(feed Bad8, Again.
This subject lias received considerable
attention from us, for the reason that it is
a very important one, in which the whole
community is mere or less interested.
Every person who owns a horse or rides in
a vehicle of any kind knows the vast dif
ference between a geed read, and a bad
one a safe read and a dangerous one.
Many reads are never properly repaired
and of course arc never in geed elder.
Sometimes a quagmire or a moist,
miry place is left, year in and year out,
without an attempt te remedy it
permanently, and the little pottering done
only makes the evil worse than it was
before. Ne read, net even a macadamized
one, will continue in geed condition for
any length of time, unless it has sufficient
ly large gutters at the sides, kept clear of
obstructions until the water passes from
the read. Toward these gutters the read
should incline gently from the centre, re
moving everything that may prevent the
water from running directly into them.and
net force it by little embankments along
the edge of the gutters made by the dirt
thrown out of the gutters along the read
sometimes for fifty or a hundred yards be
fore finding its way into the gutter, thus
washing deep lines in the read-bed and
hciieusly damaging it. Heles in the roa'd rea'd
beds are the worst drawbacks upon travel.
They gather the water, and from a very
small depression, become larger and larger
until they arc a decided nuisance. Many
of the superintendents or managers of mac
adamized reads, it seems, are beyond
recognizing this simple fact ; indeed, they
de net seem te be chosen because they un
derstand hew the repairing should be done
but rather because they knew net hew te
de it.
Dirt reads, such as come under the
charge of township supervisors, require
the same method and care in keeping
them in geed condition. But en many of
these highways the reail-scrapcr can be ns-cil
with great efficiency and economy. At
least two of these should be owned by
every township. In New England these
scrapers arc much used. The inventor of
one of them offers, te use his own words,
"te take the reads in ene hundred town
ships and keep them in geed repair for one
year for one-half the former east ; or for
ten years for one-fourth the former eext,
with the exception of bridges and culverts,
and providing the reads arc free of stones. '
He adds, " With my machine one man and
two horses will smooth-up and put in geed
condition ten mile of read a day.
We bring the subject before township
supervisors new that they may have full
time te consider it and make the necessary
prevision for tlic coining season's opera
tions. The time has arrived when the sight
of a bad read should be the exception, net
the rule as it is new. Property owners in
every rural district will find out that in
no way can money be mere certainly saved
than in paying it in the shape of taxes te
keep the reads in the best of order. Ucr Ucr
