNS.
A Southern Tornado en its Travels.
Cincinnati, Feb. 13. A dispatch from
Nashville, Tenn., says : A tornado
struck the city at 11 o'clock last night ac.
cempanicd by heavy rain. Great damage
was done in different parts of the city and
several casualties arc reported. The reefs
of Rhea's elevator,Burns's block and Edge
field manufacturing company were blown
away. A brick wall of the new custom
house fell with a crash from the third story
te the cellar. The Merchants' Exchange
will be badly damaged. Ne less than fif
teen dwellings and twenty business houses
were partially destroyed.
At 11:10 the wind -was blowing forty
miles an hour. Men were blown down in
the street. A man en a trestle bridge was
blown from it and broke a lg. All trains
were forced te lay up en account of trees
and rails being blown across the track.
Ne estimate of the less is made. Kliea
& Sens are the heaviest Iqgers. The un un un
reofing of their elevator exposed 20,000
bushels of wheat te the Heed of rain.

The speaker announced the special order
for te-day was the bill for the relief of
Fitz Jehn Perter, but the Heuse refused
te consider it and went into committee en
the private calendar.

grain for the Irish sufferers. It was sug
gested that a vessel be sent from this pert
with the previsions collected.
THE GREEK FRONTIER.
France Demands the Settlement by a Special
Commission.
Constantinople, Feb. 13. France has
asked England te bring forward the new
proposal for the settlement of the Greek
frontier question by a special commission.
It is believed in diplomatic circles here
that after the commission has concluded
its labors en the spot the results Jwill be
submitted te a conference of the ambassa
dors at Constantinople, who will then
mediate between Turkey and Greece, for
the purpose of securing their acceptance of
the proposed delineation.!
MILT CARTER'S METHOD.

Carter came out of a store yesterday
en the public square he was met
by Hal Ilalceinb, who knocked him
down. Carter rose and Holcomb was in
the act of striking him again, when Carter
shot Holcomb, killing him instantly.
Carter wished te marry the widowed
daughter of deceased, who had forbidden
the match.

mittee en privileges and elections te-day
took up the briefs which have been filed
in the Ingalls case, and after some general
discussion of the subject agreed te vote

A Missing Man Discovered te Have IScen
Murdered.
Wilmington, Del., Feb. 13. Michael
Cenncll' has been missing from this city
since Christinas. His body was found
this morning in the Christiana river, bear
ing marks of violence. It is believed that
he was murdered, but no arrests have been
made.

N. S. Prentice Suspends Stock Operations.
New Yerk, Feb. 13. N. S. Prentice
announced his suspension te the stock ex
